Liveblog thread for 3DS new Nintendo IP announcement (Code Name STEAM)

I've changed my mind. After the enemy leak I now think its Rhythm Heaven with the Choir Boy reveal. If not, that is coming to a direct near you in the next few months.

Are we seriously already expecting a new handheld so soon? Didn't the 3DS just come out 3 years ago? Wtf? I'd be pretty upset if they abandon support so soon. The DS lasted like 6 years or so, didn't it?

I completely disagree with this. I think it's more that they wanted all Nintendo press coming out of E3 to be about the Wii U to prove that it is still alive.

Yes, because they should abandon the one part of their business that is actually profitable at the moment.

You people.

Are you serious? I don't think they will announce a new device prior to 2016.

Since Stump already explained it better than I could:

2) The 3DS is in its twilight years, and it's pretty normal for releases to ramp down. Most of Nintendo's major franchises are on the platform, and most of them have hit saturation in terms of number of releases (IE you only get one Mario Kart a platform, only one Animal Crossing, but you can have a couple of Mario games, etc), and they've done a bunch of new IPs. I wouldn't expect some crazy turnaround or something. The 3DS is about the age the GBA was when its successor was announced, and the lifespan of hardware is presumably shrinking rather than growing on the basis of rapid mobile SOC innovation and renewed competition from non-dedicated devices.

Isn't the 3DS selling faster than the DS?

I swear Nintendo said this.
I think it was initially, but DS sales only really skyrocketed when the Lite released. Doubtful the 3DS will ever match that fever pitch. I personally think it was a mistake releasing the XL and 2DS when they did. A Lite style revision would have been a much sounder choice imo.

If a new device gets announced in 2016, I'd consider the 3DS a failure, software wise. With the handheld market status in Japan, I really thought we'd see a lot more AAA third party titles. It's abysmal.

The region locking has't helped. The PAL 3DS is utterly trash.

I think many of us are expecting the next handheld at next year's E3 (2015) with a Fall '15 or Spring 2016 release.

This statement doesnt even make sense - so if they wait till 2018 for a successor you wont consider the 3DS a failure ?

If that's the case, I don't see how this could be remake, since most people understand most of the mechanics. Even with 45 minutes, that's a lot to cover for a game we already know. Whatever that' new can't take up that much time to talk about. Not to mention it would spoil it.

I really don't think it's difficult to fill 15-20 minutes talking about how you're updating a game, and relying on questions (which would include unrelated questions about, say, Zelda Wii U) to fill up some more time. Again, I'm not saying it's Majora's Mask 3DS; I'm just saying that you shouldn't be saying "90 minutes! Ultra-ton! Nintendo is announcing Halo 3DS x Mario x Fire Emblem: The Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Exclusive for 3DS with Amiibo figurines of Wii Fit Trainer x Angry Birds". I went through my own logic in my first post in this thread of what I see the major possibilities being.

I can't even decide which rumor I *want* to be true!

Majora's Mask portable and in 3D!?
But then, I can already play Majora on a few different systems...

Should I really hope for a remaster over a brand new Metroid game?

Watch as we get neither, though.

MY EMOTIONS!

No way in hell they can get Tropical Freeze running on 3DS. If they somehow got it to run, even at 30fps, I wouldn't even be mad, just impressed.

the joke is that tropical freeze already crushed our dreams of metroid once, so why not do it again. :)

my XL was stolen out of my car recently, so, like, there's this strange part of me that's hoping it's NOT metroid because then I'll have to drop $190 all over again just to play one damn game, and man, will that sting.

Less than 2 hours before a new Advance Wars 3DS bros, I can feel it!!

Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, I do think Advance Wars is conspicuously one of the highest profile IPs Nintendo has that isn't on 3DS, and so at first it seems like a good candidate. What I think it has against it is that the series has been in a SHARP downward trajectory in Japan culminating by the second DS game not even being released on DS (they offered it as a Club Nintendo reward DSiWare title years later after the 3DS launched). Personally I feel that like Fire Emblem, Nintendo is only likely to pursue Famicom Wars if it can be a globally popular title. Of course my skepticism here could easily be refuted: This is all the more reason to reboot or relaunch the series with a bold new direction. So all in all I think as far as blind guesses go, this isn't a terrible one.

Any chance Nintendo could surprise use and show several games or should we expect only one big announcement for the 3DS. If I could get new Metroid and Majora's Mask, I'd be a pretty happy camper.

I look forward to Seaman 2, with returning star Leonard Nimoy.

You want a PS2 port?
