Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

You can. I do it all the time. I don't recall if it was patched in or anything, but you just drag the cursor using the analog stick to the bottom-right corner when it's showing you Mii Plaza on the TV, switch the screens, and it will put the Wii U menu on the TV.

Or you can press X to switch between screens.

Does doing multiple air dodges increase the landing lag?

I doubt it. GimR did do a video on how many frames of landing lag it is, though (it's on www.youtube.com/videogamebootcamp) and apparently it's like 20 frames. Which is about as much as Marth's Dair non-L-canceled in Melee if I remember correctly which is pretty punishable.

Sounds pretty dickish to be honest.

To be fair, I bet he has been asked that same question in twenty different ways and has probably given enough answers about it that could point to what he thinks of it already. That and he's probably tired of answering that type of question anyway.

But then I guess he should have just said something more polite. On the other hand, we don't know what the tone was lol.

You know what, I've been thinking of gathering together the various bit of data I've found this weekend. I'll try to links up later.

I would appreciate this a lot, actually. I feel like not many people have been doing that kind of research, tbh, and is more going off of how people have been reacting and the "feel" of the game. Hard frame data (or examples) would be helpful.

Any more reports on Chunk Kong as an AT?

I know I saw some other people mentioned him, but I still think they're in cahoots with the original poster since they were all Smashboarders.

Has it been confirmed whether all multi-hit moves end with a move that has a good amount of knockback? That's what it seems like to me from all the footage I've seen. There is also the jabs to finisher which is also what I'm talking about. Seems like they don't want you to be punished for using them. Though Water Shuriken (Greninja's neutral special) having that as well seems weird to me.

Smash 4 is a bit weird with knockback. You see a lot of moves now have a good amount of knockback, yet it is still not enough to kill characters at what is considered high percents (90%+).

I see. Thanks.

EDIT: Seems like you were right about the context in which KDJ said that lol. Seems like a lot of things are just being posted without context.

Air dodge landing lag is separate from the example you gave. Moves like Pikachu's Neutral Air have their own set amount of landing lag frames and this has existed since even Smash 64. What it sounds like people are experiencing is that moves that used to have low landing lag in previous games (like Pikachu's neutral air) now have more landing lag, preventing them from being able to be used low to the ground comfortably and in a fluid way.

That's what players are complaining about and want changed. They would essentially want Pikachu's neutral air (per your example) to have less landing lag, not to the point where it doesn't exist but back to what it was like in Brawl or even Melee would be fine.

I think you understood my earlier explanation but I just wanted to be sure by clarifying it further.

People absolutely want the air dodge landing lag to stay the same, it's moves like Pika's neutral air that people would want to be changed.

And FWIW, I would be careful about what you read on Smashboards in the Smash 4 subforums. There's a lot of newer players in there that are posting and less of the more knowledegable players that could articulate these things. And it's not even just newer players, it's also more casual players who have even less understanding all together. No offense to them, but yeah, don't put too much stock into what some of them say unless you know for sure they would know. Not all of smashboards is filled with members who know the nitty gritty on Smash mechanics.
According to this translation of amsa's feedback, some aerials have no/little landing lag

That's a sign of a combination of a lot of base knockback on moves and possibly stale moves having a strong effect on them (if used more than once). Knockback isn't a single value, it's a combination of base and growth (literally there's two values, most moves in Brawl have 100 growth or so and low to medium base if I remember right when I peeked at the character files some years ago).

Think is the first time anyone has had access to widespread video feedback and detailed posts about game balance before the game is even released?

Not counting the time I got my hands on a uMvC3 disk

So, I figure the demo distributed to the Best Buy (and possibly the one used at the Invitational) was probably not up-to-date...

I'm pretty sure I didn't see any of the "steam mechanic" Sakurai mentioned where characters emit smoke upon being damaged, and I think someone earlier mentioned the characters didn't seem to be mirrored like Sakurai mentioned they would?

On the Sudden Death matches there was steam at the demo I played

That doesn't surprise me at all, however, if more characters have aerial moves that have more landing lag than characters that have aerial moves with less landing lag then that's still a problem. And that's the impression I get from comments people like prog and some of the other Invitational players said.

@Watch Da Birdie: The steam was there in the E3 demo and I saw it in some matches for the BB demo on videgamebootcamp's channel. I should note though that prog said the two demos could have been different anyway because some players have said they could shield to end their run/dash while people who played the E3 demo said that wasn't possible. So dunno, they could be slightly different in some way but not from the lack of steam.

He mentions that samus's missile animation doesn't cancel upon landing. I think that's the case for Link's bombs and boomerang, too. I felt like short hopping and grabbing a bomb or throwing a boomerang was actually WORSE than just grabbing a bomb while/throwing boomerang while standing still on the ground. The only other solution seemed to be jumping WAY up in the air to do it.

Oh? I don't recall seeing it in the Tournament, but maybe I wasn't paying attention enough.

Definitely saw the steam effect during the Treehouse stream when they got a Sudden-Death.

Yeah it must be hard to see because I never noticed it while playing at all :/

For 3DS i'm going to *HAVE* to turn on percent above names if it's a permanent toggle, like this:

I might even do it on Wii U since having your name above your head isn't a thing anymore.

Yeah in general a lot of moves do seem to have more lag, but if there are exceptions then balancing seems to be inconsistent.

I think I might have figured out the 3DS select screen layout. (Even if I haven’t, what I’m left with somehow makes sense.)

Wow, great analysis! It seems perfectly logical, but the only thing disappointing to me (aside from Lucas getting cut...) is that it would mean Sakurai has been showing off a majority--if not all--of the secret characters. There's something more exciting about info "leaking" and having to wait until the game is finally released to be able to confirm anything.

he's the star of the greatest video game ever made shut up

Yes. This x1000. No--this x1,000,000.

Stale moves being that significant would be strange and it didn't seem like they were using the same moves much.

Is it safe to say that moves with high base knockback and knockback scaling before now has a lower value while moves with low base knockback and knockback scaling before now has a great value? Would explain Fox's Up-Smash being nerfed to hell and back.

How are people getting in 14 matches at Best Buy?

I had time for, like, one. After four hours of waiting.

I've heard a lot of horror stories of terrible lines but honestly, there were maybe 50 people at my best buy. and most left after their first play. So I got 6 matches in.

Past few days aside, this is the friendliest Smash community I've come across in years. I'd rather it not turn into that either.
The last forum I was on for most of Brawl's pre-release days has made anything that's gone down in GAF's smash OT's positively pleasant in comparison. I think I've already shown a few people on the IRC what I mean, it could get unbelievably stupid at the best of times (and never for competitive reasons either).

Yes. This x1000. No--this x1,000,000.
How does it mean that? Likely the only secret characters shown are Luigi, Mega Man, Sonic, and Pacman.

honestly not all of it seems bad but there are some that are a little too "passionate" with their wording

Awful moderation, toxic viewpoints, absolute leniency on top players.

And then there was the situation with EVO where they threatened to hold donation money ransom if Smash didn't win to get in EVO.

Some of them are kind of...crazy...it's a pretty toxic community in some parts.
Well that's not good at all.

I like following competitive Smash, but when people on the community still have to make an effort to address advocating proper communication, it just shows how unruly the community as a whole can be... For a demo.

I wish it had caught the beginning of the zelda reveal! Still good, though.

I'm so glad I was at home w/ no one around because i fell out of my chair and started crying!
Same here, man. When he snapped his fingers and revealed Hyrule, I got legit emotional. The art and ideas behind the new Zelda game are exactly what I've wanted for the series.

Was prepping for the Smash Fest tomorrow by playing a couple of Brawl CPU matches and went a round with Lucas.

My Mother bias aside, the character is such a blast to play. There's really nothing like dashing into a crowd with his Up Smash (such havoc!) and I dig the impact of his aerials. And dat PK Thunder. I'd hate to see him cut.

Seriously, look at that face. Would you want him out?

What is wrong with smashboards? I've heard of it a lot but haven't been there.

Professor Beef's post says it all, really. From a personal perspective, it was a really chill, tightly-moderated forum pre-2005 before a popularity spike (stemming from a Nintendo Power interview from the head admin, I believe) gave way to a gigantic, clashy flood of n00bery and elitists. Nowadays, you typically have the latter running around dismissing users for low post counts and toxic conspiracy theorists swearing up and down that Sakurai made Brawl bad on purpose.

also, this is a secret, but the Creative Minds (aka the writing/fanfiction section) was where all the cool kids hung out

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but has anyone noticed any Xenoblade enemies in Smash Run at Best Buy? I have a friend who claims he saw a Verdant Bluchal (http://xenoblade.wikia.com/wiki/Verdant_Bluchal) but I haven't seen any confirmation.

I sort of doubt your friend only because I don't think any normal person actually remembers the names of Xenoblade enemies off hand lol.

But no, this is the first I've heard of it.
