Are you even having fun with gaming?

I personally enjoy even the worst episode of the walking dead games or the wolf among us more than the very best episodes of any tv show im watching.

Been doing this for over 30yrs, so yeah, I'd say I'm having fun. I play what I enjoy, whether it's Pac-Man, online CoD, or Super Mario Bros. I'm into the games themselves, not frame rates and resolutions.

Fun in games can be had from different things. I had actual great fun modding Morrowind back in the day, tinkering with different settings and texture packs, and I really enjoyed the gorgeousness of the game when I was done (though I wouldn't if the game itself wasn't sublime). So I don't think having "fun" with games and being excited about graphics are mutually exclusive (and I'm usually in the "graphics don't matter" camp).

I totally see your point, though. I sometimes wonder the same when I hear/read people dismiss games based on graphics only.

The day I stop having fun is the day I drop this hobby. Way too expensive to not have fun. Graphic and technologies are fun to talk about but my main pull toward video games is and hopefully always will be, fun.

My backlog is so large that playing games has become a chore, made only more arduous by the knowledge that it will never be completed.

...

Nah, just kidding. I'm perfectly fine with being a collector.

People here are having a lot of fun with videogames here. But some of them can't accept other people are having fun with other games. Especially games that they consider (oh my god) BAD.

Yeah that can be an issue sometimes, but I find this's is primarily applicable with games that are disliked by the majority so instead of attacking you directly they'll just drown you out or talk around you. Point is, I don't care how unpopular a game is or isn't as long as you are having fun that's what matters. Screw everyone else, you're not playing the game for them.

I have an annoying issue where my setup has to be "perfect" in order to play the games that I want to play.

i.e. -
  • Bought a new mechanical keyboard, was too loud and stopped playing games for a while
  • Bought a new 40" telly for gaming - Was too big and didn't like sitting so far away
  • Room messy, can't concentrate on game
  • Computer chair not ergonomic enough

I remember the student days when I could have piles of cans stacked on my table, sun shining on my monitor, music playing next door and a very very low spec laptop.. and could lose myself in the games I have.

Saying that the last few weeks I've drowned out the "issues" that have been distracting me from gaming, really enjoying playing Tropico 4 and having the world cup games on in the background (adhd brumgb).

I just had a fantastic "short" campaign with King of the Dragon Pass that I completely failed at the end and I had a lot of fun.

That said, there is nothing wrong at enjoying a game at a technical level, is part of the "next-gen" magic, it has been like that since the beginning of videogames. You can enjoy a game at different levels and for more than one single thing.

So yes, I'm having fun.

It's been said by many before but the day I stop enjoying games is the day I give up the most awesome of hobbies!

edit: with regards to the current gen of consoles. Things like Driveclubs implementation of dynamic weather (that affects the gameplay) is the most promising next gen feature for me. It's something I'm gonna expect from nearly all triple A games this gen. I love it when tech like this is not just used to make the game look prettier but make it different everytime I play. Stops fatigue setting in. Also want to see more advanced A.I. in NPC's and better use of realtime destruction - but I digress!

Something I've been thinking about the past few years. I saw this today.

"turbulent weather rolls in, skies thickening before bursting onto the roads. Crowds at the side of the track reach for their macs and umbrellas, winds tug at the trackside scenery while puddles form in the divots and dips of the road surface,"

"The heat from the sun dynamically melts the snow, with northern-facing surfaces reacting first."

and ppl seem to be losing their shit. Then there's No Sky Man game i checked out and ppl are going nuts for it, yet no one really knows how it plays. I was at a side chicks house last weekend and invited my boy over to cotch. He brought his PS4 and was eager to show me games like infamous and killzone. He was taking close ups of walls n shit and showing me excitedly.

But all this shit, at the end of the day just seems like people are playing games (GAF and enthusiasts) to be impressed on a technical/art level than having fun.

Take a step back for a min n really see if you're having fun with the games u play.

The Drive Club thing can really improve the gameplay experience. People don't tend to notice it but when you're racing you are taking in the surroundings using them as landmarks to gauge the track. Having things unique like in DC will be taken in, trees that don't look alike, road markings that stand out, a dirt trail near the track that goes to who knows where, they will all be taken in.

Just watching videos I can imagine how I would notice the track side detail, the far background, and how nice it looks. When I travel to a nice looking area I don't shut it out and just look at the road, I look at it.

I just spent a while looking for a specific Wipeout HD Zone gif but pictures will have to do.

I loved this mode, especially because of the background and it's colors.

With so many MetroidVania games coming out now a days, I havent seen one that is definatively better than Super Metroid or SOTN.

I'm actually having a great time with games lately. Steam sales and indie games has resulted in me actually having fun with games more often than before I build my PC. I buy the occasional AAA title and have fun with them too.

only fun i have is DOTA 2. the only game that gives me that satisfaction. Street Fighter IV did it when it came out, now its dota 2. anything else is just boring, but yet again, i am almost 30, so could be that.

I'm having some of the most fun ever!

In the past month I've put together my dream IIDX setup - Tricoro with a new DJ Dao FP7 controller. It somehow feels even better than in the arcade.

Vita is amazing, I always have something fun to play on that.

Dark Souls 2 is kicking my ass, but I love it.

I'm also trying to decide between playing through X-COM, Witcher 1 & 2, or starting a second playthrough of Mass Effect 2.

I have fun for a few hours normally and then I want to move onto another game or check out some game i just read about on GAF. I think I have gaming ADD. In fact, I operate this way with almost all forms of entertainment media (books, movies, games).

OP, I can see where you're coming from, but racing is one genre where that crazy attention to realistic detail can actually make a difference.

In general, I don't have tons of time to play these days but I have been having fun.

I enjoyed Knack and I loved Lego Marvel. Currently, I'm having a blast with The Show.

I stopped being interested in playing videogames last year at some point. I do not understand why people are excited about anything new that has come out other than being so invested in the gamer culture that you have to convince yourself that having a ps4 is fun and exciting right now.

I'll probably recant this statement when Uncharted comes out.

Lately (since PS4/XBOne released), the hobby has lost something for me.

Perhaps it is the nature of the industry, whereby games are becoming more temporary services than long-lasting product... but, currently indie games have captured my main interest - despite not being able to bloody play most of them! (owning an old Macbook as my sole personal computer) :-/

playing saints row 4 now

The mission variety sucks

The visuals are merely okay

The city mostly feels empty

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT

I am having the time of my life playing a game where I get to pretend I am this guy

There are certain games that you can just tell have TLC going into them. That's what excites me. Most of them are indie games, but they are games nonetheless, so that's exciting.

Hyper Light Drifter, Shovel Knight, Mighty No. 9, Smash Bros.. Games like these.

34 here, and have no problem finding really good games to play. So nope. :)

No, i'm not. but i try to.

I have a xbone and a ps4 and a ps3. watchdogs, forza 5, dead rising 3, GTA5, etc. none of these games I can seem to enjoy. ow well, maybe it's just for a little while.

I still have fun. Some games do feel like a chore to get to the good parts more then they used to though.

What can be fun to me varies greatly. As well as good Arcadey experiences I also consider playing Dark Souls fun, also I could see myself finding one of those so called "walking simulators" fun. What I can enjoy is very open.

That said it does frustrate me when game coverage is so heavily weighted towards the techical side and the plot and little mention of what its like to play is made. I'm over being impressed by the graphical tech, I think I have been for about a decade now. I'm not saying every game should look like it can play on a NES, only that I feel we've come far enough now that you can do whatever a director wants, better textures, effects and resolution are only minor improvements to the base game.

Art direction trumps all with graphics anyway, some PS2 games still look beautiful to me even though they are low res by modern standards.

Watch Dogs = No Fun For Me. Just seems tedious and like I am going through the motions. The one chance it did have at fun, the Digital Trip, I was never able to successfully pass, as I had no idea what completing it actually required as if the game did tell me, it did an awful job doing so.

However Mario Kart 8, Wolfenstein, and most recently the Dead Rising 3 DLC Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX Plus Alpha means I do still have fun, yes.

When playing a game feels like a chore, I'm usually done with it. Fun is a requirement. I tend to play a single game at a time so I go weeks enjoying a game till I'm done then move on to the next one. Current fun ones for me include the infamous games, NBA2K, Dragon's Dogma, Demons Souls and GT5. I just enjoy playing them for the hell of it.

I'm with you. If I have to start reaching for a guide because I can't be arsed to figure out a puzzle, I'm usually done. I don't have endless time anymore with a job and a wife and baby, so I prefer to spend it on the best experiences.

Most of the time, except when I'm playing dota. I realized that I wasn't having that much fun anymore and tried to stop playing it, but then I think about some cool build I want to try and start playing again. :(

It ebbs and flows for me. Especially early in a gen when there aren't a ton if games out and I end up playing more genres rather than sticking to things I know I have fun with.

I don't care much about graphics etc though. I'm not terribly interested in No Man's Sky as I don't know how it plays as so far it looks like just exploration with some space shooting mixed in. That could be fine if there's enough narrative and objectives to give it all a purpose. But not something that I'd have fun with lacking that.

Games are fun because of the suspension of belief in many cases. "It can't look that good, no way," and then you're proven wrong and it feels great.

Being immersed in a game is it's own sort of fun... I mean, a horror game like Silent Hill. It's for that particular thrill or sensation.

I think fun is subjective, so to each your own.

I hope I'm not the only one who did a double take at the "side chick" line, ha.

OT: yes OP, I've noticed this among enthusiast gamers, who get caught up in technical stuff. We could be in a thread about how sick the Bloodborne gameplay looks, or how Scalebound will ideally play, but there's always "what's the resolution/framerate?!" I really feel for developers, who just want to make a fun game, but are subjected to this pressure by the crowd that should understand them the best.

It really reminds of hardcore anime "fans", that feel the need to have an unrealistically large backlog, and a MAL account with over 300 shows, just to swing their e-peen anime knowledge around.

Why do enthusiasts in these game/cartoon media lose sight of the original point?

"Fun" should never be the objective of a gaming (or any other) experience. "Engagement" should be the objective.
Wow... That sounds unbelievably sad.

Edit: Obviously some genres benefit from top of the line tech than others (e.g. Racers), but this blanket treatment of all games need to have the best tech possible or it's a failure, is dumb.

If I feel like I'm not having fun with gaming I find a switch in genre's may be needed.

Currently having a lot of "fun" with my Wii U. Currently been playing MK8 and Rayman Legends. I've already been thinking about what to play after Rayman Legends and will probably go with a different type of experience. Maybe an RPG or Survivor Horror on my PS3.

Edit: After thinking about it more, I think I switch before I get to the point where it's no longer fun. I can't remember getting the feelings a lot of posters mention where gaming feels like a chore. I guess if I feel a certain game, or genre isn't exciting me then switching genre's keeps it fresh.

Yep. I tend to sell a game quite quickly if it disappointed me. I can't see why you'd even be playing games if you weren't having fun. It's not compulsory.

But all this shit, at the end of the day just seems like people are playing games (GAF and enthusiasts) to be impressed on a technical/art level than having fun.
Not gonna lie, that is definitely how it feels like at times w/ some folks. I just don't understand it really. I mean, I can understand to a degree, but it's grating how most of the time the conversation just jumps on hyping or shitting on a game if it does or doesn't look realistic enough.

Kinda like with what's going on w/ the hype on GTA5 remaster (for PS4) right now, or the Master Chief Collection, or Last of Us remaster. Yes, great games with prettier versions, but still fundamentally the same game. Where's the new/improved game mechanics and AI logic taking advantage of those visuals?

Eh, I do tend to be much harsher w/ "realism"-based games than more abstract/cartoon looking ones, but that's partly b/c they age much quicker visually (the irony).

"Fun" should never be the objective of a gaming (or any other) experience. "Engagement" should be the objective.
What's the point of being engaged if you're bored to tears? In fact, how can you even be engaged if you aren't having fun? Me thinks you should've picked a different word there, like "immersion" maybe.

Tho your opinion's still flimsy.

Same here. Running from cops is just no fun to me, especially with the awful driving in the game.

Sold it off and back to some PS3 and Vita gaming until the Destiny beta. Started up Deus Ex: Human Revolution and am enjoying that so far, and chipping away at P4G.

I am with many games. Just had a ton of fun finally beating Infamous 2, and got sad yesterday when I had to stop playing The Secret World cause I was having a lot of fun.
