Viz Licenses Original Sailor Moon Anime Franchise
North American anime distributor Viz Media announced after its Anime Central panel on Friday that it licensed the original Sailor Moon magical girl anime franchise. The streaming, digital, and home video licenses include all 200 episodes from the five television series, the three feature films, and the assorted tie-in specials. This will include the first North American release of the final television series, Sailor Moon Sailor Stars.

Viz is offering the franchise without edits in its original uncropped 4:3 aspect ratio, with the original Japanese names, story elements, and relationships. It is also producing an uncut English dub with a new voice cast.

Viz aims to release the franchise digitally with English subtitles starting this summer, followed by the English dub starting in late 2014. It also plans DVD and Blu-ray/DVD combo releases in half-season sets starting this fall.

The first four television anime episodes will stream with English subtitles on Viz Media's NeonAlley.com service and the Hulu Plus service on Monday. Two more episodes will then debut every Monday.

Also, here's an interview with Viz about the license.

tbh, this is amazing... It's been what seems like forever since the ADV uncut DVD sets. I'm a little worried about a new dub though =_=

old dub gone? fuck that noise

There were a few too many teams I guess that worked on it... I mean how many different Serenas did we have because of cast swaps? :/ But still, I wonder just who they'll get for the dub. Any of the old voices? Old woman Luna tbh is part of my childhood.

Three in total.

Tracey Moore
Terri Hawkes
Linda Ballantyne

The only old voice I can potentially see getting brought back to reprise their role is Katie Griffin. Especially if it's a Vancouver dub as with many Viz properties.
Frankly, I'm looking forward to seeing a full recasting. Plenty of great talent out there that could work wonders with these roles.

Interest lost. So let me get this straight, they won't be streaking the original sailor moon in English?

Wait a second does this mean they'll use the new cast instead of the old one for their eventual dub of the upcoming series?

Shit, my old ADV and Pioneer releases just became worthless, didn't they?

Maybe...

My CCS uncut boxes suffered the same fate when NISA announced their release. (But I'm getting that soon lol) I need to replace my Sailor Moon R movie DVD anyway, it's all scratched up on the bottom for some odd reason.

They're going to get the episode missing from the ADV sets?

I am so going to buy the crap out of these BluRays.

and never get around to watching them. but NOSTALGIA.

Damn, that is a lot of episodes to cover with an all new dub. I can see this airing on Adult Swim or Hub with that much effort put into it.

It's an LA dub. Outside of InuYasha: TFA, I can't remember the last time Viz did something in Canada (HunterXHunter?).

There are phenomenal VAs in Los Angeles so I'm definitely enthused. Thanks for passing that interview along.
It's wild to think that we'll now have a consistent dub through the entire 200-episode run but a cast that can also be transitioned over to the new anime series coming out this summer.
