Quick GAF; iPhone 5s or Samsung Galaxy S5

So long story short, last night my old Droid Razr M decided to take a swim in a pool and it seems to be gone for good (put it in rice and all that). I'm still part of a family plan and I have the option of using my dad's upgrade (he's fine with his current phone) for a new one. The two top models seem to be either the 5s or S5 and I'm not sure which one to get. They're both on sale today (which is the last day of the sale apparently) for $100.

I'd just like to get some impressions on the two and decide before the store closes.

Both really good phones. The only question you really have to ask yourself is this: are you going to miss the android ecosystem? Will the apps you bought on the razr M be something you'll miss?

See that's the thing; All I really care about is Facebook, texting, snapchat, the camera, battery life, web browsing and overall responsiveness. I didn't really use my past phone for a lot of apps or music (iPod Classic filled that role). The impression that I'm getting is that the iPhone is a lot lighter, smaller and faster, but the Galaxy has a lot more customization and a much better battery life.

wait till iphone 6?

just get a pager in the meantime

No point in getting an iPhone 5 with the six around the corner

HTC One (m8) or Sony Xperia Z2.
I'm not a big phone guy and these were the best (and fairly cheap) options available at the store. It's between the S5 and 5s only. I'll check again for the HTC and Xperia, but I'm not going to die if I don't have the latest tech (unless I can get them all for the same price, in which case why not.)

They're virtually the same size.

Edit: iPhone 6 4.7'' will be smaller unless it has bigger bezels than the M7.

Are you sure your phone is broken? I dropped my iPhone in a puddle of water last month and put it in a bag of rice for about 48 hours. It seemed to be dead when I first removed it from the bag, but it started working again a day later (although battery life has taken a huge hit since then).

It's been in there for 24 hours now, and I tried turning it on (probably a bad idea) and there was no response. If it never comes back and I end up paying more for a phone while also going even more days without one I'll be a little bit pissed. And even if it does come back, there's no saying it would be in the same condition it was before.

I own a 5s and my advice would be 'get an android that isn't shitty like the Samsung'

Hate the galaxy phones for some reason nexus and htc one are better

If I was paying my own money and had only those two choices I'd take the cheaper one unless you are invested in an ecosystem already

They're both the same, although looking at other stuff the HTC One really seems to be great. I'm going to look again for that or see if I can get it online for the same price. The Samsung looks even worse than my droid for some aspects (battery life is comparable, seems to be a lot bulkier and unnecessary complicated etc.)

It's all down to if you want a big or small screen. S5 water resistance is a nice perk though.
Yeah, it would save me a lot of money getting a waterproof case.

So it seems that the HTC One seems to be $100 always with an upgrade for Verizon? Am I reading that right? Because if so I'll just end up getting that instead. Is that water proof resistant though? Or I guess does it at least have waterproof cases?

What phone do most of the friends you're texting/snapchatting/facebooking have? Get that one.

iPhones (4s and later). But when I switched to Droid I really liked the customization, more responsive typing and slightly larger screen. Heavily, heavily leaning towards the HTC One at this point, assuming it's still $100 with an upgrade.

Had that phone. It is very responsive, the display is amazing, great speakers, sub-par camera. The camera being lower in quality compared to the iphone and galaxy is the reason I returned it. Wish it came with a 8+MP camera. It's the best android phone experience out there IMHO.

Thanks for the impressions, ever had any experience with the Xperia Z2 since a lot of people seem to be mentioning it? It seems harder to hold which is a big negative for me, and places a large focus on the camera which isn't necessarily bad, but there are more important things for me. I'm sure any of those phones' cameras are better than my current camera (which was still acceptable for when I used it) so I think I'd be fine in that department .

They're both nice. I have a GS5 right now and it has some quirks, but Touchwiz has gotten a million times better than it used to be. I'd say go with whatever OS you want, as the hardware on both is great.

Edit: the hate for Samsung's phones I think is a bit undeserved :( all the flagships at this point are great.

I'd go for the iPhone.. Build quality > Samsung from my experience.

Been very tempted to upgrade to a 5s recently but I'm awaiting the announcement of the 6.

Always that s5 / samsung hate lol

I'm biased because I would not get ios over android, but even just comparing the devices I don't think there's anything the 5s is better in?
Better build quality my ass, check drop tests etc and see that they both are the same or the iPhone dies first. And only one of them can handle dust/water...

The S5 is just as good as the other newest flagship androids so no mistake in that regard either.
I really like my S5 even though I would like a Z2 just as much I guess. Though I would miss stuff like the fingerprint scanner.

I have an iPhone 5 now and I wish I had more customization options. If it weren't for the video games on iOS, I would have bought an Android phone. When it's time to upgrade, I highly doubt I'll be staying in the iOS walled garden.

Galaxy S5.. dont go towards an IPhone, they are very closed systems and you can do much with them until you jailbreak it. To be fair i use a HTC ONE M8, i picked that instead of the samsung because it has a much better build quality. I work in a phone shop and trust me when i say Samsungs and IPhones are the most broken handsets people come back into the shop with. With the Samsung its always a battery issue where the battery expands and becomes very dangerous, and the IPhones are just flimsy and break with ease.
