Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

When they first showed the trailer it didn't get much of my attention, but that Treehouse demo definitely got me. I'm really hyped for it. It's really a unique concept and looks so much fun to play with friends. Hope Nintendo delivers with its online. Mario Kart is a good sign for Nintendo Network, so I hope they continue pushing on online games.

The maneuverability is really awesome. We should get maps that maximize how zany it is. The Treehouse vs Devs match were teams were helping others across the map was some pretty cool stuff.

They made the excellent decision to make the female headline the game. Look at all the fan art! The clamoring wouldn't have been the same if the game was just the dudes or front billed by one.

I don't know about that, I feel as the though the internet would have found and focused on her anyway.

I do like they went with a female lead though. But the internet attracts to what it attracts to. Like how when Donkey Kong is in something and you can play as another kong espically diddy everyone pick the other kongs.

Does anyone think that this will get old kinda quickly? I mean it looks really fun, I just don't see it being extremely replayable.

And if this is full priced, hmm.

I'm sure I'm not the first to say this in this ~2000 post thread, but Splatoon is mighty close to a system seller. The WiiU (with Skylander Swap Force bundle and nintendo land) is $198 next week, I might jump in.

I like that it's new characters.

But I wouldn't mind if some Mario characters made a cameo in the game.

I think it'd be neat if there was a small chance (2%-5% chance is what I'm thinking) that you could see Mario cleaning up the ink with FLUDD after a match.

How so? Maybe the single player, but if you're talking about multiplayer, isn't this like every other shooter but with more layers added on? I mean people play Call of Duty Team Death Match like every day for a year until the next one where they play Team Death Match every day for a year until the next one (and the cycle goes on and on). This has a lot more going than that. Not only can you travel left and right or forward and backwards, you can also travel up and down. There will be different paths to take depending on the team that you're fighting and how they're set up. When you engage in a firefight, do you go heads up? Do you retreat? Do you fake a retreat and then circle around and flank? Do you fake a retreat and then just hide in your own ink? At the beginning of the match, do you cover your own base? Do you try to get into enemy territory as fast as possible and pin them down? There's so many tactical decisions that you have to make. None of us are sure exactly how the game will be played, but as it's been presented thus far, the possibilities seem endless.

You're better off with the Deluxe refurb from Nintendo IMO. You get the Digital Deluxe promo and 32 gb of internal memory. Only good things about the Skylander bundle are that you can sell the Skylander figures and that it's white.

No different than any other shooter. I mean as long as it has good netcode and maps it would be the same as any other online shooter.

The game only being what they showed at E3 with the trailer and demo? Yes, it would get old fast. However, since there is well over several months before this game will come out, that is more than enough time to put in more content, such as more game modes, a single player campaign, more maps, customization, and perhaps even a level editor. There is probably already way more to the game than what was shown at E3 with the trailer and demo.

Why can't this be full price? It is a new IP and a full game. All they have shown is one mode of the online multiplayer. They have hinted at single player too. Just like other shooters it will have many online modes and maps.

I have watched the trailer multiple times just for the starting music. Did they actually say this was first half of 2015? I really want this. Probably my most wanted game behind Zelda U.

I'm very excited about this one, and I hope they get useful feedback from the demo. With it still being a year away from release, I think they could polish this into something special, and some tips from American players and devs couldn't hurt.

It really is amazing how nintendo seemed to nail alot of things that are in multplayer shooting games when they have very little experience in this area.

Observing experiencing absorbing and augmenting.

This game does have you constantly shooting, so i guess it get old that way. It would be nice if they introduced a reason not to shoot other than youve already painted an area.

I assume , a long with turf modes there will be other modes.
Hopefully some general slayer type modes

You can't judge value based on a one map e3 demo.

We know next to nothing about features except the main competitive mode.

Would be cool if there was a death match mode where aimmis to kill as many as possible, the trick however being that you get penalised for the amount of ink that lands on the floor/walls meaning you have to be ultra precise.

Man, the amount of game modes we mere mortals are thinking up, just imagine what they are cooking up at Nintendo. Hmmmmmmmm.

Somehow I'm doubting that Nintendo would want to promote a mode that's quite that demanding of its players. Part of what makes the Turf War model "work" is the fact that while it is indeed a competition, there's enough variance in the playstyles that you can be a boon to your squad without necessarily having to directly engage people on such a regular basis. You can stay at "home" and keep the flooring of your base completely coated, defending when necessary, and it will still be a legitimate aid toward your team's victory, and I think it's alternative ways of approaching standard shooter tropes such as this that'll be Nintendo's focus. Splatoon looks really fun, but some of that fun also comes from its accessibility compared to most shooters and I have some question about exactly how intense they'll want to go.

Granted, even with just the one mode they did show, the basic mechanics look strong enough to potentially offer a decent variety, but philosophically I'd be a bit careful about wishlisting things too far in advance, considering what some of their design focus seems to be.

They don't have to market Splatoon with that deathmatch mode idea in mind. The focus shall always be on Turf War, and ad spots might show off a different style of play every now and then to showcase the variety this game offers.

Personally speaking, I hope they have a mode where, instead of custom loadouts, you have to locate weapon and item spawns on the map itself and take advantage of their placement to win, either with a Turf War objective or something closer to traditional FFA.

What you've seen in the E3 demo is Mariokart : Mario Circuit, with red and green shells only.

The trailer already showed other weapons and arenas, and as they hinted several times there will be other game modes.

Not available in Australia :( (unless I looked in the wrong places). Until this sale came along, WiiU's had been woefully overpriced here.

Nah, they've been doing it in recent Mario games.

True, but I believe throwing in big-time challenges like that is easier to handle in a Mario game, which is a singular challenge (or in the case of 3D World, wholly cooperative at least). Splatoon is a different kind of game with different goals.

It makes more sense to approach design ideas for this not from the Mario side of things, but more along the lines of Nintendo's other multiplayer-first properties, the likes of Mario Kart and Smash Bros. They're designed specifically so that even players who aren't as skilled can still enjoy themselves within a match and are given at least a chance to succeed thanks to the game's own design, such as 'Kart's item distribution. Being good at the game obviously still gives you a major advantage, but you aren't completely shut out otherwise. Turf War works as a mode exactly because you don't have to be exact with your aim, and you don't have to be completely skilled in firefights to be successful. A "wasted ink deathmatch" mode which reverses that thinking is definitely an intriguing idea and probably a fun one, but I don't think it meshes with what Nintendo's general philosophy is as it pertains to their bigger mass-appeal multiplayer games.

Most shooters are accessible. That's why it's such a popular choice when making a game

Does anyone know what the "Signal" does? I saw the prompt for it on the screen during some footage but I don't think anyone ever used it.

A wasted ink deathmatch mode seems counter-intuitive. You need to splatter the floor with ink to increase movement options. Your opponent can cover your ink to decrease them. The constantly changing landscape is what makes encounters fun.

I'd say shooters just have a potentially large player base. Give a controller to someone unfamiliar with right-stick aiming and they won't have a good time. Splatoons ink coverage gameplay seems like it would make a noobies role more important while demanding less of them. If they hang back and cover the base they're filling an important role while in a deathmatch shooter they're getting killed over and over and just helping the other team.

There already is a reason. Since your shooting ink at an arc, your shooting is visible to other people esp. around corners. If you're not careful of your ink placement, it lets other players ambush you when they know where you are and you don't know where they are.

Alright so I am watching all the treehouse stuff since I was at work for most of it and im watching splatoon, and this one guy discovered a pretty awesome technique that a treehouse guy instantly dubs the splatter jump, thats some sick advanced stuff right there
