E3 2014 | Nintendo Treehouse Live @ E3 [ it's over :( ]

I'm absolutely in love with Nintendo's approach to E3 this year.

They've finally took the Nintendo Direct idea into the correct direction. Guard looks cool too. Giant Robot though... eeesh... that really looked rough. And by rough I mean unbridled crap.

Project Guard doesn't seem as interesting as Giant Robo, but the audience seems to be enjoying Guard.

Both games are tepid reveals after the godly Splatoon.

just because a game uses a certain button doesnt mean that the concept can be marginalized to that button use

I wonder what percentage of game releases in a year use left trigger to aim and right trigger to shoot.

And what percentage of Ubisoft games have you "synchronizing" towers.

I love these games and play them all but I'm glad Nintendo is around to explore new concepts like this, even if they don't work out into retail products.

Can see why these weren't featured in the event. They're very early stage prototypes for game ideas. May find themselves in other games, completely redesigned or scrapped altogether.

Can't help but feel prototype games are not a thing you should be showing in a console's 3rd E3, but it's good to see Miyamoto still working away on new ideas.

Still hope we get a glimpse of Starfox soon though.

Not really feeling any of these games. Miyamoto is the greatest designer of all time but, yeah, gaming has evolved past him and his ideas.

We've been watching game design at large regress for the past couple years, so I find this statement very amusing.

I think we're forgetting the fact that this is still really early footage. They're still just concepts. They're not fully fleshed out, or polished (let alone Nintendo polish).

StarFox is a rough prototype too so maybe you should close your eyes so you don't get scared.

The robot game looked awesome, would definitely buy a fleshed out version on eShop for $10, or buy as a collection of little miniature games.

If they make a NintendoLand 2 these would be PERFECT for it.

Or if they were like Steel Diver: Sub Wars and just nice little eShop games.

People saying these games look like crap and they won't pay full price of them don't seem to grasp the idea of "early conceptual demo" or how Nintendo has made games for the past 30 years.

This.
Sometimes I think some people on Neogaf dont know how games are actually made, if they only asked questions to understand, that would be fine, but they act like my stubborn father when he doesn't understand things and think he know more than the rest.

I love the crowd is actually starting to help with the tower defense game.
I also caught myself trying to do this.
I'm pretty sure that this little game will be a lot of fun with a bunch of friends.

these are prototypes..... gaf sometimes I swear. This is why companys should never release pre-alpha/prototype footage because people get crazy for somereason.

They really shouldn't because this demo did absolutely nothing except put a bad taste in my mouth after their excellent showing earlier.

But regardless of the rough edges, I don't think either of these two titles look fun. At all. They look like a chore to play.

So this is the kind of thing that I don't get about people who complain about Nintendo games - They do try something different, maybe it's not mindblowing but has a fun hook and is unique - it gets dismissed immediately while watch dogs sells 7 million copies.

I don't think people even know what they want or how to evaluate things that don't have explosions or MTV style camera cuts.

People do know what they want. Note that it differs from person to person.

When I see a new game / demonstration, I want:
-To see something close to finished
-Something with obvious gameplay depth that looks fun
-Some visual or audio hook that I enjoy (some decent art or music)
-An indication that there's plenty of content in whatever I'm seeing
-Something original if possible

I don't have a lot of time for half-finished demos that do nothing particularly new.

no it showed that the gamepad actually can be used for new and interesting concepts
Is the starfox prototype supposed to be shown on the stream at some point?

treehouse will be on for 3 days so who knows.

We've been watching game design at large regress for the past couple years, so I find this statement very amusing.

Modern Game Design is imitation of a few key pillars.

Minecraft
DOTA
Candy Crush
GTA/Assassin's Creed
Call of Duty
SPORTS

the vast majority of top selling releases in any year are a variant on one of these titles.

Too many people are forgetting this.
Then if they show an underdevolpped Star Fox, people are going to be angry... because they forgot it's an early project.

I think Starfox is an even earlier prototype then these games. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just Starfox 64 retrofitted with gamepad controls at this point.

Project Guard seems like a great game to play with people who don't usually play games. They both looked pretty fun to me *shrug*
