Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

I thought it was a pretty good conference. Lots of great games. Uncharted, No Man's Sky, The Order, and Bloodborne all looked fantastic.

I wish they would have took Microsoft's approach of just games, games, games, games though.

VIP codes for gamers who couldn't attend the theater showings.

code gets you, digital gift basket will include a Destiny First Look Alpha Code on June 12, a Battlefield: Hardline Beta Code on June 16, and a $5 PSN Voucher and 30 Day Music Unlimited Trial on June 18.

Claimed the first one and it looks like someone claimed the third one too!

Edit: Where are my manners, thanks very much! Wanted to attend but I thought it'd be better and see GAF's reactions on the small screen.

Different tastes I guess but I thought Sony had a bad conference other than The Order and Uncharted and possibly No Man's Sky (still on fence)

Mostly indies once again it seemed. And do people really want more LBP? I'm pretty burnt out from Ps3 and vita versions. And TLOU remastered isn't something I'd play again.

I'm more interested in the Xbox games this year and PS4 looks strong next year. Just my 2 cents. Didn't see the EA conference but NHL looked great.

I had the most incredible time at the theater event. Loved their presentation. (And three people in the back of the theater were fighting during the Powers segment so I stayed entertained throughout.)

I plan on going again every year from now on if possible. It really made it so special.

Sony's Conference went off to a fantastic start, but was bogged down when Shawn Lynden came on. Not because he was a bad presenter, but the subject matter was pace killing. I am certainly interested in buying a PS4, but there was no megatons that was of earthshattering proportions (Maybe Grim Fandango for the nostalgia factor)

Both Microsoft and Sony had Solid press conferences, in my opinion, none of them really "Won" but that is just my opinion.

The interesting thing will be to see the how the consoles will sell from here on out, overall though rather solid but forgettable press conferences this year.

Yeah MS and Sony really were about the same overall imho but that is not saying they were bad. I expected exactly what they dished out...i believe next year will be much bigger for both of them in terms of exclusives go.

any news on the ps4 firmware/features front?

thought they might have gone into that when shawn layton...but then they wasted a tone of time on powers and random psn statistics.

Everything from MKX to the end impressed...minus that terrible MGSV trailer. Missed the leak, but where is the fun and playful Kojima?

So, honest question. Did they pay more to have a 2 hour conference (it was suppose to be 1.30h right?) or was it okay because they were the last ones?

It started out so great too.

"Ohhh, nostalgia SW music, they're going to lead us into a proper gameplay of Battlefront... dev diaries whut?"

And then it went on and on about 'concepts.'

Urrgh and Criterion's concepts were as about the most pre-Alpha-est I've ever seen.

They didn't even know how to explain it.

"You can fly other vehicles off of other vehicles off of watercliffs and post it on Youtube. By the way did we tell you we love crashes? Here is a video clip of a(n expected) horrible pre-alpha crash."

Mirrors Edge was basically a slap in the face.

So, honest question. Did they pay more to have a 2 hour conference (it was suppose to be 1.30h right?) or was it okay because they were the last ones?

The absolute maximum is 2 hours I believe.

Doesn't exclusive console debut essentially mean exclusive to ps4 due to the parity clause? MS got rid of the loophole in adding extra content to late ports soooo...

I thought Microsoft said the launch parity didn't count if they had exclusive debut contract with Sony.

The reason the earlier conferences are not more flexible is because of Spike TV.

Since Sony would be competing with prime time, they aren't aired on cable, so they don't need to fit in a timeslot.

Hell yeah got back from the Portland showing a bit earlier. It was a TON of fun. The crowd was loud and cheering for the most part too. Had a few instances of videos getting bugged out tho..

I thought it was a great show. Some legit surprises like LBP3, some fantastic looking exclusives like Uncharted (OMG IT LOOKS SO GOOD) and Bloodborne to some really cool third party footage like FarCry3, No Man's Sky and Batman. Very very solid show

Got some beta keys for Destiny and Battlefield. Also got a poster too. Fun evening

MS's parity clause works on a case-by-case basis.

I'd like to see them try to deny games like Transistor and No Man's Sky on their platform. ( actually, I don't. MS, please don't do that.)

Sony dropped some Bombs, Megatons all over my face!

Not as good as last year but pretty good overall, such good stuff to look forward to...

Grim Fandango HD remaster! (Megaton IMO)
Broforce (glad to see its official)
Bloodborne (Glad to see it confirmed, 2015 release is a Megaton)
Little Big Planet 3 (love the new characters, complete surprise)
The Talos Principle (love first person Puzzle games, plus the Dev has a good pedigree)
inFamous SS: First Light (cant F'ing wait)
Diablo 3: UE edition with TLoU monsters (cool content & finally a release date)
Abzu from former TGC devs (journey) (gorgeous, Megaton if their past work is anything to go by)
Let it Die from Suda 51 (oh hell yes, love GM's games)
Uncharted 4 (Beautiful, wasn't expecting it to be shown)

every thing else was interesting.

Nope but I expected maybe a tshirt or something. I mean shit I've seen better swag at a midnight gamestop opening.

Good lord I can't believe you can be dissapointed in free giveaways at a free event. Why do you feel entitled to huge swag? Sony did a cool thing bringing gamers together all over the US and you bitch about 2 free beta access codes and a cheap poster because you get better stuff at a GameStop release you pay $60 for? You honestly should lower your expectations of what people owe you when they put on a free event.

Its like going to free Big Mac day at MacDonald's and throwing a fit saying you should have stayed home when they don't give you free milkshake and fries.

EDIT: You also get a free $5 voucher on PSN.

That conference was pretty weak in terms of Sony games. Was hoping to see some great new IP but it seemed like a rehash of stuff I've seen before. Even with LBP being shown I was hoping they'd at least change it up and do a 3D version with tighter physics. I remember being excited for LBP, KIllzone 2, Uncharted etc. in past years but that conference left me cold.

This is what people seem to forget the most.

3 platforms. If Microsoft actually have to talk about PC. It would have been the same.

Nah man. They didn't mention ps3 or vita. It was awesome ps4 stuff and the middle crap part. Seriously. Summarize all of that into a paragraph, quick announcement of powers, and then in under 1 minute transition to Mortal Kombat and the show would have been much better.

Edit: Put it this way. The time they spent on all the boring stuff should be swapped with time spent on vita. 20 minutes vita, 30 seconds boring, conference 10/10

IMO, the Project Beast leak actually ended up helping Sony in a way, imo.

It was a CGi trailer, but because gameplay already leaked, so we saw glimpses of what to expect out of the game unofficially.

So in the end, Sony's conference ended up having a lot of gameplay showcases.

Just to clarify, Abzu, I think is from the artist who worked on Journey not That Game Company who developed JOurney.

I'll put it this way:

At no point during the MS conference did I have a hard time logging into NeoGaf but it happened a few times during the Sony conference.

Sony really fucked up by talking about that Powers TV show for so long. That really knocked the wind out of that conference's sails. And I can't believe I'm saying this but for the first time in a long time I think I actually enjoyed the MS conference more than Sony's.

Also, fuck Sony for keeping silent on TLOU Remastered release date just to announce the most random date of July 29. What was the point of keeping that a secret? Instead we get fucking Entwined as a surprise day of release. I'm sorry but that really pisses me off.

I gotta say, after this E3 MS and Sony are now neck and neck imo. It's anyone's game. The ONE just needs to start reaching parity with PS4 in the graphics department and MS won't have to worry about a thing.

After seeing the latest footage of Uncharted 4 and the Order 1886 I doubt that will ever happen. It is also going to put some serious heat on third party devs if they don't step their game up PS4 1st party titles will look an entire generation ahead of third party titles.

Prolly during the No Man's Sky showing and Bloodborne showing. Also, the Uncharted 4 showing.

Prior to the annoncement of ID@Xbox. Not that it matters though, I'm sure MS would make an exception for game with as much interest as NMS.

It was after.

Microsoft said:
"In instances where games have signed a timed exclusive with another platform, we'll work with them on a case by case basis. We encourage them to get in touch at id@xbox.com."

I really doubt that, hotline miami, etc. are exclusive.

What?

People hear what they want to hear i guess.

No he really said that when they asked him of his impression right before they cut to the end...

I'll be sure to find a link if they archive it

Edit: Also I paraphrased a bit, but he did say something to the effect of that when asked.

Overall I'm a happy gamer after today. Tons of great games shown today at all the pressers and plenty of reasons to be excited about what is coming in the next coupld years.

Specific to the press conferences, I think both MS and Sony both had good showings. You saw exclusives, some new reveals and plenty of 3rd party stuff. I think an owner of either console should feel excited about what is coming down the pipeline for their respective platforms.

With that said, Sony definitely felt like the market leader out there tonight. You get the sense that they have the momentum and 3rd party support will be rock solid this gen. A solid showing but not a home run (and really...they didn't need one).

MS really needed to hit it out of the park, and for that reason, it's hard not to look at their showing as a bit of a disappointment. While a solid showing, they really needed to bring the exclusives to convince gamers to choose Xbox One over PS4 or to convince current PS4 owners to pick up an Xbox One as a 2nd console. I'm not sure they were successful in that. Plus, all all of the insane preshow hype plays a role in feeling disappointed as well.

TL:DR - Sony had a good showing as a market leader. Showed they are continuing to bring the games, both 1st and 3rd party. MS, while a good showing as well, really didn't do what they needed as a platform that is trailing. I do think current platform holders of both consoles should feel excited after today.

Just watched the conference.

At my count 26 games were shown. Out of those I'm not sure how many appeal to me apart from Grim Fandango, Magika 2, LBP3 and No Mans Sky. I'm not really into the AAA/blockbuster style games so there wasn't much there for me - not enough info on the idies shown (and not enough indies full stop).

Most interesting things announced for me:
* Little Big Planet 3 will let you play the levels created for LBP1 & 2
* GTAV will allow you to transfer your progress to PS4 version (from both PS3 and XBox 360!)
* FarCry 4 invite friends to join you in game without them buying the game - this is an awesome feature
* Ratchet and Clank movie

I think if you're really into AAA games (exclusives + multi-platform titles), you have to be really pleased with the Sony conference. Lot's of gore, Project Beast revealed, Batman looked awesome, Battlefield 1080p, Destiny shoot-bang, Let it Die & MKX gruesomeness, MGSV and GTAV.

Will the Sony conference convince Xbox owners to switch? I dunno, if you are a hardcore Microsoft gamer, then apparently the MS conference hit some high notes with the Halo stuff (I don't and never have seen the appeal of Halo, but it's popular), Sunset Overdrive, Forza etc.

My scores:
I didn't think Ubisofts was that great (6/10)
Sony's was interesting but heavy focus on AAA, but the games themselves had variety and that's why in the past I've always bought a playstation (8/10)
EA oh god (2/10)
Microsoft, no score as I haven't had chance to watch it yet

2 VERY BIG ISSUES WITH THIS CONFERENCE:

1) That Layden chap brought he entire conference to screeching halt. Like what the
FUCK? Then that Power TV series and Vita TV segment, why could that not have been
announced outside the actual conference? Was it filler because their other studios
aren't ready to show their games?

2) Adam Boyes's section was rage inducing because I'm convinced that those
letters weren't indicative of the type of games people have been begging for.
It was completely disingenuous.

Everything else was great.

Solid B+
