Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

So I heard the screenshots from the press kit are 2560x1440 resolution. Coming from Nintendo, that's pretty crazy. Does the Wii U even capable of doing that resolution?

Ok, so in the Day 2 Demonstration of Splatoon (starts about 9:20), there was some rumor that the Japanese developer said 'DLC' but the Treehouse interpreter didn't translate it.

Actually, what the the Japanese guy says is 'DRC-no-touchscreen' (Lit. 'the DRC's touchscreen'), which he then self-corrects to 'GamePad-no-touchscreen' ('the GamePad's touchscreen'). I can't recall, but I feel like there's been some internal documents or filing where the GamePad has been refereed to as the DRC before, too.

So, while this doesn't mean that Splatoon won't have DLC eventually, it was not mentioned by the Japanese developer and it was not left out (intentionally or unintentionally) by the Treehouse interpreter.

Just thought people might be interested to know. (Maybe this has been clarified already? IDK)

Yeah, many developers call it DRC, because that's what the GamePad is called in the official documentation.

I legitimately think that Nintendo would do well to temporarily pick up some of Sega's music team for this. A Sonic Rush style soundtrack (or at least a few songs) would fit in so well.

I had a dream last night that there were some cute enemies in the field, and if you splattered them, they blew up in the color of your paint, creating like a wider radius of your splatter. And then there was like an alcohol item that erased some of the splatter in a given area (this one doesn't make as much sense but, you know, dreams).

Anyway, I didn't think this game would get the buzz it would be getting, honestly. When I saw it in the Digital Event, I thought it was sort of like a quick downloadable title sort of thing and wasn't too interested. The buzz is really changing my mind, though.

That would actually be a game I might get into. I don't know what happened, but I somehow nearly lost my appetite for competitive games somewhere around the Quake 2 days (this is one of the times I mourn the death of LAN multi player options in today's games).
Only difficulty I would have is, that I am still not comfortable with a controller. I guess 25 years of using mouse and keyboard and nearly no use off a controller does that. I feel very clumsy using the sticks. This shows during the most during shooting parts, like when I try to use a controller, playing Saints Row 4 or Watch Dogs on my PC.
I guess I just need more training using it. So I should make myself a training program up until the re lase of this game. ;)

Other than that I really like what I am seeing and I am really interested what other play modes the will implement. If my training program fails, at least I will have the single player mode to get myself comfortable with the controls..

Funny you had that dream, because that's what happens in the game.

I'd like to see at least one multiplayer level that's "all floor".
But that I mean a sort of spherical room where you can travel freely on the floor, walls and ceiling (kind of like the inside of a Mario Galaxy planetoid) and every surface painted counts toward your final score.

Not sure, but it seems like you can see the opposing team's "INCOMING" signs even when enemies are hiding in ink. Not sure if that's intentional

I have bad news for you... No matter how much training you get, dual sticks for shooters will never even remotely approach mouse and keyboard.

But I am interested in the gyro-augmented controls for this game. Seems like a good step forward for twitch-shooting.

I heard on one of the Treehouse that the loading screen or something has reggae music before the match is about to start. Reggae sounds like a great fit for something like this.

I like the current soundtrack. Something JSR would be totally awesome considering the urban environments of the game.

My understanding is that screenshots that are intended to be used in print media are at a higher resolution. I know the Skyward Sword press kit came with super high-res screenshots and people were calling them bullshots but they're not really meant to be seen at that resolution and won't look as good once they're printed.

Totally a headshot.

Keep this game away from your kids folks.

I heard Wiimote + nunchuk is a nice compromise. Not as good as mouse + kb, but way better than dual analog.

Gyro controls with the Game Pad can simulate to some extent the twitch ability of mouse and keyboard, and nunchuk + Wiimote can be just as useful. Playing with a Pro pad isn't something I'd recommend for most shooters, lol.

I'd rather not have reggae. Frenzied ska and Shibuya-kei, though, that calls to mind a slap-dash state of constant development and '90s blue skies.

In this interview with IGN the devs are asked about voice chat. They explain how their idea of the game is you as an individual looking at the map and deciding where to go based on that information and they will introduce some sort of communication that won't interfere with the existing system.

My guess is they will flesh out the "signal" dpad commands, multiple options like "I need help!" "Not safe, don't warp" etc. It would be a big mistake to only allow minimal communication in such a heavily team based game. At least allow friends to talk with each other.

Good luck with your dual analog training, Shaldome. The gyro controls should help as well. I was thinking how the splatter jump would be difficult to do around corners because you need to take your thumb off the stick to press the jump button but the gyro should solve that issue.

Also if we call it Ink Hopping we could shorten it to iHopping. iHop. ;)

Yeah I saw that video and wondered about voice chat. I think "friends only" wouldn't interfere with their current system. Hopefully that's the worst case scenario.

As for iHop, squid hopping is shortened to shopping. Lazy gamers may prefer 2 syllables over 3 haha.

When they talk about "interfering with the current system" I interpret it as the current system being a player on his own analyzing the map data and making decisions. So even between friends their philosophy would be that making decisions on your own is the way to play. A game lacking voice chat would definitely have a hard time fostering a long lasting community.

Hmm, but shopping doesn't emphasize the hopping aspect of the move. Plus iHop is the international pancake house or whatever. The squids are "flipping" like pancakes! The downside is free advertisement for iHop.

Much like the Wii days, don't they create assets sort of in line with their vision of what their next console may be and then shrink it down to work on their current system?

Or am I dumb.

Edit: By the by, someone that's apparently working on this game liked a picture I shared on Instagram and started following me?

Lol at iHop. I'd use whatever haha. Anyway, I really hope voice chat is in. I interpreted their "current system" being what they currently have in place (restrictive communication; non-universal chat options; "family-friendly" options so parents don't have to worry about their children) but you may be right.

I swear I've played something like Splatoon before. Not the squid or the swimming part but the part where you have to paint the largest territory. Someone help! I want to remember! Maybe it was only a mini-game in a bigger game but I'm sure it was similar.

There are some tps/fps games, mostly from the 6th gen that had cheat codes or modes where the guns were switched to paintball guns.

Thank you fr the input. Seems like I have to experiment a bit and find the controller that will work the best for me. God thing about the game is though, that I don't have get these crazy kills and can contribute in other ways (at least in the shown game mode).

Da blob maybe?

>_> Super Mario Sunshine.

That's what this game is.

and I love it.

Pretty much all of this. The concept is old and not too unique, but it seems Nintendo found a way to market it mostly, not just make something out of it.

Also that old video further proves that last gen HW couldn't run Splatoon as some suggested. In Splatoon the maps are way bigger, the character models are more demanding, the paint is thicker and more real looking and you have the squid dive mechanic, all that in 60fps.
Not bad for the runt console huh?
