2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Have you manually set Steam to use the integrated? It usually defaults to the Nvidia GPU.

I use a wooden lap table to protect myself; that one looks like a good option too.

Since you'll be carrying it around school a lot, the 13.3" Sager NP7338 may be the better buy.
Thanks, I'll pick up the lapdesk. So, I called MSI about the alternating lights on the power button. He said it shouldn't be doing that. Optimus must be confused. I should reinstall my Nvidia and Intel drivers from the MSI website. I did and it fixed it. After a gaming session I wanted to check my GPU temps and noticed Afterburner wasn't running. I started it up and it started blinking orange and blue over and over. So, I guess it wasn't a driver issue, but Afterburner interfering. Guess I can't use that program.

Hi everyone,

My Toshiba Qosmio X870 is running super hot with certain games, sometimes to the point where the laptop just shut down. Living in a tropical country doesn't help I guess, I put the AC on when playing sometimes but I need to think about my electric bill as well.

Anyway, Do you guys have any comments about Laptop cooling pad ? Are they really helping to solve this problem ? It's a 17-inch laptop. Any recommendation are welcome.

Thanks

Little update.. Since the Y50s are in huge demand there might be even a bigger delay than before.. As you know, no one has received one yet.. They said mine will ship on 6/11 but who knows at this point.. I'm actually considering cancelling my order and going with a MSi or Sager..

They also have added various models as well.. Most people are certain that all the GPUs in the device will be Maxell variants of the 860m but some are skeptical since some models are 2 GB vRam while others are 4 GB which is equivalent to the inferior Kepler model. Anyways I really am somewhat disappointed that I have to wait but I will still give this a chance.. The Laptop is very attractive considering the size and hardware, but I don't mind the heavier and nosier Sager either..

There is a 4GB Maxwell 860M.

Interesting. I'll have to remember that for the next person.

If the cause of the overheating issue is that the fans are clogged with dust, a cooling pad won't help.

Unfortunately Toshiba designed the machine poorly, making there be a lot of work to get to the fans

How are sager products and do they ship out of us like Saudi Arbia. Also how is the screen quality

Average, you can find a seller in your region, but you could get one from the US. Contact XoticPC.

the screens are as good as anyone else's

My friend is looking for a new laptop and these are the requirements.
Country: USA
Budget: $600
Screen Size: doesn't matter
Uses: Use for streaming with capture card and play Street Fighter 4 at low/medium settings.

He sent me links for some he was thinking of getting:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834313719

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HC349I2/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I think the Acer should be able to handle those tasks easily but he wouldn't mind getting the Lenovo and saving some money lol.

For $599, this Acer destroys the one he linked you. Same CPU, much faster GPU.

So it's between that and the Lenovo.

OK, so you guys seem pretty clever when it comes to this stuff, would appreciate some recommendations. I've got a budget of around £450-500 (lets say around $700-$800), and basically want something as proficient when it comes to gaming as possible for the price. Ideally, it'd be around 15" and not incredibly thick or heavy, and I'd like something quite aesthetically sleek, something that doesn't look too Alienware-ish and gamer focused in its looks, but I'm fairly lax on those things. Some stuff I've found so far:

Lenovo Z510
Acer Aspire V5-572G
Asus X550LB

To clarify, I don't desperately need to be able to play absolutely everything with it, that won't happen with my budget, just whatever is possible for that pricepoint. Basically enough to play, like, Bioshock Infinite or Civ 5 at 30fps on Medium/High settings.

I got that exact z510 about two weeks ago and am happy with it so far. Mostly just use it for minecraft, which runs well enough on the integrated graphics. I did add another 4GB to it, which is a bit of a pain but worth doing and about £25

I can try bioshock and civ5 tomorrow for you if you like, just need to download them on steam. I'd expect them to be ok on that machine.

The Asus is the cutest, but can't game. The Lenovo is the strongest, and the one I'd take.

so on that exact machine (albeit upgraded to 8GB ram), I'm getting

Bioshock infinite:
benchmarking tool
- high detail, average 37fps
- medium detail, average 44 fps

CivV new game so almost nothing on the screen..
- all settings on high, 2xMSAA - average 44fps

Sorry, I meant SkyFire IV. Either way if that's what you meant anyway, why is it so expensive in the US? ugh! :(
Well, the seemingly low GBP price on PCSpecialist is a lie.

If you take a closer look at the configuration page, they start with low grade components:

UK vs US

1600x900 vs 1080p
Intel Pentium dual core vs i7-4700MQ quad
4GB RAM vs 8GB
500GB HDD vs 1TB HDD

Hi everyone,

I have been looking for a powerful gaming laptop for quite some time now. I read a lot about overheating. But, what does that translate into? Does performance get worse, or do they just straight up break?

Anyway, my budget is 2000$.

Screen size i guess 15.6 can be higher.

I believe 860m is not good enough as a GPU. For that kind of money I better get good performance.

One of the most important things: The laptop needs to be elegant. Most companies are moving that way. So no red abominations. No Alienware.

I like the MSI Ghost and Stealth (especially the 3k edition) But cant find any reliable sources on benchmarks in game and heat production.

I might consider a Asus RoG, while there are black,,, there are not very discrete.

Does anyone have some advice for me?

Look into the MSI GT70 series. You can get one with a 880M under $2000.

I have one from 2012 with a 680M and it's performed pretty well for the most part. Yeah, sometimes it does get hot, but you just gotta use one of those compressed air things to dust it out regularly.

Well, elegant means a Ghost Pro.

Or you could configure an NP8268-S w/ GTX 880M for that price.

So I've been looking to upgrade for awhile and my current laptop just up and died.

I'm in the US, primary use is just for random internet browsing and games like Hearthstone and random Indy titles and my max budget is around $1000.

Is there anywhere that either ships very quickly or are there any decent deals at places like Best Buy? I don't want to be without a computer for long.

Thanks man, I gave it a shot and removed a lot of dust. My laptop is not shutting down anymore. Still hot tho but yeah...it's like 90°F these days here.

Thanks again !

So, anyone who is looking for a laptop and is Canadian might want to check this out.

http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-749547.../laptops/lenovo/y-series/y410p&sid=rfdcb-d723

There's a y410 going for $279. Error or not I ordered one for shits and giggles. Will let you know what comes of this.
As folks in the Canadian Sales thread are aware, this pricing error wasn't honored by Lenovo.
We all placed shits & giggles orders on the off chance that it might be.

This deal did open my eyes up to recent laptop specs & pricing and what I can expect when I finally decide to pull the trigger on upgrading from my current Gateway NV75S (which is nearing its 3-year anniversary). I'm in no real rush (this system still runs fine boasting 8GB of RAM and a BluRay player) but I wouldn't mind switching over to a laptop that can game decently.

Lenovo's got a decent system in the y510p for a smidge over $800 Canadian - although it was cheaper a few months back (may have been the i5, though) and their customer service during the whole price error fallout didn't endear me much to them. Most of the other decent gaming alternatives are in the $1000-1200 range and I'm leaning more towards netting an HP Pavilion for under $700 if I can't find something on par with that Lenovo option.

Seeing how I'm not in a rush, any ideas on where I should be keeping my eyes and ears open as it pertains to deals - apart from the obvious "wait for Back 2 School deals in August" suggestion?

Always makes me sad when people in the USA/Canada bring up the y510. Is so much more expensive in Europe it isn't funny. £1000 ($1675) and I think they only offer one SKU. It's a great little laptop but the price is just ouch

It's 999 euros at a Dutch webshop. About 160 euros more expensive than in the US but still not as bad as in the UK then. Sucks.

Hello GAF, a little help here? Buying a new laptop, my budget is enough for an i5 3xxxx or 4xxxx with 4 or 6GB RAM and the following GPUs:

740M
745M
8750M
R7 M265

Which should I go for?

The laptop I'm currently considering has i5 4200, 4GB RAM and Radeon 8750M; it's on a very deep discount (50% off, being phased out in favor of R7 200 line of models I presume, because the same laptop with the +7 M265 is twice its price) would you recommend against it?

I'm aiming for 1366x768 resolution gaming at around medium detail levels. I usually play 1-2 year old games when they are fairly cheap. My main gaming PC is an Athlon II X4 640 and Radeon 7770 just so you know what I am fairly content with. Thanks!

Okay, a couple years ago I picked up an Asus N53S for myself, and my sons each got Acers (I don't remember the models on theirs). My Asus is still kicking and doing a pretty good job for what I want it to do.

The Acers, however, have taken a beating. Mostly because the boys are always on them, either for school, the Internet or for playing.

So, I'm thinking new laptops for them. However, I don't want to go ape-shit because the eldest is finishing up his sophomore year and it's likely when he goes to college he'll either need another upgrade or get specific instructions about the type of machine he'll need.

In other words, I need another two year machine.

Country where it will be purchased: USA
Maximum budget: $600
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight): They have 15.6 displays now, so I'd like to keep it there.

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all). Ideally you'll point out what resolution and settings are your standard, based off of what I've laid out in the OP:
The Acer is 720p and runs Diablo 3 pretty well. I'd say Intel Quad Core with an nVidia would be the choice here. I'm going to doubt that I can get them into 1080p at the budget above. We have consoles for many of the games they want to play, but they really want to enjoy things like D3, Minecraft and other Steam games they pick up on sale (so not necessarily the latest/greatest) at medium to medium-high settings without suffering lag.

Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc.

Yeah, that order had a snowball's chance in hell of going through. But hey, weirder things HAVE happened. At this point I think I'm just going to pull the trigger on the y50. I just want to see a few new hands-on impressions and reviews before I pull the trigger on one.

My brother is interested in a low-budget laptop. He doesn't really want to game on it but to me there is a cheap Dell that I am eyeing. It has a Intel Core i3-4030U and he would really like to play DOTA 2.

Since DOTA 2 is pretty CPU hungry, does somebody know how well it would run with that CPU?

If he wants to game, he needs a couple of gb ram and a dedicated graphiccard. I think the cpu isnt a sign of how well a game runs on it.
Especially playing games on a system, maybe your borther should spend a couple of extra bucks for that.

I have also a question:
Hm, does it make a big difference to buy the late 2013 model of the macbook pro which still costs 1500euro here in germany or to wait until next week when apple maybe announces new macbooks?

Also if they announce them, how long will it take until the will get released or ready to buy?

I dont have a clue of notebooks, i bought the lenovo b560 in 2010 and i hate that it is pretty loud, too warm oh and the screen has a low res.

So any idea if the macbook pro is the right choice? I dont play on my laptop, i just want to work, surf and code comfortably.

Oh and watch a few hd movies on it...

It won't be running at 60fps, but the i3 and its HD4400 can certainly run DOTA 2,

I've read rumor that the new Macbooks are coming in Q3 of this year. If you don't game, I see no reason to wait for the new ones.

So when does the Maxwell Mobile GPU's come out? I know that the GTX 860m has either a Maxwell and Kepler GPU.

No one know when more Maxwell GPUs are coming,

I'm predicting Q1 of 2015.

He isn't planning to game a lot on it, just DOTA 2, where the CPU is more important than the GPU. And maybe some indie games, but many of them are less demanding.

That is what I figured, too bad it can't reach 60 FPS even on low, but I think he'll be fine.

Thanks! One last question, should I hold off until say end of summer (because I can) in anticipation of a price cut on the current 740m/745m models once the 8xx and R7 200m series hit the market?

There is currently no timetable for new mobile GPUs, so I can't say whether you should wait, or not.

So I was thinking of getting the surface pro 3 when it releases and was wondering about its capability for gaming. It has a 2160x1440 display meaning its a 3:2 aspect ratio. Do games these days even have 3:2 support?

I am looking to pick up an MSI Ghost, but not sure if the 860m I'll be getting is Kepler or Maxwell.

Is there anyway to tell which one is it?

Edit: Seems all MSI Ghosts come with the Kepler variant of the 860M. Shame, was really excited for it.

Some games max out at 1080p, but modern games are usually supporting such a resolution.

I'm looking for a new laptop. Is this computer:
http://www.xoticpc.com/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-e431-62775gu-p-7092.html?wconfigure=yes with everything the default except with 12 gb of ram a good deal for a gaming laptop, or can I do better?
And would that even be a good gaming laptop?

That's pretty much the worst you could.

Hey guys, I just picked up this laptop for about 600 dollars:

http://shop.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/lenovo/z-series/z40/?sb=:000001CA:0000558C:#customize

Just want to know if it will run Civ 5 decently.
Mainly using it for stuff like Rise of Nations/AoM/AoE etc. older strategy games, hopefully Beyond Earth at low-mid settings.

Yeah the CPU will get you by well, in Civ 5.

Man I can't wait for Beyond Earth!

Hi guys. Typical story, my laptop just died, so here I am, lol. Replacing a 2010 Macbook Pro.

My question is the following: looking around at reviews, I see a ton of laptops competing with the Macbook Air (the Ultrabooks, basically), and a ton of chunky gaming laptops (not for me, thanks), but very little that seems to compete directly with the Macbook Pro 15'. Am I right in thinking that? What are the options for a similarly spec'd Windows machine?

I travel a ton and do a lot of photography and editing in Lightroom and Aperture so my most important features are
-Screen: both colour reproduction and resolution, minimum 15 inches
-Battery life (minimum 5 hours, absolute minimum, preferably 8 or more)
-And then the best specs I can get considering the above, as I do like to play whatever my laptop can manage from time to time

Looking around, either I'm blind or my best option is to go back to a Macbook Pro again, which is pricey. I live in Ireland but am flying into New York for one night in a couple of days before going on to the Caribbean for two month's work so anything online is right out - it needs to be something I can buy on the ground in New York. It will be cheaper for me to buy anything in a bricks and mortar store in the US than online here in Ireland, I'm sure of it. Limits my options though.

Any advice appreciated.

MSI GS60 Stealth?

Thanks for the tip. That is a nice looking laptop alright, but
a) It's over my budget which is around 2,000 dollars or 1,500 euros, and
b) It gets around 3 hours battery - not nearly enough for me, sadly.

If I was buying it to use mostly on a desk at home and had the extra cash I'd seriously consider that one, though.

Hey guys, I just picked up this laptop for about 600 dollars:

Just want to know if it will run Civ 5 decently.
Mainly using it for stuff like Rise of Nations/AoM/AoE etc. older strategy games, hopefully Beyond Earth at low-mid settings.

You can run Civ 5, especially the "tactical mode" or whatever it's called, on a potato. I say this from experience.

i5-520m with Intel HD Graphics got 20-40 fps in native 1280x800 on a mix of low to med settings.
