Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

....wait so why did they pick her?
From what I understand, she's a notable(ish?) PM player, but of course Nintendo's official profile for her isn't going to acknowledge that PM exists.
Perhaps, but the additional rules in Brawl were a bit more constraining.

Look to here (SSBB unity ruleset) to see what I mean.
Oh, no worries. I totally agree with you there. Having a restriction on ledge grabs is ridiculous, and makes me glad to see ledge invincibility refreshing practically gone.

I just realized that newcomer(s) have only been revealed after a multiple of 3 veterans have been, save for the time between Little Mac, Greninja and the E3 characters.

I love how Pac-Man is not just referential of his own series, but that era of arcade gaming in general. I don't even enjoy Pac-Man that much but I can see playing him a lot.

Leave it to Sakurai to make it work. I used to think Pac-Man would have been a lame addition but he nailed it.

Also I saw this on Tumblr and it made me laugh. Nintendo's portrayal of classic characters versus the owners of said characters.

Because he’s one of my favorite characters, I put together a little walkthrough of what Pac-Man’s special moves most likely are.

Standard Special Move - Fruit
bzeWDjO.png

Hold B to cycle through the various fruit Pac-Man collected in his original game, and then release the button to throw the fruit. Like Diddy Kong’s peanuts, fruit can be eaten to recover health.

In the trailer, we see Pac-Man cycle through the fruit in order of their value. It could be surmised that the cherry recovers the least amount of health while the melon recovers the most. The Boss Galaxian is used as a weapon instead of recovering health, obviously, and we don’t know if the bell or key are included.

For reference, here is how much the various items are worth in the original Pac-Man:

Cherry (100 points)
Strawberry (300 points)
Orange (500 points)
Apple (700 points)
Melon (1000 points)
Boss Galaxian (2000 points)
Bell (3000 points)
Key (5000 points)

This is just a prediction, but maybe the cherry recovers 1% health (100 points), the strawberry recovers 3% health (300 points), and so on. That would be a fun little nod.

Side Special Move - Namco Museum
8r9tAG8.png

Perhaps as an homage to the various retro game collections and cameos over the years, a Namco arcade classic appears in the palm of Pac-Man’s hand. Like his neutral B, these also seem to be scrollable. Each object has a unique function reflecting the source material. In the trailer, we see:

Pellet (Pac-Man)
Spaceship (Bosconian)
Pooka (Dig Dug)
Mappy (Mappy)
Andor Genesis (Xevious)

There are likely a few more selections; perhaps the Boss Galaga shown is one of them.

Up Special Move - Trampoline
KLYFYM3.png

Taken from the retro arcade game Mappy, Pac-Man tucks into a ball and bounces off a trampoline. Just like in Mappy, the trampoline breaks on the fourth bounce.

Down Special Move - Fire Hydrant
Osc4vIM.png

The fire hydrant from Pac-Land appears as a special move. Similar to Villager’s tree, I assume pressing down B next to it opens the valve to release water. It can also be struck and sent flying as a projectile.

Final Smash - Power Pellet
jicAbLo.png

Pac-Man eats a Power Pellet and turns into a giant retro version of himself. It is presumed that he can K.O. opponents in this state by “eating” them.

In summary: Pac-Man’s move set is fucking awesome.

Great job! So excited to play as him

Just got back from the Best Buy event, it was awesome. We got to play two matches of Smash Run, and two FFA matches on the Wii U. I only got KO'd once.... unfortunately I also only got one KO.

Only saw the Smash ball once in all 4 matches. I was hoping to see if Zelda has the same FS, but Mega Man got the smash ball

The game is a whole different beast when compared to Melee and Brawl. The videos don't do it justice.

Decided to place Palutena's moves in the custom moveset grid, did it sloppily.

First move shown of each type might be default set:

up: warp
neutral: heavenly light
side: explosive flames or whatever
down: barrier

Project M hasn't been out nearly as long, people are still moving over.
So? It's still pretty close to the biggest Brawl tournament ever in attendance.

Apex 2012: 400 entrants
Apex 2013: 338 entrants (Melee had 336)
Apex 2014: 370 entrants

Those are the three largest Brawl tournaments ever. Brawl's still a thing, though most of those guys are probably hungry for a new game and a good portion, like Zero, probably play more than one Smash game.

I expect the numbers to drop severely after Smash 4 comes out though while Melee and Project M shouldn't really be affected by that.

The one of the left is accurate, the one in the middle is one version there are multiple versions of pac man, and the one one the right is a spin off. The joke failed.

Don't get me wrong, Smash Run is cool and I can't wait to give it a try, but it doesn't demo well at all and we know 99% of it, so I'd really prefer if they started focusing on other stuff.

i get 2 rounds, who should i play as first
Not sure. Greninja maybe? Looks fun, but then so do plenty of them.

Interesting. Can't wait to see how it is.

To both: you mentioned getting two matches, and one of you already got back. Are people not allowed to go back through the line after a couple times? If so, that's probably good for wait time. But I also assumed I'd end up staying until close and playing several matches (depending on how slow the line is). Doesn't work like that I guess?
The one in the middle is the modern main version
Yep. And that design is indeed pretty bad. But it's also a somewhat poorly cropped image taken away from its context, unlike the top picture.

So in the interest of time we had to switch to one match for 3 mins. I played as ZSS with the Wii U Controller and it was weird having the front triggers as grab and the back buttons as shield. My sister was Rosalina and the other two were Little Mac and we played on the Punch Out Boxing Ring. Before that I got to play the 3DS version of Smash Run as Samus. Before playing Smash Run I didn't really have any hype for it but after playing it I'm really hyped.

There was a Nintendo employee there so I talked to her for a bit. Apparently no photography was allowed but I'm sure people will sneak it. I played Four Swords with my friends and two other people while I a waited. So even though it was three minutes I had fun.

You could go to the back of the line if you wanted to at my Best Buy. I had a full day of work, so I'm pretty tired, or else I would have stuck around.

Yeah, Smash Run while cool, is something we've heard a lot about from the direct and repeated at E3, during the invitational, yadda yadda. The solo mode we briefly saw in the direct would be nice to get an in-depth look at.

Are you guessing what each of these are assigned to?

Also, you are missing the straight up beam that she places directly in front of her. Looks like Captain Corridor / Jam Session.

Yeah. Smash Run is a whole lot more fun to play than it is to watch. Trying to scramble to the new objective before your opponents is some nice frantic fun.

EDIT: Fuck the bubbles from OoT, and Cryogonal from Pokemon. They were so annoying.

Ooooh, cool, I like that Pokemon.

Ohhhhh, nice, extra special moves are unlockables you can get in Smash Run.

Yep. I unlocked one for Samus and one for Pit when I played.

P.S. Ask your Nintendo reps if they're having a sale in celebration of Smash Fest. Every 3DS and Wii U game was on sale at my Best Buy.

I think I would have preferred Palutena having a focused moveset instead of being a near completely customizable character. She seems unfocused as a character right now. Doesn't help that her trailer was just a showcase of a bunch of unassociated special moves and doesn't really give a good indication of what she actually plays like. Not feeling her yet.

How are the controls on the 3DS version? Is the circle pad responsive enough for moving the character or does it feel slippery?

Not slippery really but really tight because of how close it is to being that. Movement seemed much more rigid and exact than brawl though. If that makes any sense. I was able to short hop really well with the 3ds buttons though.

I didn't feel like the circle pad was slippery. I would have preferred being able to use the D-pad though.
Yeah, I am hoping there is a way to change the control scheme, because I always play smash using the D-pad ;_;

Nice! That is good to hear, specially the bold part. Thank you.

YES YES YES YES! FINALLY!

But I'm curious which one is more likely to be default. I think it might be more likely to be bland moveset since that's probably why they tossed customization moves there to make her look an interesting character. I'm looking forward to play as her when we get the game!

Pac Man looks great and I am so happy he's in. I have not been able to view the forums much but how has the reaction been? Are the haters still hatting or have they warmed up to him?

Kicking myself right now for not having my 3DS on me. I'm gonna miss so many Street passes, and so much of a time killer in the line.
