Digimon thread

I've also wanted to play a Digimon game, but I'm not sure if any of them are good.
Skip Digimon World 1 through 4, they're not very good and/or haven't aged well at all. I made a semi-detailed post about each game, but it was a while ago and I don't know if I can find it through GAF search.

Digimon Dawn/Dusk are the go-to games, though. Very good on their own, and also have some Pokemon-like traits when it comes to breeding.

EDIT: Found my post
DW3 isn't awful, and does a good job with the turn-based style of RPG fights, but the lack of any quick-travel options hurts the game badly. Not to mention it's easy to forget your next objective. I've owned the game for years, and I STILL have no clue what I'm supposed to do next.

DO NOT touch DW4. It's easily one of the worst games I've played. It tried to hook people with the X-Men Legends style of gameplay (4P co-op, leveling and equips, etc.), but it failed miserably in the execution. I couldn't get rid of the game fast enough.

The DS games are fantastic. They have a system in place similar to Pokemon's EVs, but it's even less required and much easier than Pokemon. The battles look really simplistic with barely any animations, but it's not a huge deal. Digivolving is also different from the other games. Each Digimon has a level cap that can only be raised by digivolving up or down a level. DW4 tried this system, but the game botched it by having your stats reset to 1 each time. In the DS games your stats don't reset, but they rise/fall accordingly. You can eventually max out your stats by constantly digivolving, and by putting them into your "farms" (which is the equivalent of Pokemon's PCs) where they can do individual training and raise certain stats and elements. It's very, very in-depth and also surprisingly simple.

Digimon World Championship plays kinda like Pokemon Ranger, where you control everything with the stylus, but the battles themselves are random in the sense that you only control where your team moves. You have to hope that they use the moves you have assigned them. A friend of mine who loved World DS and Dawn/Dusk didn't like Championship at all.

DW1 is pretty fun and captures the actual Digimon gameplay mechanic. With that said you need a guide to see what evolutions you can get, and it can be very glitchy.

I've been watching Adventure and 02 on netflix. It's kinda interesting to see, but the main gist of the dialog in the first season between the dubbed and Japanese versions is not that much different (outside of some weird censorship here and there).

With that said, Apocalymon's dubbed speech in the second-to-last episode of season 1 compared to the Japanese version is absolutely hilarious given how super serious the latter version was here.
In the Japanese version, he's going on a full on depressive rant. In the english version, he throws his hands in the air screaming "WHY DO YOU GET THE PIZZA WHILE I GET THE CRUST?!?!" There is no fucking way that this was unintentional.

I'm still in the first half of Season 02 and I have concluded that Season 02 fucking sucks no matter what language it's in. And damn, I'm not even at the really bad stuff yet.

Edit: Holy shit,
the Dark Ocean/Undersea Master stuff wasn't a dubbing thing, but was a legitimate dropped plot point? This fucking show.

How are the new season sets? I saw Frontier was being released soon. I was thinking about picking them up since the first two seasons dropped to around $35 on Amazon recently.

Does nobody at Saban know how to sound mix? The music kept blaring over the dialogue and it was hard to hear anything.
Maybe I'm just so used to dubs actually keeping the original music that hearing completely replaced soundtracks is bothersome.

Already not really liking Digimon fusion. Part of why I didn't care as much about Frontier is how they basically got rid of the mega>ultimate>champion>rookie rankings.

Wow, that's rather...

You do know that levels are pointless in Digimon anyway? That's why this series throws that thing away.

Apparently it's the same "saban music" used before. Which is weird.

Just something I found out recently. Animated kids shows (like Digimon) sound so much better in German than in English. I don't know why, but the German voices sound more dignified. That's funny, because I try to avoid the German language as much as possible when it comes to games or movies. :)

I love the German dubs of Digimon. They did a great job with both the voices and the songs. The English dubs don't even come close! I love that they made German versions of the Japanese songs. Wish the Swedish dubbers for once could put in that kind of effort in a series...

Just feels weird seeing mammothmon be so badass in the first few seasons and then see a bunch of them combine and go out like pussies in the first episode. The first episode also felt more like Power Rangers than Digimon.

They're cannon fodder. Do not compare them to old series since they're not connected.

Also maybe it's Saban editing. If anything it feels more like the first few episodes of Dragon Ball.

"Leb deinen Traum denn er wird wahr..." (all the feels). :)

tbqh it seems like only the US dub did weird shit in their shows in the 90's-early 2000's, and even now.

Jesus, does Derek Stephen Prince have the worst range out of any voice actor ever? How many times has he used that exact same voice on this show? One line out of his mouth and I was like Oh god, here's demidevimon/veemon/impmon/ken again

EDIT: Found my post

I was a huge fan of DW1-3 growing up, and I had to hunt high and fucking low for weeks to get my hands on DW4.

Even back then, after playing for just a few minutes I knew it was terrible. My soul was crushed.

I remember MagnaAngemon being OP and beating Mega Digimon in first 2 seasons, so I'd agree that rankings are mostly useless outside of videogames.

Not really. They're also pointless in older seasons.

I remember MagnaAngemon being OP and beating Mega Digimon in first 2 seasons, so I'd agree that rankings are mostly useless outside of videogames.

Besides the Angel-type digimon in season 1 & 2 who hurt Nightmare Soldier type harder, and early Tamers hero rookie-level digimon defeating a champion (with card boosts or the fact they can actually absorb defeated digimon to become stronger), the digimon quickly learn their place. They would certainly get spanked if they tried to defeat a higher level by the end of the show.

That's the whole reason why the hero digimon had to evolve to mega-level in season 1-3, because no amount of willpower would make an ultimate-level defeat an antagonistic mega-level completely. Nope, not going to save the world with just your ultimate-levels here.

You also forgot Savers which pretty much have "levels", but it's pointless anyway since the show runs on hot-bloodedness and self determination (much like Xros Wars).

Really, levels aren't really that important in a show that relies on "friendship and determination" as aspects anyway.

That Masaru punch was ridiculous imo.

Your statement is only half true. "Friendship and determination" is indeed the source and catalyst of their power, but not the spear-point in which they defeat evil digimon as you seem to be claiming.

F&D + Tai + Greymon = Metalgreymon > Network Etemon
F&D + Tai + Metalgreymon = Wargreymon > VenomMyotismon
F&D + Tai + Wargreymon + Metalgarurumon = Omnimon > Diaboromon

F&D + Omnimon + Imperialdramon = Imperialdramon PM > Armageddemon

F&D + Takato + Wargrowlmon = Gallantmon > Beelzemon
F&D + Gallantmon + Granni = Crimson Gallantmon > D-Reaper

Every kid hero has had friendship and determination since their digimon were only rookie-level...dont mean they can usually defeat mega-level digimon with their guts alone.

But even then their evolution is powered by friendship and love. It's no more different than Shoutmon going Xros or evolving.

According to Zap2it, Nickelodeon's already dropping Digimon Fusion. The viewership figures have been pretty awful so far, but wow.

Ratings:
Episode 1: 1.152 million
Episode 2: 859,000

I watch Nick (well mostly Nicktoons) a lot and there's been 0 commercials for it since the first episode to the point I've forgotten about it the last 2 weeks.

Have you seen Power Rangers MegaForce commercials?

Not recently. The commercial with it and Digimon Fusion hasn't been on since. On Nicktoons the only recent Power Rangers commercials I've seen are a tribute to the red ranger by airing episodes from much older seasons in a week or two.

Hmm, how does that compare to ads for their other shows?

I liked the second season :( though I was very annoyed at the Dark Ocean plot point being dropped. It looked like it could have gone somewhere :(. oh well.

I'd love a new Digimon game for Adventure Zero Two similar to the PSP Digimon Adventure game. That was fun (though I never completed it properly, that last dungeon boss is hard if you haven't grinded while you still had all 8 chosen.

Also I didn't know we had a Digimon thread here. :D

edit: also on the point of Digimon World 1. imo it's still a good game even now. I've been able to go back to it and play/completed it several times in the last few years.

Saw this thread. I'm still reeling on the fact that they haven't dropped digimon 1-3 on the PSN.

I remember accidentally deleting my 54 hour digimon 1 save file...and then deleting my digimon 2 save file for some stupid game...can't remember...but it was a jrpg for sure...

Unsurprisingly Digimon Fusion is moving to Nicktoons which I'm honestly shocked it didn't start at. They've been airing the first and now second season of Digimon here for a few months.
