That texture doesn't make sense.

Uhm, well yes it does. The shadow of the grate is only visible when dust is in the room. Before the balloon explodes there is no shadow.

Yeah he tries to fulton the POW inside a house, the balloon explodes, dust everywhere.

Damn, that's a lovely effect. I haven't played any of the Metal Gears since the original on PS1. But the PP hype is really getting to me, every trailer has been brilliant and all the gameplay has looked phenomenal. Will likely get into the rest of the series during backlog summer so that I can catch up in time for this game's release.

well this is an international site. that's just typical lazy thought process by the general population. like how people call items by certain brand names instead of what it actually is.

and there are a bunch of different accents inside the US. if someone from Boston talked to a guy from Georgia would either of them deny the differences in their dialect?

"No accent" never refers to someone with a southern or bostonian accent. They are known differentiators. Same with Californian surfer dude accent and the like. A "no accent" would be someone who talks like the majority of the population. It's just a culture thing.

edit: no argument that it's lazy though :p

This game looks to be incredibly replayable. Can't wait to play around in this. I'm really interested to see how this world is layed out though. Can I just wonder around the world freely if i wanted to? Is it entirely populated with enemies and civillians too?

Not sure if there's any civillians, what you see there is a town that's been taken over by troops, I wouldn't be surprised if it's all similar in that way. It's not all set in one place so there's multiple different maps but the details aren't known yet.
The gameplay seems to revolve around choosing a mission from your helicopter, then arriving, carrying out your objectives and leaving again, it won't feel similar to gta in terms of going to meet some guy to start a mission but you should be able to explore each map freely unless they put some artificial boundaries in for each mission.

HOLY SHIT! Day 1!

They should have some asynchronous MP where people can invade your motherbase and depending on your defenses, they can either get what they've come for (intel, equipment, NPCs via fulton, etc.), they can just destroy parts of it or the entire thing, they can take over your entire base, or they can die.

Or it could be a gamemode where two people can go against one another's bases and whoever finishes the objectives first wins, or something.

It'll be like infiltrating the Plant from MGS2 except it's always different. And special characters like Ocelot will have their special abilities and fighting styles. They can be seen as bosses/mini-bosses.

And maybe even let people know when they're being invaded once the person is caught and the base is on alert or caution, then let the owner of the base play as one of the NPCs with that NPCs own skills and perks, and maybe allow them to switch from NPC to NPC while you try to kill the person/people who are infiltrating your base. Also allow players to give orders to their NPC characters on where, how and when to attack.

The possibilities are endless! This is the Metal Gear game we deserve! But I shouldn't put my hopes too high.

I have numerous times, exactly how did you make it through last gen? Because 30 FPS all the way through was just fine and it certainly beats having objects and shadows pop in 5 meters just before you while horse riding. Yeah I'm gonna stick with the "slideshow" for now.

Nope, 60FPS, IMO, is a perfectly fine tradeoff for pop-in. Ground Zeroes felt incredibly slick and smooth, in no small part due to the locked high framerate.

Base raid!

He did mention something about your actions in-game and online. They haven't shown specifics yet but we may get something similar to that in MGO.

Thinking about it, fultoning that AA gun or that S-stat soldier that you just got an hour ago could get annoying. Heh.

Based on that, it would look more like this. Without the one being cast.

I sorta, could understand that, but it's still odd.

Depends on the position of the sun and the angle of the window, no?

All we know for now is that other players can attack your mother base and steal your stuff, i bet this will be a big part in the new Metal Gear Online.

I hope we can opt out of the multiplayer invasion thingy. It's cool for something like Dark Souls, but Metal Gear? I'd rather have it as part of Metal Gear Online and separate from the main story.

Play MGS3 and Peace Walker, since those explain Naked Snake's history and everything you mentioned.

So, only MGS3 and Peace walker is needed before you can play TPP?

Everytime I tried to get into MGS series (like peace walker on PSP back then), everyone has been saying "you need to play the previous metal gear games". Is just too much for me to play every metal gear...

the games aren't even that long though.

No it's just there's only a few smoke sprites, if you watch when it happens there's another one in the bottom right corner of the screen. Each cloud of smoke is just a 2d square facing the camera, and it's tested for sun shadows as if it was a thin sheet of paper, so in some cases you can get an effect like that.

One thing they can consider is changing Snake's animation as he gets closer to a guard like in Chaos Theory.

iVYnIwC2W3Jzg.gif

That was a nice detail any stealth game could implement. If you watch the hospital GDC gameplay and heard Kojima's comments about Last of Us, you can tell contextual animation is a higher priority.

Well, Snake has two crouch-walking animations. The regular one and the one where you don't make any noise (when tilting the joystick very lightly). YOU get to choose whether you want to just run and get rid of the guy quickly, or go full stealth. The game lets you decide and it's perfect that way. Besides if you're about to be seen by another guy, having the choice / freedom to hide form them quickly would be hindered by any "contextual pre-stealth kill animation".
Being in full control of your character is crucial in a stealth game.

Just look at the new cover-system. Half of the time, BB magnets to the wall when you don't even want him to. It's not that annoying, but can sometimes turn a safe stealth approach into a stressful situation where the challenge is to not be glued to the wall instead of not being seen by the guard. MGS PW / 4 had a button push that I didn't like that much, but it worked. IMO, the first 3 MGS did it right.

Calling it right now: A sniper battle with Quiet on the vast, expansive Afghan landscape. Aesthetically, it will surpass the boss fight with The End. Count on it.

As much as I love mgs this video kind of put me off a bit, I dunno it kind of feels like there's some Ubi levels of homogenization going on with the gameplay/forts. I'm just hoping the enemy bases have more variety cause that looked very bland to me in terms of layout and complexity. Kind of reminded me of Far Cry 3 in that way, seen one, seen em all. Please don't feel like a grindy open worlder...

The balloons... why? At least don't make it an option during daylight raids...
I would almost prefer a NOLF vanishing perfume over a huge, obvious to everyone balloon

I'm pretty sure you get to design your own Mother Base, so their should be a healthy variety of buildings and paint jobs to place.

People have been calling that for a year :p

I hope this game has real boss fights in it. PW "bosses" were all boring as fuck

How do you feel about flaming ghost whales?

It won't be a series of robots again, I promise you. But might not be flaming ghost whales either.

Is the health regenerative? I noticed "bloody screen", but no health bar...

I am also not a fan of reflex mode. Every game that is a shooter seems to do this, and it just cheapens the exhilaration of thinking on your feet when caught.

Also not a fan of marking enemy players, because it seems they are marked permanently, which may make things too easy.

I'll try to avoid doing all that. I did notice that at the end screen, there seemed to be a score for using reflex mode, which I assume will reward players who do not rely on it?

I think you misunderstand, the Chaos Theory animation in that gif is only cosmetic. You can 'cancel' out of it and aim/melee attack when you want to. Chaos Theory also had what you described with regards to having analog control over your movement speed. What you're describing I think (and correct me if I'm wrong) is an animation that locks you into grabbing an enemy and prevents you from doing something else. What I'm pointing at is how Sam Fisher changes his animation slightly as he creeps towards a guard. At first his hands are too his side, but as the proximity lessens he moves his arm to his knife. That kind of thing is great and doesn't affect gameplay at all. I'm not talking about when he actually grabs the guard, that's just part of the gif.

Holy crap. Finally saw the video and it reminds me A LOT of Far Cry 2. The abilities Snake has also seem way beyond most third person action games right now. Overall, I just love how dynamic this game looks, even if it looks like it isn't too difficult on normal mode.

I can understand the fears of "Assassin's Creed syndrome" where the game doesn't offer any real resistance to the player. Maybe they should adjust the cost/benefit factor of using Fulton. For it to be balanced the artillery thing should feel very expensive. I also notice Mother Base here seems like Assassin's Creed II's home base system taken to the extreme. What I like better about MB though is that you get a tangible benefit to the stuff you acquire. You can actually use the guns and vehicles you capture. In PW you could actually plays as the soldiers you grabbed, while I don't know how you'll use them in TPP. Also, if it's anything like PW, the game's economy probably won't be as lopsided as it usually is in AC. I don't know, I just feel like Metal Gear usually has more care put into its systems.

Edit: Ground Zeroes already confirms you can turn off reflex mode and even the enemy sight indicator. You even get extra points for not using Reflex.

Yes, it's like in most games these days where the bloody screen disappears after a while. Eventually (I don't know the exact metrics) you will be prompted to heal and Snake will spray some healing thing on him to recover.

I am also not a fan of reflex mode. Every game that is a shooter seems to do this, and it just cheapens the exhilaration of thinking on your feet when caught.

I dislike both of those things too but luckily they can be disabled AND you get extra points for disabling them.

It won't be a series of robots again, I promise you. But might not be flaming ghost whales either.

Humans with ridiculous powers/skills like Foxhound, Dead Cell, and the Cobra unit would be perfect.

Giant whale would be okay if it was just a part of a Psycho Mantis fight like one of his "attacks" or something.

It's burning film, not blood. Yes it regenerates.

you can turn reflex off

You don't have to mark enemies

No fun allowed. Don't use them if they bother you. Call a helicopter and do it ground zeros style.

MGS has always been ridiculous, but the balloons in the middle of daylight should be easily spotted by your opponent

Also, when Snake is flying away, why does the chopper arrive from the direction of the base and fly back over the base on his return to the rig...

I understand MGS has earned some liberties, but that's just thoughtless design...

I think you know what I was getting at. Wasn't trying to be insulting to the rest of the world nor was I being lazy. I simply didn't think about it being international at that moment and certainly didn't intentionally ignore that fact. His voice in MGS 1 didn't seem like a logical progression of the voice in MGS 3 due to age. I think that Troy Baker sounds like a more realistic progression of the MGS 3 young Ocelot voice. My opinion.

Using Fulton in plain sight against enemies seems a bit too "gamey" considering how serious the games' story undertones really are...

Yes it is a bit wacky, but that is exactly what MGS has been for quite some time.

The humorous tidbits mixed in with the serious, heavy "world is going to end" plotline help lighten the atmosphere in certain spots so the game doesn't take itself too seriously and remains fun.

A few previous examples of wackiness:

-Adult magazines used to distract guards (MGS1)
-The infamous naked Raiden section of him cupping his balls while doing cartwheels (MGS2)
-Cameos of Kojima (Peace Walker)/Raiden (MGS3) that help lighten the mood
-Random cutscenes shot in humorous/awkward fashion

There's other examples throughout the series as well.

I always found it hilarious that the victims/escapees made noises when shooting off into the air.

This type of humor allows the series to breath a little especially when 90% of the rest of the game is in ultra serious "world's going to end" mode.

I absolutely love the fact that fulton is back and fultoning animals is going to be hilarious fun.
