Watched through Digimon Tamers (its on Netflix in case you didn't know.) I guess watching now, being slightly older and actually "getting" the story, I really like it and it is my favorite season.

Still haven't tried Savers or Xross Wars yet. Both those seasons don't look too interesting to me though anyway.

If you actually like Tamers' theme, then you'll love Savers.

Those seasons are more Digimon focused

Okay so i used to like digimon back when I was younger and for one reason or another I completely stopped watching it and every time something digimon pops up I get curious about a few things.

How many Digimon have there been now?
Is everything in the same continuity?
Do the old guys like Tai? and Agumon ever turn up in later stuff?
Can some die hard fan give me quick description of all the shows and what they are about?
Are some digivolves exclusive to certain shows?
What is the highest tier of digivolve shown to date? WarGreymon was the last big thing I can remember.

Is Digimon Fusion (Xros) better in japanese? I watched the first episode in English, and Mikey (Taiki) sounds terrible. I want to watch the show, but the voice work upsets me :/

That's a good question, because I could never find something like a dex number for them, and they are revealed all the time instead of in bulk like Pokémon.

Some are, some aren't. Then there's some stuff that happens in some.

Do the old guys like Tai? and Agumon ever turn up in later stuff?
They do. Not gonna be specific because of spoilers.

Yes. For example, Taichi's Agumon becomes WarGreymon in his final stage, but Masaru's (in Savers, S05) becomes ShineGreymon.

What is the highest tier of digivolve shown to date? WarGreymon was the last big thing I can remember.
I'd say maybe Susanoomon from Frontier (S04), given that he's the result of a fusion between 10 ancient digimon of the highest level.
It's interesting to note that after the last stage (Ultimate in JP, Mega in EN), they just keep powering up and up without getting another named stage, so you see stuff like WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon getting wrecked, but win easily when fused despite still being Ultimate in that form.
.

Last I checked, it's nearing almost 1000. (Including form changes, different types, subspecies, etc.)
No idea on an exact number. They aren't classified terribly well.

Highest level is Super Ultimate (or "Ultra"), though I don't think it's been shown in any of the actual shows. Has popped up in Manga and the Video Games.
There's basically only a few of these guys and they're all obscenely powerful.
Most sources bunch them in with the other Megas though for convenience.
Levels are kinda wonky and inconsistent anyways, and some media ignore them completely.

I only watched Digimon Adventure 01, 02 and Digimon Frontier. Tamers seems good but back in the time when I was a kid, I didn't like because it was so different from the two first seasons.

Maybe I need to give it more of a chance, but Adventure 01 is much better in my memories. Went through the first few episodes in Japanese on Netflix (BTW, can't believe that I could say that about Digimon of all things.) and it just didn't hold up in my mind. Again though, maybe I need to give it more of a chance?

Hopefully Savers/Data Squad follows suit. I only have the first English dub sets, which are not only limited in episode scope, but only contain the dub (Which I've heard is shit.)

Digimon Adventure in Japanese is serious business. It's a great piece of animation, with very good characters with a great plot and interesting sub-plots.

While there is human focus, Savers and Xros are more about the Digimon than the humans.

Hilariously enough I'm different - I can't stand Tamers but love Savers, as well as Xros Wars and Adventure.

Its the darkest story with the most fleshed out main cast and super special awesome Digimon evolutions. It was different from Adventure 1 but in a good way.

And its the first series I like the Yamato-esque character in the show, Ruki.

In my mind, 03/01>>04>02.

I only watched Digimon Adventure 01, 02 and Digimon Frontier. Tamers seems good but back in the time when I was a kid, I didn't like because it was so different from the two first seasons.

Tamers breaks away from the standard tropes established by the first 2 series and gives you characters that are not extreme in one direction. The Juri plot was also a bit complicated, so as a kid, I didn't appreciate it as much as I do now. But even back then, because the mons and their evolutions were awesome as hell, I was hooked as a kid.

Savers is far darker than Tamers, but Season 4 ruined Digimon so bad that nobody gave it a chance.

Frontier was not bad. Its just that Savers first couple of episodes didn't do anything for me. The only good thing I can say about it is that Greymon looks cool

and the intro sucks compared to butterfly and biggest dreamer

Remember I watched an episode wit my likkle bro a few years ago. Not sure what season it was.

There was some blonde kid and some grim reaper type digimon. The reaper was torturing him by playing memories of his moms death (hit and run?) and blaming him for it. The kid was gettin torn apart mentally.

I remember thinking, rah, digimon got dark as hell.

Savers/Data Squad.

Savers picks up once they decide to head to the Digital World.

Why hasn't there been another season/series where the human and the digimon fuse to reach the highest digivolution like in Tamers? Or the humans becoming digimons like in Frontiers?
It would be cool if the next season/series had had either of these types of digivolutions.

That's what I don't like about it, it felt too try hard in the "dark" aspect but never really felt it, like it was holding back without embracing what it is.

Could it be because of how "underage" the characters were? I know Savers aged the characters up, which might be why you like it more? Seems more realistic a bunch of late teens/early twenties protags can handle the pressure more than 14 year olds.

edit: Reading through the wiki, seems the main character is 14. Weird, seems much older from the character design.

Before even reading this post, I just rewatched that episode in Japanese (not seen the dub version of it yet though I like the Data Squad dub from what I've seen) thanks to this thread.

That episode is still awesome. Also love how Touma
doesn't bother to move when MetalPhantoMon uses Soul Predator. Just a "Come at me bro" stance lol. That episode is when I begun to like Touma as well.

Just started watching Savers for the first time. Skipped ahead a bit since every season starts slow. Saw the episode you guys are talking about and a few around it. Only real issue I have with it is character outlines being random as hell. Sometimes you won't see them and sometimes they'll be ridiculously thick.

Am I the only one that truly loved Digimon Frontier? Its my 2nd favorite outside of the original season.

Agunimon and all of those guys were so badass.

Frontier seem pretgyed hated by most :(

Juri was a messed up child right from the get-go. She misses her real mom, who presumably the only one she confined with. Doctor says nothing can be done to save Juri's mom, aka destiny. She got awkward father-issues and step-mom relationship problems. Then comes Leomon who befriends and fills a needed void for her, only to end up killed with his final words being its "destiny". She blames herself for his death, goes into depression, and gets kidnapped by D-Reaper.

All in all it comes down to this climax and one of the most gut wrenching scenes as a kid:

So, it made sense for what has happened in the series, and why its so dark.

I hated the idea of removing partners so much that I never gave it a chance as a kid. Watched it again about a year ago and it's not too bad. It has arguably the best cast of kids of any of the first four seasons. Biggest problem I had is how much it dragged on late in the season.
After they defeat Cherubimon, the next 10 or so episodes are all basically identical to each other where they try to keep the royal knights from getting the world code but get beat every single time.

I liked Frontier as well especially for the fact that the humand turned into digimon.

Yeah no partner was strange at first, but being a kid at the time and also watching Power Rangers. I welcomed the idea of the human kids fusing with their digimon spirit.

Yeah I agree, probably the best human cast Ive seen in Digimon, love the English theme song too, sure it definitely dragged a bit toward the end.

But you gotta admit, the digimon spirit thing was unique and awesome. Morphing sequences were the best thing about the show.

This was so damn good.

I liked it, it is one of the weaker seasons imo but I did enjoy it which surprised me considering how much hate I heard for it before I watched it.

Nah it's more of design difference than age. Savers has a different overall human design vs the others. With that said Ikuto looks like someone from the other series.

That's why I don't like Tamers really. That whole thing felt forced to me, felt like they made it like that just for the sake of appealing to be dark.

I liked Frontier. At first I hated the idea of humans turning into Digimons. But then I got used, and the Digimons were very cool. Also it had a great soundtrack, at least in my country's dub version.

And the Digiworld was very beautiful in Frontier.

Frontier had a really good thing coming to it.

Too bad it was ruined when halfway through it became the Takuya and Kouji show.

I can respect that. I'd be all for up-aged characters(with better character design) in the next series, assuming there is another one.

That's something that bothered me in the first two series, then they fixed it in Tamers, only to botch it again in Frontier and fix it yet again in Savers...

I hope they make another season with only 3 main characters so they don't have to pick two to power up.

Digimon is and will always be better than Pokemon

come at me, poke-fans

I definitely was "that kid" that grew up liking Digimon along with my best friend while everyone else adored Pokemon. I still remember my friend coming into school (we were in... 4th grade I think) with this awesome Kyubimon action figure thing and him and I geeking out over it.

I still like Pokemon though.

The anime is certainly better (though I do think the Pokemon anime doesn't get enough credit; it was probably one of the best kids' shows when it came out and the later seasons are still good kid fare for the most part). In totality though? Eh. I think Pokemon is the overall stronger brand. I like the critters more, the games are top tier, and the tcg was fun back in the day.

Think I'm a little past halfway through Savers and besides character outlines being weird the only other issue I'm having is the small amounts of sexism throughout it from the main character. Getting annoying at how much he says about doing stuff a man's way.
