Destiny Alpha Gameplay Leaks [Update: Luke from Bungie comments, read post 1557]

I like what I see, gameplay looks fun and tight, graphics look good and the menus are glorious. World switching reminds me of Warframe a bit and so does the upgrade system where you change your armor expect in Destiny you can do it on the fly. Add in a 1st person perspective and remove the parkouring of Warframe and I think we just made Destiny. (I'm joking this is the most simple way to describe the game though)

Why is he using so much ADS? It seems Destiny's combat doesn't force it on the player.

Peter Dinklage sounds like he phoned this one in.

Or he made a character choice you don't like. He's an AI relegated to a tiny ball and is called upon to light things up and apparently teleport things back to the city. It's almost a take on HAL if he hated his job, I actually like it. My opinion of course but making judgements on the actor and not the acting are nothing but assumptions and what happens when we assume? Forum fights.

Destiny has to be the only game I've experienced in my lifetime where I've watched so many trailers, gameplay videos, demos, etc. and I still have no fucking clue what the game actually is. Single player? Multi player? Is it an MMO? Can I play it by myself? Open world? Lots of other players also in the same world? Is it instanced? What are all those weekly challenges?

Those screenshots of the menu a weeks back took what I thought I knew about the game and threw it out the window.

The mind boggling thing about it all is that Activision is spending SO much money on it, and if it fails its going to be because they've failed to tell the consumer what exactly they're spending their $60 on.

I love Bungie and their Halo games were amazing and I want to love this game too, but they're making it really hard.

You're living in the past. People need to stop looking at it from a last gen perspective. Singleplayer multiplayer MMO are all terms that we used to define certain experiences but when you blend elements from all 3 you get something very different.

Don't try to categorize Destiny.

From what I've seen, I totally think it's fair to say the things being said about this game in an alpha state. I don't see the issue. it might not be "fair", but let's be honest, whether it's fair or not shouldn't really affect public opinion, should it?

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Because I don't think it's fair to criticize the game for having bad AI, based on seeing alpha footage of fodder enemies in low level zones.

I don't think it's fair to say the game as a whole looks generic "because ADS".

I don't think it's fair to assume that all enemy encounter will feel boring based on how a single random person is playing the game in a unpolished state, agains't low tier enemies. I mean it's not an uncommon phenomenon that we get footage from an upcoming game, and because of how the person playing, is playing, the game will look boring/dumb.

I stand corrected.

seriously!? Didn't the X360 have custom soundtracks etc.

Yep, seriously. Even some of the COD's don't allow the music to be turned off.

I like music in some games (sometimes), but I almost always turn it off as I'd rather hear the sound effects of weapons and the environment without music drowning it out.

And yes, you could play and pause a song to stop the music but it screwed up the audio in cutscenes.

Ew, what an annoying playstyle. He's using ADS literally all the time (even when the enemies are like 3 feet away) Almost painful to watch. The weapon he is using doesn't help either (it's the equivalent of the AR, and we all know how fun it is to watch an AR-only player, LOL)

Anyway, boring playstyle aside, I really like what I'm seeing. That sense of exploration... I can't wait to get lost in those worlds.

As a Sony fan last generation, this was my feeling toward every Halo reveal and gameplay presentation. That series looks boring as hell until you get your hands on it. I'm confident the same is true here since it's also Bungie. Some games just don't preview well.

Given how much GAF's massively negative opinion of Watch Dogs had little effect on day one sales, I'm not going to act concerned for the title's longevity.

Well I've tried playing several Halos and didn't like a single one of them. Really have the first one a number of solid tries to get into it. Didn't like it. And I wasn't really commenting on sales expectations, so i don't see how your WD comment is relevant. Maybe Destiny will sell loads, but I don't think I'll like it. And my desktop wallpaper is a huge Destiny wallpaper, hell even my start button is customized to say "D E S T I N Y", so I was well hyped when this was first announced. But the more I've sen of it, the less I'm interested.

It's not lik3 there will be a beta which we actually get to play... oh wait, there will be. So these criticisms could really wait until then.

Or, since we are on a gaming forum, and even inside the very thread dedicated to discussing this very gameplay footage, any criticism really does belong here.

Par. 1 - Of course not, that's dumb - though the fair criticism to come up is "why the hell is the low level game so boring?"

Par. 2 - That's more crazy talk. When I'm talking criticism, I'm talking about fair points brought up off the gameplay.

Par. 3 - I think it gives a fair indication of what to expect about the game at that level of play. Extrapolating that to the higher level play is a bit much, but if a viewer finds the type of play shown in the video boring, then that's fair enough.

I guess we do kinda agree then. I also agree with the last part.

My argument still stands that I feel like some people seem to judge the footage as if that's what they assume the entire game will be like. Which is just silly imo.

It's in
Russia
.

Dude is playing solo in a game designed for co-op play and he also seems content to just sit back and pew pew. The game is also alpha. Not the best showcase. I'll reserve judgment

It's amazing how similar it is to Borderlands.
One aspect I'm really liking with Destiny here is that it doesn't seemingly drown you in loot. In Borderlands I just stopped caring because each damn kill drops a handful of colorful stuff.
The A.I in Destiny seems much more sophisticated and the very Halo-like gameplay is clearly the center of attention.

No, the campaign is designed to be completely playable solo if you want. Co-op, as far as we know, it mainly for dungeon/raids and for world events. Maybe the instanced areas adjust to groups also, who knows.

People are going to be so surprised when they play Destiny. Bungie has ill done the game a service to be sure with how they've unveiled it, but man are people missing the meat here. In the first place, Borderlands is extremely popular - so if they think that's an insult, it's hilarious. In the second place, it's not Borderlands. People are going to see the difference in strategic depth extremely quickly. And the A.I., as you know, has always been one of Bungie's stronger points, relative to the rest of the console FPS field.

Well that's the Russia level, isn't it?

Dunno. Been trying to keep myself in the dark about locations. I only know of Venus haha, and now Russia I guess.

I thought Old Russia was the level they showed at the reveal E3 2013? And then again this year with the new footage.

This one I dont get, please explain :P

He's a character from the TV show The Big Bang Theory. He went to space in a Russian shuttle, since NASA shut down its program. Bad joke, but it made him pop in my head when he said it's a Russian shuttle.

Another Episode where games kills games, and the novice experts at neogaf that are quick to label something generic or boring without playing the final game. The same fake outrage for WatchDogs and Infamous and look how that turned out. I don't know how as gamers, we as a collective haven't learned throughout the years to be unbiased observers and watch the state of play progress from production to final product without all the over the top criticism.

looks like a slow paced space rage with less personality and worse gunplay.

rage was not a great game.

While Destiny's story and universe is clearly a shell set up to provide fans with lots of exciting sci-fi action gaming (like most good games!) I still like that it's taking itself seriously unlike Borderlands.

Borderlands, Bulletstorm, Timesplitters, Sunset Overdrive, XIII... They're mostly good games but I don't ever think to myself that these are enjoyable universes.

ADS and the reticle expands when you jump?
Sigh...
ADS doesn't bother me too much, since it seems they are handling it more like Bioshock (mostly optional) and not like COD (forced) But seeing the reticle bloom when you jump really worries me, as I already mentioned back when they released the last gameplay video.

As a Bumper Jumper user in Halo, I love being able to jump and shoot without any kind of accuracy penalties. If Destiny doesn't let me do that, I'll be very disappointed....

Hope they show us a new environment at E3. Old Russia is getting old. How about Europa? Show us more in-depth patrol mode footage, most of the stuff from the Alpha seems to be collectathons.

This is the game Bungie wants us to play for the next 10 years?

It looks kind of boring and uninspired.
