New PS4 and PS3 Models Revealed by Certification Request Filed by Sony

Thank you for answering with some good explanation fellow GAFfer. As I stated I had no idea since I'm someone who do not follow the hardware part so I don't know what to expect. I'll be happy as long it's something good for the consumer. With the example you provided me then we can expect something like less power consumption, less heat, etc, correct?

If they're moving to a smaller process chipset then there should be some marginal improvements on those two things, yes. That should result in slightly improved reliability of the hardware and extend its lifespan, though that's hard to say for certain when all variables are taken into account.

Of course, it could just also mean that Sony's found a way to bring down the cost of components or had to switch one internal component for another functionally identical one for unrelated reasons. (There was some talk that the eDRAM Nintendo uses in the Wii-U would cease to be manufactured, as an example, which would require a new model version if they were to replace it with a different component, even if it performed the same task.)

a new model doesn't necessarily mean a redesign of the console, it could just be a mobo change or internal hardwar change.

As for PS3, I would like to see a Cell+RSX MCM with stacked RAM and 64GB flash. No HDD. That would cut around $70 from the current BoM (~$210 to ~$140) once there I don't see how Sony will make the PS3 any cheaper other than possible a couple of respins of current silicon to drive up yields, but those are $10-15 savings at best. Still, it would make a non-HDD SKU viable in terms of storage space and it would be positive for margins.

I'm curious how small they can get the PS3. I've had one of each model, and the Super Slim is both cheaper-feeling (thin retractable disc cover) and consequently louder than the previous Slim.

I wonder if they could get it down to the size of a Wii? (with external PSU like the Wii). If the CELL is getting reduced, they'd not need such a big PSU or fan. That sort of size would be ace, but probably unlikely.

It's pretty much the other way around. PS4 update this early is surprising but I doubt it's anything big. PS3 revision was pretty much expected now with how the news came out that they were able to shrink Cell.
I guess so. Just didn't see PS3 getting more attention

Super slim was so hideous, I refuse to get one instead of the previous slim model. I will wait for this new model but that depends if my PS3 needs to be replaced in future.

As silly as it sounds, even to me, I'm already excited by the prospects of a slim PS4 a couple years down the road. It's so small already, I'm curious to see how much smaller it will get.

Nice, I can finally replace my PS3 fat but only if its 150 ...

Dont care about the hard drive size as I can do that myself

It's obvious, to be honest...

... it's the stacked GDDR5 that comes un-stacked. Firmware update 1.80 for current owners. Sony just realised now that it needs to present what #greatnessawaits really means.

16 GB of GDDR5.

It is also revealed to have stacked SSHD, processor and controllers.

Shrinking Cell and RSX makes a lot of sense for Playstation Now and its power consumption bills. Why not put them in a new PS3 as well?

surely not a die shrink already? unless they launched on some crazy large process and this is a correction to a more normal one.

hmm
There are several possibles for PS4 as it's likely being made at Global Foundries not TSMC. AMD Investor Conference confirmed Game console chips were being made at Global Foundries.

1) Revision to use 8Gb GDDR5
2) FD-SOI (Global Foundries only at this time)
3) 20nm and HBM to replace GDDR5 (Global Foundries only at this time).

Or any combination of the above with # 3 highly unlikely this year.

Ps3
- higher capacity flash memory 32/64 GB

Ps4
- reduction of 16 ram chips to 8
- larger hdd

It would be nice if I finally got one of my predictions right.

Getting it Wii U-sized would be great, even with a power brick. I can't see myself buying another hardware iteration anytime soon, but the PS3 was easily my favorite console of all-time. It deserves a cooler send-off than the Super Slim.

Also, what're people going to call it? The Super Duper Slim?

They should just stack 4 PS4s together for 32GB GDDR5.

what if they did that but without the 64GB flash? So sticking with something like 12-16GB with a HDD bay?

You don't think it's too early for Interposer connecting 22nm Cell and RSX to one of the AMD-Hynix wafers in a HBM stack giving 1GB of custom unified memory using the Sony patent?

I'll add that they might replace FlexIO with PCIe and they could use the same Southbridge the PS4 uses as it's cheaper.

This would be my guess, perhaps in time for xmas to cut Sony costs to allow for a bundled game.

Ha, if this new revision allows them to bundle a game in with the hardware and announce that at E3 that would be a big shot at Microsoft.

Maybe something to address the lag on PS Vita tv or something having to do with PS Now, maybe a better wifi transmitter

My guess is this.

Maybe Sony might reduce the 500gb PS4 to $379 and introduce a 1tb or 750gb PS4 at the old $399 price.

$399 camera bundle, $350 base model.

Maximum laughs to happen.

What's the point? Demand is outstripping supply even without Sony's AAA games aside from a few. They can ride this wave until Fall 2015 at current pricing if they start releasing their top games throughout next year.

Yeah, I don't see any possibility of price cuts to the PS4. With Sony's financial position being as it is, they will take the margin this holiday and cut to $299 next year if necessary. Right now Sony need to look at their bottom line, if they have a way to increase margins on a popular product then the prudent course would be to reap the gain rather than pass the savings on, at least immediately. The competition is weak enough for Sony to sit at $399 for another 16-18 months.
