Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

Almost died of boredom in that second half. Uncharted made up for it, but still a very average E3 so far for MS and Sony. Lets see what Nintendo brings.

I thought Sony killed it. Exclusive after exclusive after early access after exclusive content.

The Vita part dragged just a bit in the middle, but otherwise solid with at least 4-5 bombshells.

In order, I'd say Sony, Ubisoft, MS, EA

123

ps: ABZÛ IS LOVE

This is different exactly from Sony how? Forza Horizon 2, Halo Collection, and Sunset Overdrive come out this year

Sony has a remaster (Last Of Us), Racing (Driveclub), and then a goofy game (LBP3)

Then they showed CGI trailers for a bunch of stuff for 2015 and beyond.

The bias seems real here.

Agreed man. I try to be unbiased, as I own both consoles, but there is no way Sony can think they put together a good conference or a good E3 lineup in general.

Adam Boyes was awesome. Thought he handled himself great and it was unfortunate that the conference felt like it fell off a cliff once the other dude took over.

No Man's Sky was definitely the highlight for me. Still blows my mind that this came from such a small dev team.

They should just let Adam Boyes do the whole thing. Everyone else was mediocre to cringe-worthy.

Rundown of both pressers, should be accurate. Bolded are "new" announcements (some were leaked).

Mortal Kombat X - gameplay
The Last of Us remaster
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - trailer

Batman: Arkham Knight - gameplay
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - announcement trailer

----

I think both were basically a wash in terms of game content, Sony just kind of killed their momentum with non-game talk in the middle.

Not to nit pick but if the Master Chief collection is chalked up as an exclusive for xbone, the Last of Us remaster does fit for the PS4

Score for Sony's Conference

10/10

The Last Guardian looked utterly amazing on PS4 and I can't wait to play it.

FFXV - I didn't think they could, but they did it. That was an incredible 30-minute gameplay demonstration that showed off how all the elements in last year's trailer come together. Mind boggling.

And how about QT's KARA PS4 huh? Huh?

Microsoft 6/10
Sony 9/10
EA 1/10
Ubisoft -10 / 10

MS conference was pretty good but besides HALO and forza all their exclusives games are just lame and lack that magic. Still Microsoft made me wanna get xbox cause of HALO.

Sony conference nailed it. Finally given me a reason to buy ps4.

EA: not worth mentioning

Ubisoft: fuck you Ubisoft, for disrespecting Indian culture with the shithole farcry game. I hope the game fails hard.

Microsoft - B+
Nice showing of games, but nothing too surprising.

Sony - B
Matches Microsoft on games, let down by a sluggish middle and presenter monologues.

Ubiosoft - C+
Some nice looking games. A few cringe moments.

EA - D-
They barely had anything new to properly announce. Far off prototype footage and EA sports.

i feel like they didn't really announce THAT many new exclusive? A handful of: LBP, Bloodbourne, Abzu, Grim fandango, and?

Not saying its bad, but maybe I'm alone in wanting more I guess. Exclusive DLC and stuff doesn't really do it for me.

My memory is not serving me right but all those Devolver games on top of the other stuff we saw added up. Unfortunately it went too fast for me to remember. Then there was the Paradox multi game deal. And I purposefully am ignoring bigger games like Bloodbourne or any 1st party games. Let's not discount games because their indies now. Forgetting that even the third party stuff will all likely be better on PS4, the games spoke for themselves with a lot left to show for Gamescom and TGS. I also forget Suda 51's game but I'm not going to list everything.

How does GAF feel about the ridiculous amounts of moneyhatting Sony is now doing? They feel worse than MS now. I cringed everytime they announced a multiplat and just had to mention some exclusive content blah blah blah they had secured.

I'd give the first hour of their press conference an A+ as well as the last 10 minutes or so. The rest? Meh.

So buying an extra 30~ minutes of content is worse than keeping a game off of other systems? This is a joke post, right?

What I wanted, and was given:
  • The Order: 1886 (finally more about the horror side of the game)
  • Uncharted 4
  • Destiny
  • Project Beast - Bloodborne (adored the atmosphere)
  • Infamous DLC
  • TLOU: Remastered release date
  • Project Morpheus

What I didn't expect, and loved:
  • Dead Island 2 (the most surprising thing for me)
  • No Man's Sky
  • Abzu
  • Batman: Arkham Knight (goddam, the city view was amazing!)
  • Powers series free for PS+ subscribers

Things I liked outside of their conference:
  • Resogun DLC
  • Mass Effect 4, and it being multiplatform
  • Tomb Raider sequel

All in all, a very good showing with a big bundle of great games. The middle part with the new guy dragged on for too long though. Surprisingly no sales figures.

omg that was so awful. Tons of sequels, rehashes, and so little new that if it was shown I forgot. And then the TV Bit, and then no TLG or Lightning HD collection. The only game I want is AC Unity this fall. I can't believe I spent $400 on this. Joke's on me

Nice trolling.
Actually, it was the best conference of E3 2014.

So what happened to Sony Bend's new game?

Sony still has a lot of unannounced games in development, I'm guessing they must be 2016 games if they're holding back from this E3.

Sony's games in general match my interests better than MS's anyway. LBP3 is a good thing to have on the PS4, and I do like my third person shooters do they've got me there. And let's not forger about Bloodborne.

IMO, Bloodborne trumped anything MS had, so Sony could afford to cruise the rest of the show.
I didn't really enjoy either conferences though, no big standout moments or big unveils, seemed like they forgot they were at E3 and thought they were at the VGAs.

Any one have a good link to the sony conference? I missed it because I had to work.

It had to be better than MS, all they had was sunset overdrive.

Dude, look at how next gen development is coming along. Increased budgets plus having to learn how to makes games for these machines obviously takes time. New IPs are risky as fuck if they aren't indie games or smaller AAA games published by Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo.

I understand the budget thing but I miss the time where not every new idea didn't come out of a indie studio. Well that's kinda of my point it felt like no one was taking a risk this year.

I think Sony had some weird pacing but as far as games (which is what I really care about) I'd say they had an A conference. A- at the least. Really good showing and announcements even though some parts kind of meh'd me out. Very fun show though!

SCE lost their quirky Japanese roots and it shows

I dunno. The fact that they had Toro giving you the tutorial in the E3 app was a nice surprise.

Why they waited three gens to embrace Toro in the west is beyond me. He could've been their iconic mascot from the very beginning. Instead they completely ignored his existence until he appeared in Toro's Friend Network, SFxTekken, and the E3 app.

Does anybody else think MS took all the interesting AAA multi-plats reveals for themselves, with the exception of Batman and Far Cry 4?
Hmm, in terms of new reveals they each had one GTAV remaster and Tomb Raider. But yeah, Sony had some good stuff, but imo MS had the better multiplat content showcases, Unity, Tomb Raider, Dragon Age and Witcher 3. Not really interested in Far Cry or MKX. Will get Batman and MGS.

No Man's Sky is my game of the show though, just because I love the idea that this little team of indies is making such an awesome game.

And still no suspend/resume.

Last year Sony killed MS. This year the Empire Struck Back.

games they showed were better and more diverse, and less cgi.

entwined, project beast, no man's sky, grim fandangoooo hey hooo, broforce, abzu, magicka 2, the order, a shit ton of other stuff.

ms turned me off with too many shoot shoot bang bang games. it frankly got blergh when battlefield hardlines came on. with sony at least we get lbp3 and other stuff to go with shooters.

the lows were lower but the highs were definitely higher, and there were more highs than lows for sony.

Amazing how Shawn just ruined Sony conference.
Went from WOW....snoozefest...Oh, we are still here? Really, Powers? Oh, UC4? Meh, you already bored us an hour ago.

I couldn't even get excited for UC4 graphic =/
Now if you would have only announced TLG instead...

Shawn Layden is not a charismatic guy.
House presented sales stats at TGS, and it wasn't boring.
He even talked about TVTVTVELECTRONICSTVTVTV, and it was fine.
I hope House will be the figurehead next year...or bring back Kaz.

Agreed. I can't tell if Shawn had a quadruple length speech or if it just felt that way. He's their worst presenter by far and spoke way too much. Hopefully he gets used to the role and improves after he gets a few more presentations under his belt.

Batman would have been amazing for me were it not for the meh looking car combat which doesn't appear to have any sort of challenge or engaging gameplay, so I will instead go with No Man's Sky for favorite of the show.

Sony's was amazing. Uncharted alone made the whole thing worth it.

yes ,An in game snippet can do wonders, I was far more impressed by it then scalebound, phantom dust and crackdown 3 put together (though i was never a fan of cracdown, phantom dust gamplay on ogXbox dont interest me, and scalebound might be good, i'am guessing its a mix between god of war beyonetta and MGS rising,, im sure its not bad but i'am not the biggest fan of platinum games)

The list is a few posts up. Like I said, bloodblourne, No mans sky and abzu got me super hyped. At some point its just a matter of expectations versus reality.

MS left me similarly cold btw.

It's a byproduct of a weak 2014 fall/holiday schedule.

It's not like they are moneyhatting for exclusives, it's just a bump to get over the gap of Stig's fuck up.

I rate conferences by how much they make me excited for the console. The more 'yesss/holyshit/ineedthisgame' moments I have, the better I'd rate it.

Microsoft: B-/ 70%
+ Fantastic pacing. Dance Central and Fantasia? Really dull stuff-- so what do they so? A sharp, short snippet. Cut. Move on. Everyone really should follow MS's direction for these events. (I do miss the hilarious celebrity dancers though.)
+ SO looked great. Like back to form Insomniac great.
+ AC: Unity and Witcher 3? Yes please.
+ Limbo sequel? I'm sold!
+ That presentation with the light bracelets for Ori I think? Beautiful.

- Wasn't interested in Forza Horizon, the new tracks in Forza etc
- Was definitely not interested in Halo or COD. Yay remastered games and more Halo/COD. Yay. (No thanks.)
- CGI, CGI, CGI.
- A rather underwhelming list of games shown imo. If the only one game I was going really crazy for was a multi-plat title (AC: Unity) then I'd say the conference is pretty lacking. (Honestly, I think it's just the genre of games shown that didn't appeal to me. If you're a big Halo/Forza fan then I'd say this conference is for you.)

EA: Watched until The Sims 3 and tuned out.
Judging from the reactions here, it didn't seem to be worth staying up for anyway.

Sony: B+/ 80% (Disclaimer: I unfortunately missed some parts in the beginning.)

+ Loved The Order. Might not be Gaf's kind of game but it definitely got me interested.
+ LBP3!
+ No Man's Sky looks beautiful.
+ Grim Fadango!
+ Creators of Journey!
+ Why hello there Project Beast-- I mean Bloodbourne.
+ Holy shit, Batman! Arkham Knight looked fantastic! This game just continues to impress me!
+ UC4. Sully? Older Nate? Done deal. And that subtitle. A thief's end? Give it to me, Naughty Dog.

- Awful pacing at the middle-ish part there. Just awful. That part with Shawn (?) was so dull. Like 'tapping my feet and looking at my watch and wondering why is this guy still here' dull. And they didn't really need to bring out the Marvel guy at all. Just announce POWERS and mention that it's a collaboration with Marvel comics (?) and move the fuck on.
- Didn't need a montage for TLOU/GTA5 either I feel. They're not just games people have seen. But they're games people have played too. I know, I know. Better graphics/framerates/running on the PS4 but eh, I could have done without it.
- No TLG. No TLG. NO TLG.

And now, I need sleep.

My personal take of the conference:

Destiny trailer - 8 (necessary evil)
White PS4 - 9 (not for me personally but I know others were excited about it)
The Order trailer - 8.5 (graphics were out of this world; could've shown a better gameplay segment though)
Entwined - 9 (pretty psychedelic; available immediately)
Infamous DLC - 8.5 (more content for a great game)
Little Big Planet 3 - 9 (very casual LBP player but the announcement of it shocked me more than anything; looks charming as usual)
Bloodbourne - 10 (dat atmosphere... in my veins... nao)
Far Cry 4 - 7 (not a big fan of the series or FPSs but looks good)
Dead Island 2 - 6 (not a fan of this one either and no gameplay)
Battlefield: Hardline - 7 (more meh for me)
Magicka 2 - 10 (Yes, I always wanted the first one to be consoles, can't wait)
Grim Fandango - 10 (HOLY FUCK)
Montage of indie games - 9
Let It Die - 8 (Believe in Suda; no gameplay though :()
Abzu - 10 (if its anything like Journey... WANT)
No Man's Sky - 9 (10 if its on Morpheus)
Shawn Layden - 0 (WHAT A DRAG)
PS VITA TV - 8 (been wanting this since it came out, look them long enough...)
Mortal Kombat X - 8 (need to know more about this)
Powers TV show - 3 (whatever...)
Ratchet & Clank Movie + Remaster of 1st R&C game - 10 (big announcement for me personally, since I'm a huge R&C fan)
The Last of Us Remaster - 8.5 (Good stuff)
MGSV - 8 (the leak hurt)
GTA V - 9.5 (NICE)
Batman - 10 (WOW)
Uncharted 4 - 9.5 (Short trailer)

I know other people will think very differently but I thought it was a very solid conference except for Layden. #BRINGBACKJACK

Anyone with an ounce of subjectivity would not claim one company destroyed the other company this E3. It was a complete stalemate, in terms of # of games shown and # of exclusives shown. Ultimately it all comes down to which games you prefer, but that is hardly "destroying" the competition.
