Not even close to true. Garage Rock and Post-Punk are coming back in a big way.
It's 2014, grouping genres in specific groups like these is irrelevant because they're are so many sub-genres and overlaps. And even if this wasn't true, what metric could you based this on? Unless you've listened to every album in that genre in every decade, you're really just looking at trends. And really that could be marked down as a criticism of modern day media and hype more than the quality of the music itself.
Ranking music by decade always struck me as baseless pop-culture nostalgia than music criticism. Judging a piece of a media on it's time period alone is a vapid criticism, let alone the entirety of music in that decade.
What's wrong with modern indie? It's certainly the most successful it's ever been, with Arcade Fire, the Decemberists, and Vampire Weekend topping the charts with their albums.
Arcade Fire and Decemberists just make me feel embarrassed for them. Joke bands at this point (not to say you should feel ashmed for listening to them, just that I find it to be a struggle). VW is pretty good, but hardly saviors.
Can't really comment on Post Punk. I will say that some of the bands in that area making a name for themselves today (Savages, Beastmilk, Merchandise etc) really do nothing for me, but I never got into the genre to begin with. I tend to listen to more straight Punk Rock and into the metal spectrum from there.
Yeah ranking music by decade is pointless, but so is this thread.

again opinion
hate that i have to clarify that after every post
If you don't mind me asking, how are they embarrassing? Is it just because they're too "quirky" for you?
Where the hell is R.E.M. AKA probably one of the most influential and greatest American rock bands in the last...30 years?
SMH at the lack of respect those guys get on the internet when people talk about great 80d/90s rock albums.

Yeah, I agree, but I'm not sure what Servbot finds "embarrassing" about them? I don't like them that much, but to say indie music is shit is ridiculous.
Arcade Fire aren't even quirky. they just play the blandest, safest shit that's derivative of way better music and are hailed as saviors of rock music.
It's because they're so absurdly earnest, image-centric and self-absorbed, to such an overwrought degree that it makes me cringe. On top of that they're both extremely bland and predictable. They both have good songs once in a while though.
Today's music is very much oriented to generate income. Forget about artistic risk in music. If is not going to generate rapid buzz is shit.
Today's artists are merely puppets of their music labels, self centered in vanal and vulgar ways to live.
where are the true musicians? Where are the true composers?

Subversive and experimental music is probably more visible now than it's ever been.
I hate to see what you think of video games when the end goal of development is nothing more than something to generate income
It is more visible because there are more tools people can use to mainstreaming it. What you don't see here is true musicians are hardly supported by labels.
What are the requirements to be an artist now?
- Zero knowledge in music theory
- Zero knowledge in musical instruments
- Zero knowledge in audio and recording
- Been handsome or pretty
- Naked yourself in front of other people
- Knowledge on dancing in suggestive ways
- Love money to fill your empty life
- being a slut it idiot would work
Profit...

I don't know, I think it's pretty reasonable to say that today's mainstream music ( music that you hear on top 40 radio stations) is pretty terrible with a few gems that pop up now and then. I know I'm constantly changing channels because I can't find anything that I like.
How funny. He fits a lot of them. He's a semi-artist then!

basically, the same things that made popular acts thirty years ago. ok.
No he doesn't. He makes decent music for an especific niche, but he's not "trascendent" his lack of global stardom is proof of that. He's not a "genius", he's just one of the very few talended people in his genre, which is filled to the top with filler. And yet he makes better music than any "real musician" ever has.

What amazes me about people like FauX is how he just creates his own version of history in order to satisfy his crap argument. As if pop music is something that was only created over the last 5 years, and has killed the very essence of music! What happened to those true legends like the Bee Gees, Miami Sound Machine, and Smash Mouth? That was the true golden age of music!
Stupid.

I like lots of music because I can appreciate it for what it is. Some songs have great lyrics, some songs have a good sound to them, some songs are just dumb fun, and some songs are the total package (I would put Michael Jackson and Queen songs in this category). There is even lots of music I don't like, but I'm not so full of myself that I have to criticize entire generations of artists and throw nonsense arguments around to show how musically superior I am.HAHAHAHAHA

Oh, I see, you're just some troll.
I wasn't being serious when I posted the list that offended you. I'm serious telling you music nowadays is centered in money. You should go to sleep.
But you are so full of yourself criticizing my "dumb" opinion? Who feel superior here?
If you don't like my opinion just close the thread. I wasn't being serious when I posted the list that offended you. I'm serious telling you music nowadays is centered in money. You should go to sleep.
