A+ apology, guy. AV Club's got a round up.

http://www.avclub.com/article/jonah-hill-arguably-most-sincere-celebrity-apology-205384

I said the most hurtful word I could think of at that moment. I didn’t mean this in the sense of the word. I didn’t mean it in a homophobic way. I think that....that doesn’t matter, you know? How you mean things doesn’t matter. Words have weight in meaning. The word I chose was grotesque. No one deserves to say or hear words like that.

In conclusion: paparazzi still scum, Jonah Hill still cool, "faggot" still totally unacceptable.

The overall difference in reaction between when said it and apologized Jonah and when Kobe said it is amazing.

So much this. I remember the kobe thread on this forum. A few people were even justifying calling kobe the n-word because he called a ref that gay slur.

Apologize to the guy you called a name. I don't know if I really think an apology to anyone else is necessary. Explanation? Sure. But I don't think I really feel like I need to be apologized to in this case.

Either way, well-said. Whether necessary or not, this was a pretty solid explanation that I think most of us could relate to given our use of one hateful word or another at some point in our lives.

We're only 4 posts in and you're already bringing race into this as if someone had brought it up in those previous 4 posts.

That's amazing.

I mean the internet in general, though I don't expect anyone to bring up white culture in this thread like how the Kobe thread became a discussion on black culture by page 2.

Because Kobe's wasn't an apology? Jonah Hill said he's sorry and that h e didn't mean it but that doesn't make it ok, Kobe said he didn't mean it so that makes it ok.

Not sure if you've noticed, but racial double standards for the same behaviors are a long-standing tradition around here.

Easiest way to keep them from getting brought up is not to have them

There was another thread about this that went two pages and was closed for some reason, and he's right the difference was totally night and day and people were actually wondering why the OP was offended.

The word faggot is offensive now? It just means asshole, which everyone uses.

It doesn't target any specific people or have any other directed use, so why is it considered more offensive?

That word doesn't mean gay person to me. Though I still don't use it in public obviously because it can be quite offensive.

Johan Hill said:
But what I ask if that you’re at home—if you’re watching this and you’re a young person especially—if someone says something that hurts you or angers you, use me an example of what not to do. And don’t respond with hatred or anger, because you’re just adding more ugliness to the world. Again. I’m so sorry.

Thats how you fucking own up. Make your moment of ugliness a teachable moment.

Also, the comments on that site were mesmerizing.

Fed up of celebs using these words and doing these bad things and then thinking some PR line made up by their team is enough, by all means do and say what the fuck you want but don't further insult people by acting genuinely sorry.

Becoming a daily occurrence.

Obviously it's offensive. Wtf?

I’m upset, because, from the day I was born—and publicly—I’ve been a gay rights activist…

Idek "suck my dick faggot" could just slip of a supposed born gay right activist, but apology accepted I guess. At least he understands that intent doesn't really matter.

what if he is genuinely sorry? I don't know if he is (he seems like it really effected him ) but the dude is a celebrity everything he does is online and on the news.

I agree its unacceptable but its not unforgivable.

Are you both eight years old? This makes sense for kids, who learn the slur as "idiot" before learning what it really refers to (see: The Louis CK bit), but at some point the real meaning should make itself obvious...

I remember saying this shit as a high school student around my bros and making the same distinction, I cannot fathom being an adult, working with gay men and women and still making that distinction. Well constructed apology, though.

Any footage on the pappo it was aimed at?

What sheltered world do you live in where it was never offensive?

The real question is, when it gets to the point that the majority of people learned it primarily as "idiot", which meaning will be the "real" one.

Pretty good apology I'd say.

That said, the world really needs to cool down on getting all fucking nuts when someone says a "bad" word. Instead how about people take a look at the context and then decide whether to get up in arms. When you are pissed you often tend to sling the first shitty insult that pops up in your head, even if it's not something you generally use in your vocabulary.

That's a good apology and it sounded like he genuinenly meant it.

Er... it is still very much an offensive slur targeted at gay people.

I understand that American society does have racial double standards at times. I just don't see why it (or the Kobe situation) needed to be brought up when the discussion should be as to why Jonah Hill used the "F" word to being with and how sincere he is with the apology.

Jonah has always struck me to be a cool, laid back dude so this is somewhat surprising to me that he would use it despite almost universal agreement that papparazzi are douchebags.

We've never not been at that point. That's why its so difficult to weed out- it spreads before most kids are aware of the issues w/ using it. It's also why it's so dumb to jump all over angry celebrities like Kobe/Baldwin for using it in a heated moment.

I don't think I can really blame any celebrity for anything they do to a paparazzi, short of literally abducting them and torturing or killing them.

I don't think the average person can even begin to fathom how truly fucking aggravating it would be to have these useless fuckers following you around everywhere harassing you. So I genuinely never would judge somebody who takes a swing at one or says some nasty shit to them. A person can do or say all kinds of bad things when they're that heated.

Classy apology from Jonah Hill though. That's what really matters IMO.

I find it hard relating the insults like 'gay' and 'faggot' to homosexual people.

I have to admit growing up in the playground the word 'gay' was a standard put down amongst us kids. But it was just another word amongst an range of other silly words, idiot, moron, twat, wanker etc etc.

Growing up and realising the implication of using that word in an insult I've made an active effort to stop using it. But still, hearing it doesn't make me think 'oh that person is implicating that other person is a homosexual and hence not as good as us'. I think of it as just another word to put someone down with no real meaning.

It sucks but sometimes we have to look at who is using that word in what context, and not just at the words. Jonah Hill is not some closet homophobe using his power to degrade their rights. He was in a heavily agitated situation and resorted to an instinctual vocabulary of insults.

The fact he has to apologise and explain himself is ridiculous and a kick in the face to all the hard work and good he's already done for their cause. It's as if we are constantly suspicious of everyone and constantly looking for a reason to doubt them.

Being British and of a certain age, I'm still struck by how oddly random -at least in terms of the culture I was brought up in- the term is.

To me, it always was a sort of food, and as an alternative I kinda picked up on the "bundle of sticks" American usage at some point... but either way its relevance to gay folks has always seemed kinda left-field to me.

Where are you from and how old are you?

See I'm pretty sure it's a derogatory term for gay people most of the time. It's why I don't use it.

Yeah, you can't be that ignorant/sheltered.

Edit:
Oops, meant to be an edit of my previous post. Apologies.
