Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

I am so hyped for this game it isn't even funny. What I played I absolutely loved. I keep seeing all the hysteria about movement options and all I can think of is that what ever Sakurai intends for the game people will undoubtedly find new advanced techniques. Once we actually get the game and people can actually breath I bet many things will be discovered and people will come around.

I tried to Koopa hop with Bowser, I couldn't. Despite that being a character specific advanced technique to keep constant jumps going for aerials I can only assume I will find new ways to keep up his momentum. But with such limited time even for us who were at E3, we just don't have the environment to test such extensive possibilities. Old techniques may be gone but others will certainly be found.

Mega Man's still an icon in the gaming world, even if his popularity doesn't extend past that. He's got no mainstream appeal and he's sold less than all the others, but he's at least recognizable to older fans.

Nothing really compares to Pac-Man as he appears on the arcade cabinet though. That's basically the very definition of video games to a ton of people.

This so much; it's nice to have the old and familiar stuff, but it's the new things that make a game truly unique.

When asked if it's directly related to Smash 4, he responded "Maybe...! :)"

He also just posted that it's "gonna be soooo awesome" but that it got delayed...

Maybe Sakurai is tweaking For Glory to include Battlefield or other stages.

Maybe you can select different physics or older versions of characters.

Maybe it's the custom moveset stuff from the roundtable and he didn't know it already came out.

Guys, really sad to say this but the announcement I planned to reveal during this AMA can't be done now. HOWEVER, this is incredibly exciting and awesome for the scene. I hope that this goes well and that I can announce it later on.
So now it sounds like it was delayed indefinitely?

64 mode,Melee mode and Brawl Mode select?

hmm.....you know that would be cool. But probably too much work to pull off.

Whatever it is, it means Nintendo is continuing to talk with pro players. This cooperation between Nintendo and it's fans is really building my hype!

I've not been paying too much attention here, but what are people's thoughts on the off-stage game? Considering edgehoging is gone, the upwardish knockback most attacks send you, the huge Brawl-esque ledge grab range, and Brawl airdodges being present, off-stage interaction (aside from chasing high in the air) seems to largely not exist?

EDIT:

This answered some of my questions. Interesting.

It was in the super video post a couple of pages back, but I randomly caught it. Apparently Toon Link's Boomerang Moves faster and Hits Hard the more times you land a hit and catch it, but your opponent can grab it out of the air like an item. If you miss with the boomerang it'll also fall to the ground if it loses momentum and they can pick it up.

That's not Toon Link's boomerang, that's the boomerang item from Mario 3D World.

tl;dr: it isn't fair to totally denigrate Brawl at the expense of Melee. They're different games with their own strengths and weaknesses. Some of the changes that weakened Brawl's competitive potential strengthened other types of play - item play, for one.

Yes, exactly. While Brawl is definitely an inferior game to Melee, it still made a lot of improvements over its predecessor, a fact the makers of Project M recognized. Sakurai didn't just set out to nerf Melee, he wanted to open up new gameplay options, and fix a lot of the things that turned off new players (the barrier to entry to even start playing Melee is the highest in the series, a significant downgrade from Smash 64). Yes, he overcorrected, but that doesn't mean he's a bad developer.

I'm not a supporter of any of these characters I'll be mentioning but Waluigi, and Bowser Jr. were wanted over Rosalina, yet she got in. After being added as a staple to the Mario series as well. It feels wrong that these other two characters were skipped over entirely and I truly feel sorry for their fans. Sakurai has created personas before and I think despite Waluigi not appearing in any main titles, the fans have really given life and character to Waluigi that Sakurai could use, hell he fucked Luigi up in Brawl personality wise so what's wrong here?

So your contention is that more people wanted Waluigi or Bowser Jr as playable characters than wanted Rosalina? If by 'people' you mean 'vocal minorities on the internet', you could just say that.

Where is Bomberman at in this pic?
I really should stop hurting my own feelings. :(

I'm not sure I'm ready to make that assertion. The way the changes to the edge game were discussed on the Treehouse stream, they were made with the competitive gamer/metagame in mind. I think it is something new that will have to be properly explored and discussed before we can say anything like "edge game is dead".

The boomerang is originally from SMB3 used by the Boomerang Bros. The first time it was a useable powerup was in Super Mario Bros Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 eReader.

After that it was a powerup in 3D Land and then 3D World.

Is there hope for a Wii U or 3DS release of SMBA4:SMB3 with all eReader extras? We never got that feature in germany...

Todays PotD is awesome and its just missing Snake, since the match is limited to 4 players and they couldn't show him
right guys????
.

Add Chocobo or a retro FF/DQ character for a Square Enix rep and you have most of the big japanese companies represented :)

Also, Prog and Zero got me really curious now.

From what it sounded like you could only steal the edge if you got above the opponent, and only if you weren't in a "helpless" state.

Sounds like in every case I can think of if you're at a higher altitude than the stage you have a much better chance than if you were knocked at a lower altitude than the stage, and the player on the stage has the advantage still in both cases. Contrast to Brawl where the person clinging to the edge was the one that had the advantage due to how poorly i-frames worked.

Pic of the day. This is quite a line-up of characters for the gaming world. I mean, it's amazing enough that Mario can fight Pikachu. I hope you enjoy this truly unique celebration!!
Who would have we would see these characters in one game together? Definitely not my 8 year old self.

Been reading all of this, im getting hype. And how he keeps mentioning that Shiek combo.....Shiek to get her A-game back confirmed?

Yeah this guy seemed to really dive into it. His analysis seems to be really thorough as well. Everyone who is sweating bullets about it being "uncompetitive" need to give it a read.

I mean we know hit stun is back and so far it can't be canceled out of immediately like in Brawl. We know there is no random tripping and many random elements have been removed from characters. Luigi's missile can still go nuts at any given moment though. Combos have been found and sooner or later people will find and create movement options I'm certain of that.

This game is looking and playing fantastic as far as I'm concerned. Though who knows what the final build will be like...
