Aren't big SSDs crazy expensive? And which ones specifically? The best would obviously be a SSD inside a 3.0 casing.
Other then that get a western digital or seagate.

That HD looks like it might have an external power source (not powered over USB), does anyone know if the XB1 USB ports give out enough juice to power an external HD without an external power adaptor?
So any idea what's the best external HDD with good read/write speeds?
I'm pretty sure this problem is built right into the SDK. It's present in all XB1 games, but some developers adjust for it better than others. Check out the Digital Foundry face-off for Rayman Legends. It's 1080p and it's black level is darker than the PS4 version.
The external add on is very nice, my HDD isnt that full yet though, how many games do you guys have installed on your xbox one?
The internal drive is 5,400 rpm. So anything above that should improve the performance.
Looking at Smartglass it says 14, it would be 15 but I didn't have enough space to install Wolfenstein so Tomb Raider had to go (sorry Lara). The external add on is very nice, my HDD isnt that full yet though, how many games do you guys have installed on your xbox one?
Thanks!Someone asked that on twitter and Major Nelson replied that he has been using a bus powered drive, and it's been working great.
Great
Still undecided on a 2 or 4TB eHDD tho
Don't make that a hardware thing, put a notification on the screen instead. I'm not looking down that often.
Thanks man.The internal drive is 5,400 rpm. So anything above that should improve the performance.
Can't wait for external storage to be available. Now to get a nice external drive to keep me covered. I saw that Major Nelson suggested, does GAF has any suggestions for drives?
I'm thinking of buying a drive but I wonder if a USB powered one would be ok. Or should I get one with it's own power supply?
Yeah, but Ryse and EA's Frostbyte games don't have the same issue. Maybe it has to do with games that display the rendered images on one display plane and the UI on another plane?
EDIT: Also, I don't trust Digital Foundry. Xbox One doesn't send a signal to HDTVs to account for switching from Limited to Full Range like PS3 and PS4. You have to manually change the setting on your TV which is find for my old Samsung, but some TVs don't allow for the manual change, like my new Bravia, so I can't even play in Full Range. I don't understand why the gamma issues can't be fixed. It should be easy.
The thing is it's not something they think needs to be fixed. There were actually quotes from Microsoft about this regarding the 360, as it had the same black crush. They said they do it because most people TVs out of the box benefit from this tweak. So in their minds it's a reaction to match most consumer TVs being a bit off themselves.
That's what bothers me most, and I wish we could get Phil Spencer to recognize that it's a serious issue for people who are serious about image quality. That mentality is 360-MS and not the more recent image we're getting with XB1.
I've been on Xbox Live since day one and I've still never seen the need for the "real name" thing. I've got tons of close and "real life" friends on Xbox Live and I've never had problems forgetting who they are based on their gamer tag.
Hold on now before they fix teh gamma output let them fix the Full RGB output first. This fucking box shows nothing between 0-15. Just crushes all dem blacks.
seriously?!?!wooooot OneGuide for Canada and auto sign in!!
I like how they let you take your external drive to a friends house, that makes it very handy without having to install stuff again. I'd have expected them to have encrypted the HDD to your personal Xbox one.
Real names I'm mixed on. I like the idea, but tbh I'd prefer to be able to add my own metadata to friends. Eg if you're 'bob' on gaf, but your xbox one gamertag is 'randomgamer11!1' then I'd like to be able to call you bob. I don't know your real name and that won't help me know who you are.
Rearranging your pins is about time. You can kind of do it 'tower of hanoi' style on the current software, but moving them around using smartglass will be a lot more convenient
TV stuff is ok but a bit disappointing for me in the preview. Hopefully they let me pause my tivo in the update - the preview didn't let me do that. How will they let you set recordings etc? Have they added LAN control for some DVRs?
tbh my tivo app on my ipad is already convenient for that so I probably wouldn't use that.
seriously?!?!
getting interested in getting a xb1 again
fake edit: lol says it right in the OP, not sure how my eyes skipped it
One day..
That same day we might get Viva Pinata 3![]()
It seems like such an easy and obvious thing to add if they could, it makes me wonder if perhaps something about the Xbone's render pipeline/RAM setup makes it impossible or very difficult for them.
Having it as a voice command really wouldn't work, considering the time it'd take to quickly say it and have the console recognise and process what you've said (especially since it waits a second or two to see if you say anything else), you'd miss the screenshot opportunity. I think double-tapping the home button without an app snapped would be the best way.
Yeah, that would be nice. I hope they add it before Sunset Overdrive comes out.

Just wondering, is USB 3.0 fast enough for this? Like, would you notice a performance difference in a game installed to the external hard drive as opposed to the internal one? I guess this would depend on the game (maybe affecting something like Watch Dogs more than something like Killer Instinct)?
Surprised noone is complaining about the lack of Xbox.com integration for XB1, they've really fallen down on that one.
Huh? My TiVo has worked from day one. Pause, play, red, ffwd...

Anyone looking for a 2TB USB 3.0 drive for this update, this is a pretty great deal.

Yeah this is the same drive that Major Nelson used in the video but only 2TB instead of 4.

That's exactly what I was talking about. Now I'm confused.
Show me the thread where people are deciding to buy Xbox One because you can plug in an external hard drive and take your games to another Xbox One. Its a feature that WiiU has and in both cases it is out of necessity. You cannot change the small internal drive so the alternative is giving you the ability to expand via external drive. An advantage it is not.
Better off getting the 2TB version on Amazon especially if you have Prime.

Damn, that's cheap.
