Super Smash Bros. Invitational @ E3 2014 participants, hosts and rules detailed

Love the nod Nintendo is giving to the pro smash community, but I can't help but be casually pessimistic that the competitive parts of the game are going to be slightly improved to Brawl's. :(

I'm sorry but the rules are fucking awful.

You had one job Nintendo....

Their one job is promoting this game. This is a nice way to do it but you have to remember that their number one priority wasn't holding a pro tournament but rather advertising what will probably be their biggest game of holiday season 2014.

Can't believe the announcers got actual newcomer title cards. That's great!

What's the bit about a fan-voted fan favorite bracket?

Also, why does the GCN adapter have a GCN shaped cable coming from it? Shouldn't that be a USB cable?

Interesting participants. Happy that Amsa's in and D1 and Prog are commentating.

Awesome, Gamecube controller adapters! : D

The rules make total sense when you consider this is basically a way to show off the games. Like it or not, items are a huge part of the game as is free for all. And forcing each player to be a different character means showing off more characters as well

Yeah this is how I see it. Ending it with a 1v1 on BF makes perfect sense when you think about it from this point of view.

What does LiquidKen and LiquidKDJ mean?

To sell their game, yes.

The best way to do that is to show off the content within it.

If only they had another means of delivering information to players that is frequently used by them, unrestricted by time limits, free from the contextual framing of a "tournament," and is readily available to all internet-goers...

Maybe they could call it a Direct.

Also, it mentioned that the participants will choose one character through a draft, which I assume means no mirror matches.

Not a problem, just interesting.

It really isn't a huge deal, and I get that this is just advertising, but would it really have hurt to do a standard tournament?

Imagine how mad people are gonna get when somebody breezes through the preliminaries because it turns out that one Final Smash is totally unbalanced.

Character Draft

On the morning of the tournament, each player will draw a number from a hat, ranging from 1 through 16. Players will then pick characters one by one based on their numerical order starting with 1. After a character is chosen, they are no longer selectable by any other player. Players must keep the same character throughout the entire event.
Super Smash Bros. Invitational Highlights

*Grand Finals is a 4-stock, 8-minute, 1-on-1 match on Battlefield as an homage to the competitive Smash Bros. community.

Didn't think about that; whoever picks ZSS and Olimar should make it a top priority to get the Smash Ball.

Edit: =/

The ruleset is really disappointing. I can understand items on since they want to show off the game, but having it be 4 player ffa is just going to make it not fun to watch. There's going to be too much stuff going to keep track of everything.

wait for the inevitable gamexplain frame by frame analysis vid...

Man, the best part of this tournament is that the mixed ruleset ensures that nobody is happy. We get bitter tears from both sides of the aisle!

Curious that the finals are on Battlefield after the big "no items final destination only" mode debacle. If their idea of serious play was FD, why not play it there? It's Nintendo, so I'm not prepared to believe they actually reacted to the fan feedback that quickly, but a curiosity nonetheless.

I'm not that that familiar with the smash pro players but I want know they guy from least years Evo would played ice climbers and who did the "whable" all the time (I really don't know if his nickname was Whable).

Is he on the list?
I loved watching him play.

This tournament doesn't have a cash prize, does it? If not, then does it really matter if this invitational isn't following traditional competitive Smash rules?

Either way, I guess it is cool that we'll get to see people who are, you know, good at playing games like this instead of watching a bunch of journalists putz around with it until it comes out.

No offense to those guys, it's just that this is a nice change of pace. I'm excited.
