Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

At a certain point during E3, I got really tired of realistic shooters blending together, the brief bits of colour during the other conferences were high points. This is a lot more interesting just to look at than "drab military squad". The same reason TF2 is timeless.

Yeah, I kept getting a TF2 feeling while watching the gameplay segment yesterday. I'm glad I'm not the only one who made a connection there.

This is awesome:

glad I am not the only one who thinks this has a 90's SEGA vibe,

it just looks like a dream cast/SEGA arcade game.

I really want a Wii-U now.
bet this game ends up being a joy to play and really innovative, but the masses will most likely ignore it as too "kiddie" which would be a shame

Can't believe how well received this game has been. I mean, the art style and general presentation is pretty good and it has some really great mechanics, but it's like Nintendo fans are really really good at welcoming new franchises. If this had been announced at any other conference it definitely wouldn't have had the attention and high expectation Splatoo now has, IMO. Also I would attribute some of that hype to the excellent treatment it had from the Treehouse stream; all matches they showed had excellent commentary and made the game seem really tactical and unique. I'm extremely positive about all this. Gotta hand it to Nintendo and its community for knowing how to receive a game.

Pretty excited to get my hands on this. 2015 is going to be one amazing year for Wii U owners.

I hope Nintendo sees the interest in this game and throws a lot of money behind it. It could be a breakout hit.

I remember hearing in one of the streams Reggie saying he wants it to be to action shooters to what Mario Kart is to... karts. So hopefully they will put lots of marketing budget behind it :)

It wouldnt have been announced at any other conference I think is the real point.

My 6yr old daughter saw me watching this on the treehouse stream and asked it we could go to the shop and get it, she was a little disappointed to learn it wasn't out for a while, but she's still working her way through Mario Kart 8 and determined to get the last 7 stars she needs on Super Mario 3d world,
To unlock the final bowser level in the rainbow level

Good to see a new spin on the genre.

If it was any other company, it would have been limited to a 10 second mention in a reel of games and maybe at most a single demo station. It has more attention because Nintendo were willing to give it the attention it deserves.

Well, they seem to be pushing it pretty hard at E3. Had about 7 minutes of the NDE, shown twice already on the Treehouse stream, first game you see when you go to Nintendo's E3 website, big display on the show floor, etc. They even uploaded a "gamers react after playing the game" video to youtube last night.

Plus it's a game EAD developed and they hardly ever ignore those when it comes time to market it.

God damn I am so excited to see more of this game!
Since it's a 2015 title imagine all the features we could see added between then and now.

- Splitscreen multiplayer 2V2 on smaller maps
- 4 player split screen coop (take your game online)
- Melee weapons
- Character customization's (Clothing / Armor, Weapons, Face, Hair)
- A slew of awesome game modes
- Some kind of challenge mode (possibly coop? :D)

So many possibilities that get me way to hyped!

I wonder if this game is a bit of a result of fresh blood getting in to Nintendo. It sure feels fresh.

'Getting in to Nintendo' maybe not as they were involved with previous games, but stepping-up/being given more responsibilities, maybe, and it seems to be a good move.

I am not sure if I want to buy this game full price, not because it's bad (I am really liking it) but because this kind of games usually bore me after a a few days, on the other hand, I see this game working in some kind of free to play fashion as I've never would have pay for team fortress but after it went free to play I decided to give a try and I even bough like 2 or 3 hats

I think this clearly shows the Nintendo crowd/fans have indeed been shooter hungry.

I'm not shooter hungry. I play a lot of games on PC, I could play almost any shooter I wanted.

I don't because it has been years since I have seen one that genuinely looks fun and original. This might bring be back to the genre.

Totally not waiting for the rule 34 of Splatoon...

Why would you wait? There are pages of the stuff already.

Nah i'm not waiting, it's not sarcastic...But seriously they already make it ? God

The internet doesn't joke around.

Back on topic, I'm gonna go back and look up some more gameplay videos, I just can't stop watching.

Sadly, yes. The first R34 started appearing within 20 minutes of the game being announced.

Treehouse said that they would be showing more of the game off today, can't wait.

Random observation, probably already made:

Just noticed that the posters on the side in the main screenshot in the OP actually state the date of the reveal (In YYMMDD format).

Makes me wonder if the text below it (which ends in a 4) is meant to be parsable.
Noticed that too, no idea what it means.

The game looks really fun. Nintendo had 2 good showings of games this time Xenoblade and Splatoon.

Cpt. Toad demands a word with you, son.

New IP... and it's a SHOOTER. Did not expect this... very, very cool concept! A day one for me.

That said... i secretly wish they replaced the "squid kids" with characters from the Mario universe. Would have loved to see Mario, Toad and the gang go up against Bowser and his crew in each level.

I just want to see a CTF type mode for it. The mechanics practically demand it.

Definitely going to be a fun game once it comes out, that much is evident. What I'm curious is how much better, visually, the game will look come release. Nintendo has this great track record of adding that final icing of visual polish over the initial reveal of a game. Just look at MK8.

Within 20 minutes? Be realistic now. That stuff was being uploaded by the end, if not before the end, of the initial reveal.

Do not want, it's time for original characters now.

This isn't true at all, no man's sky, and abzu got plenty of attention at sony's conference.

I'm sure if CTF was added you wouldn't be able to morph if you were holding the enemy flag. Your team would most likely have to support you as you run out in the open.
That being said.....stealth ninja-ing your way into the enemy base as a squid to steal the flag could be insanely awesome!

Nah, the new characters are great. Nintendo needs new things that aren't just offshoots of their current stable of IPs.

You're 100% spot on and i completely agree. I'd just really love that forever dreamed about Mario Paintball game that will never come.

But seriously, this is a great new IP for Nintendo and it looks amazing! They need it and it will do well, i'm sure. Character design (imo) is overall pretty cool but i feel it's nowhere near as strong as their set of iconic characters.
