Liveblog thread for 3DS new Nintendo IP announcement (Code Name STEAM)

Personally, I don't mind the graphics since the gameplay sounded amazing. Will definitely keep an eye on this.

I think most people are disappointed because the game looks a bit like shovelware from a no-name western developer.

It looks like it belongs in the category of mid tier games:

Heroes of Ruin
Fossil Fighters
Moon

For all the lamenting over the disappearance of mid tier games (not AAA and not indie), here's one.
Hopefully it finds it's audience.

Granted, maybe that's not an accurate takeaway but that's my initial impression based on what I'm seeing.

Mid tier games can be great fun and they need to have their place in this industry.

Humorously, the thing I cared about the least was probably the Lion named Lion :x

I dunno, pal vc version was fine for me. Probably the same framerate as vc OoT.

I don't recally any 8 fps dips and such.

There most definitely is, namely in the dark area of Woodfall Temple, the Stone Tower giant battle, throughout the main area of Snowhead Temple.

And the PAL framerate in the VC version was still 18fps max.

Source: tested through a capture card and fraps a while back.

On a related note this is something you can't do in the DS, so I laugh at the comments saying otherwise.

They should have released art assets with the screenshots. Days of Ruin had a distinctive style that was immediately recognizable. STEAM not so much for now.

A HAHA HAHA. AHAHAHa.

Wait what does vc lion mean? Virtual Console? Or was that supposed to be Jack Cerby but you spelled Kirby wrong.

I was following this on v and the reactions to that and to the over-the-top American attack were hilarious.

Although I didn't laugh out loud until a screenshot showed a Lion launcher attack,
presumably from that lion named Lion

edit: yup, VC = Valkyria Chronicles

This game might bomb hard. There's just too much happening. I don't even know how to categorize it. On the other hand, if they pull off the gameplay it could also be their greatest achievement. Or just a cult classic among gaffers like Vanquish and God Hand. I hope it is the third one.

I can't wait to see this tomorrow (hopefully on the Treehouse stream). I'm glad Nintendo revealed a new IP even though Metroid or MM would have been cool too. Sounds like this game is gonna be a bit of a genre mash up, going from the tweets.

It became a real thing and not an idea in people's heads.

Saying a game has ugly aesthetics isn't disowning it or giving up on it. Your post comes off as bit passive aggressive, and directed towards people who aren't fond of the games art style.

Can't speak for everyone, but I will be tuning in tomorrow to see how the game plays. Hopefully I it looks fun. I can like the way it plays, but not how it looks, ok?

OK so I did my research on VC and I think Nintendo should have stuck with doing it in an Anime art style instead of copying the silver age of comics. I have a bit if a bad taste in my eyes, its the same feeling I used to get when I see American artists try to pass off their art or cartoons as Anime when it is so obviously not Japanese anime.or authentic.it looks.rather pathetic. Not STEAM just the attempt.

...but the artstyle here is distinctly American in style. They're not passing it as anime.

I think what happened is that they think "anime style" should be part of the VC package for some odd reason.

Good point. I still think their artists could have done a better job. Or they could have hired somebody else like the guys who do those DC comics cartoon like Batman TAS etc

I called this about 15 pages ago that people were hyping themselves up for something the 3DS wouldn't be able to do visually... The game doesn't look that bad, it looks like an average 3ds title.

It looks like shit, when it could look like E.X. Troopers....

:(

Sounds fun, so that is somewhat redeeming

Loved reading the creators of the game describing some of their thinking process when designing this game! It seems like a new IP for strategy game players who game on the 3DS but at the same time, can be considered by other 3DS owners too who want to give it a try. Will keep it in mind.

Ack, I was so hyped for the announcement until I heard it was a new IP. Then I became skeptical. And now, after learning about the game and seeing screenshots, I am completely uninterested. I'm generally not a fan of SRPGs anyway. This game just doesn't look or sound like it's for me.

Also, seeing Intelligent Systems reminds me of how much I want another Paper Mario title. :(

Nintendo really can't win. Accused of never ending sequels to the same franchises, then complained at for doing something new.

Hoo boy!

Nahhhh, my hype was indeed deflated because it wasn't MM 3DS, but I like Nintendo trying new IPs. I was skeptical because I didn't know what to expect. And unfortunately, this game doesn't look like my sort of game. But I'm all for new IPs. Look at Splatoon from yesterday, I think it looks both creative and fun, and since it's reveal, it's started to grow on me as something I'm interested in trying.

Well I'm sure you're used to the feeling of not liking a good chunk of Intelligent Systems output if you're not into strategy games.

Just focus on all the other Nintendo games & let Valkyria Chronicles & strategy fans have some fun.

Hmm, maybe, my favorite games by Intelligent Systems are their Paper Mario and WarioWare titles. I've been interested in the Fire Emblem series but just can't get into the strategical elements it has.

Strangely though, I love the Devil Survivor games, even though they'd be considered SRPG.

New IPs are often hit and miss, if one appeals to you, great! If it doesn't, another one will come along. So yeah, though this game doesn't appeal to me (and it would have been awesome to have MM3DS announced during this year's E3), it's good to see Nintendo creating new IPs of various genres that appeal to different fans out there. Plus, MM3DS feels inevitable anyways, so I'm sure it'll be announced someday :)

People don't complain it's something new, people complain cause the design is just... eeeeew. To stay polite.
I mean, seriously, why does it have to look so bad and generic ?
