Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

I can honestly say there is very little, if ANYTHING, that I dislike about this new installment of Smash. I'll admit I didn't care for the reveals of Wii Fit Trainer and Villager, but their movesets have grown on me and although I probably won't use the characters much or at all, I DO respect their what seems like "unique" playstyles and movements. However, there IS one thing that has been sacrilegious since Melee that irks me each time a new Smash come out.....

.......where the FUCK is Bowser's Castle as a STAGE?? His stages are always so awesomely chaotic on Mario Kart games so why not some of that here??

Also is there no competitive smash thread over in the community side where we can talk about smash as well as upcoming events? Or are we supposed to do that in here?

Because it would feel weird to suddenly start talking about say project m ness ATs in here.
This is the general Smash Community thread in a sense that is on Gaming side because the mods are nice (and because we get daily pics).
Thanks for the stream.

Word. A Bowser's Castle is long overdue. And the Bowser's Castle in MK8 is just god-like. Amazing music, visuals, and design.

I have to imagine that was more due to time constraints and being the first public viewing of live gameplay. They tried to fit everything into a tight timeslot. I mean they didn't even do Best of 3 for the Grand Finals.

Yeah I get that they wanted to show a lot of different things (FFA, items, non-items, 1v1, etc.) but I just hope that they don't fall in love with their format. They'll see diminishing returns if they do so. They have to embrace the competitive players if they want to host a competition.

I made a post a long time ago saying the same thing but I dunno, with team dependant colors seemingly gone in favor of outlines I want to think Sakurai would find a way to make it work somehow. I'd be happy if Medusa was her alt too (better matching figure but otherwise wouldn't make as much sense having Palutena's moveset)

Likely placeholders, but from what I heard, it sounded like Mario's, Sonic's, and Pokémon were reused from Brawl.

Yeah, but some characters like Bowser have unique themes. I was wondering if they did the same for Luigi and the like.

Man, Wooly World and Rainbow Curse are getting me really excited for a Kirby or Yoshi stage. Sakurai should reveal that soon.

I'm dying to see the Kirby ones.

I'm hoping someone catches all the victory themes with direct feed sound.

Unfortunately it seems like most of the veterans (sans Bowser) just have their Brawl ones again. I'm hoping they're just a placeholder, although you think they would've composed them by now.

Love the newcomer ones, though. Villager having the original AC title theme is a nice touch.

Dunno if this was posted but one of the Nintendo representatives said that the game is only compatible with the Gamepad, Pro Controller and Gamecube controller

BTW who else from SmashGAF got the medal?

Luigi uses the same theme as Mario. The only unique ones I heard were Bowser (metal version of Mario's) and Rosalina (Galaxy) -- the rest seem to be shared (Toon Link uses Link's theme, for example).

Well... I won a t-shirt. For me, that's something. I take it you got a medal for winning on the big screen.

I always felt Brawl was super comfortable with the nunchuck (minus the unreliable taunting), but there's no beating the Gamecube controller. Sad to see it go if true, regardless.

Damn, nice haul. How early did you show up to get your loot?
All 3 days from start to end, but I wasn't 100% dedicated to play Smash, actually I stopped taking shirt at 20....

Yup! I played with Kyle Bosman on the big screen :P

Maybe he was referring to the demo and not the full game?
Well, the demo was only playable with GameCube controllers, actually the guy that asked about controller support asked if he was sure that no wiimotes or wiimote + nunchucks and he said that those are indeed not supported

How is that remotely a good decision?

It limited the other controller options on the Wii. I know exclusion is bad but yeah... their inclusion affected some stuff in Brawl.

However, maybe the Nintendo rep only meant at E3 they weren't like, programmed in. I dunno. Exclusion sucks, I'll agree with that.

Didn't meant to come off as elitist or whatever.

Edit: And turns out it's not exclusive only to the demo. Huh, interesting.

My buddy almost only plays with wii mote + nunchuck because it's all he had and he'd be crushed if he had to learn another controls scheme

...

To be fair he's the worst in my group of smash playing friends so maybe a GC controller would do him a world of good

Not sure if this was posted yet, but it's the roundtable live reaction to the Pac-Man reveal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlDROoGqfr8

Gives me flashbacks to the old video of Brawls reveal and their reaction, love it

"Oh my god!"

The only sad part about the digital event is that I *KNOW* that the reaction for zelda Wii U would have been just as big as twilight princess in 2004, and it makes me sad that there is no crowd cheering :(

It'd be a bummer if they didn't have the Wii control schemes. I really don't want to spend $100+ on new controllers if I want to do local multiplayer.

It makes more sense money-wise (from Nintendo's standpoint) to have you get the new controllers and currently-hard-to-find-in-good-condition controller that is being re-manufactured than the controllers that everyone and their grandma already have.

It's not really "right", but that was the most practical solution, in addition to not needing to develop for 6 control schemes which no doubt saves dev time and money.

Fighting Games Weekly on NeoGAF is going nuts about how Smash 4 is just going to be Brawl 2 and will be shit competitively. Since you had first hand experience with the game, do you think that's a fair assumption to jump to, or do you think we'll get a good competitive game out of it? SmashGAF calm down, please. It's an alpha. It's in between Melee and Brawl, its still in development. I think it shows promise as is. I think there are a couple of tweaks that could send it through the roof, but its solid.

From Prog's blog. Yeah, I can see where he came from. Sometime people could overreacted.

Good to see that they're cool with Project M.

This coming from someone who's never played it.
Why wouldn't they be? It allows for unmodded Wiis, & it requires a copy of Brawl. They likely see it as "Hey, they still need to buy a copy of Brawl to play P:M anyway, so it's a win-win."

Still, I'm surprised that Nintendo did some extensive research about the Smash scene. Maybe they'll throw some cash into the pot for EVO, either this year for Melee or next year for Smash 4 (let's face it, compeitive Smash is growing faster than Mario with a Mega Mushroom, they're gonna jump at the opportunity for Smash 4 at EVO).

Apparently everyone loves the landing lag now since it punishes those who decide to air dodge. It's not clear as to whether this cooldown is longer than the standard lag experienced when landing in general though.

Honestly if Nintendo partners with Evo, or host their own Smash tournaments though out the year with the winners of various regional tournaments being invited to E3 for a world championship they'd be able to make Smash 4 a bigger competitive game even if it was worse then Brawl in terms of being competitive.

Anyone know what the timeline was for Brawl's late additions (Jigglypuff, Wolf, Toon Link, Sonic)? Like whether those characters were finalized along with the rest of the newcomers but developed late into the game or were they planned and developed after everything else was complete?

Even with DLC (confirmed?), I still want to hold out hope that there's at least 2 late newcomers not part of the Romano leak. Especially Dixie Kong, who's always been a no-brainer.

Brawl's full roster (minus Sonic) was finalized on July 7, 2005, and that includes characters like Toon Link and Wolf. Sakurai said he purposefully had a lot of characters planned from the beginning so he could include as many of them as possible in the time he had.

If the leaks are to be believed, it sounds like Ness and/or Lucas is probably a "late addition" in terms that they were probably planned one or both from the beginning, but with the release getting closer and one or both not being at the level of polish needed for release in the final game they are/were deciding on which to use in the main game and which to halt until the game is finished and work on later for DLC.

Considering we got confirmation from Sakuari that he wasn't sure if the Tanooki leaf would have an attack attached to it or not I wouldn't be surprised if there are still a number of things planned for the final game that aren't in any current build.

So... do we still want landing lag minimized now? I feel like impressions on the mechanical changes are going up and down by the day.
