The blood splatter effect on the corner takedown is a nice touch. It's a powerful move.

Overpowered, even. 3 guards taken out like nothin'. Maybe they add a cooldown timer or somethin'. Or at least have the move make more noise?
edit: For further context, the player was not spotted a single time in this gif.

Just R2 when near the corner. A prompt will come up. In the youtube video the gif is from, the guy just turned off his HUD. No analog stick action IIRC.

Or another solution is to have a guard throw smoke/flash grenade once they realize you are hiding behind cover. The move itself is realistic, but the guard A.I. (walking straight into it every time) is not very realistic. Could also have the guards wait for backup and ambush Snake all at once or from different angles.

Nice to see them making the Fulton system make more sense this time around. I know i'll definitely be using the box now that they're more options. I remember in Peace Walker you could fulton people inside buildings. Very curious to see the multiplayer and how it affects the base being a HUGE fan of MGO.

I think you misunderstand, the Chaos Theory animation in that gif is only cosmetic. You can 'cancel' out of it and aim/melee attack when you want to. Chaos Theory also had what you described with regards to having analog control over your movement speed. What you're describing I think (and correct me if I'm wrong) is an animation that locks you into grabbing an enemy and prevents you from doing something else. What I'm pointing at is how Sam Fisher changes his animation slightly as he creeps towards a guard. At first his hands are too his side, but as the proximity lessens he moves his arm to his knife. That kind of thing is great and doesn't affect gameplay at all. I'm not talking about when he actually grabs the guard, that's just part of the gif.

Oh ok! I thought it might have had some sort of influence on controls.
My bad! Never tried Chaos Theory, might ease the wait for TPP ^^

Humans with ridiculous powers/skills like Foxhound, Dead Cell, and the Cobra unit would be perfect.

Giant whale would be okay if it was just a part of a Psycho Mantis fight like one of his "attacks" or something.

Find it hard to believe that Mantis could conjure up a huge flaming whale. The most he could muster as a full grown adult fully in control of his powers was a basketball-sized energy ball.

There was never any indication he had pyrokinesis or summon abilities lol I think he manages to take the chopper out but it's some sort of hallucination he inflicts on the pilots to cause them to crash or something. Guess you could make an argument that there was no room in the MGS1 boss room for a giant flaming whale but that wouldn't explain why he never uses any sort of flame attack or summon a smaller creature.

I mean if there's one Splinter Cell worth playing it's Chaos Theory. One level is set in Hokkaido, Japan and it's essentially Ninja Simulator 2005.

Interesting stuff. The part where he has to escape the enemy base while sending drone attack and a helicopter to pick him up was exciting.

The Fulton Recovery thing is goofy but I just chalk it as part of MGS silliness/charm, which includes using the stupid cardboard box to hide.

I always suspected those scenes were the hallucinogenic effect of drugs and malnutrition, with a dash of psychic influence.

oooooh I think a lot of people called that one since the E3 2013 trailer ;)

Intuitively, I guess I sort of knew that. Maybe it was injected into the depths of my memory as an amorphous blob long, long ago and has just now been revived...

I'll revert then to an anomaly that we find in Ground Zeroes while rescuing Paz. She utters these words as Big Boss is hauling her to the rescue helicopter: "Pain... is an illusion. Pain... is in the mind." Ponder that for a while. Could be nothing, could be something.

I hope they change the fulton sound. Enemies should only scream if they are conscious. It got pretty annoying throughout the demonstration.

MGS has always been ridiculous, but the balloons in the middle of daylight should be easily spotted by your opponent

Also, when Snake is flying away, why does the chopper arrive from the direction of the base and fly back over the base on his return to the rig...

I understand MGS has earned some liberties, but that's just thoughtless design...

The original iterations of this gameplay mechanics in Portable Ops went for realism where you had to drag enemy soldiers back to your truck.

Horrible, horrible. The game became unfun if you wanted to do significant recruiting. Fulton spoils a bit of immersion, but it's a better mechanism gameplay wise.

Gosh, that was fantastic. Pretty much everything about it was amazing. Definitely the future of video games right here.

This is the very first game I have ever seen that I cannot wait at all for it to come out. Please based Kojima, tell me this game will come out, at the latest, early 2015.

This definitely looks like a game I will have to play on hard mode from the start. Hopefully fultons alert guards on higher difficulty settings.

Yes, it's like in most games these days where the bloody screen disappears after a while. Eventually (I don't know the exact metrics) you will be prompted to heal and Snake will spray some healing thing on him to recover.

I dislike both of those things too but luckily they can be disabled AND you get extra points for disabling them.

Health regen sounds really disappointing. I enjoy the health bar... I feel like they could have done something much more interesting. I'd have loved the Resistance styled regenerative-by-quarter design if anything.

So when Snake takes enough damage...he is told to heal? And then what? You have to have the correct item, or you die? I'm not a fan of using the screen as a health indicator at all, it just never feels right to me.

Good to hear you can disable reflex mode/marking.

I'm really disappointed with the health/regeneration. But the world looks great. I can't wait for the online modes and exploring a world that will undoubtedbly be filled with insane easter eggs/collectibles.

What if you could tie your enemies down and call in a horse/support to pick up said player, who then takes them to a truck? That way, recruiting is automatic, but not so silly.

I can definitely see the fulton being limited in the final game. You can eliminate any threat without killing them or having to hide the body, an infinite amount of times with this build.

They just need to change that, maybe make it so that nearby enemies can investigate the spot the balloon was sent from if they see it and make soldier yells audible to others. And the instant alert + infinite "stick up" need to change for sure.

Other than that, gold

So, only MGS3 and Peace walker is needed before you can play TPP?

Everytime I tried to get into MGS series (like peace walker on PSP back then), everyone has been saying "you need to play the previous metal gear games". Is just too much for me to play every metal gear...

IMO you can even skip MGS3......I'm no expert on MGS series but..from my experience, MGS3 basically sets up a background for MGS4 to give a proper conclusion for Solid Snake. You need to play MGS3 in order to understand MGS4.

Peace Walker, to me, is only loosely related to MGS3 beside a little bit back story of The Boss, which was explained in the game to an extent that serves well for the story. You don't need to worry about the rest in MGS3 in order to enjoy PW.

PW, on the other hand, is extremely closely related to MGSV, from story to gameplay. It introduces so many new faces e.g. Paz, Chico, Amanda, Coldman, Strangelove, Miller, Huey, etc (it almost felt like a reboot to me, before digging more into the lore of course) and sets up the whole world for MGSV. System wise, PW is the first game introduced mother base and recruiting system. MGSV could have been called Peace Walker 2. Hell even the genre for MGSV is the same as PW, "Tactical Espionage Operations", while all other MGS games are "Tactical Espionage Action".

You know, the last Metal Gear game that I both played and enjoyed was Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty on Ps2 13 years ago.

I am so excited to jump back in to the world of Metal Gear.

THAT LOOOKED SO FUN. And the setting and characters seem interesting. i hope the story is presented more like how it was in MGS1, more grounded - and less twisty / turny / complicated nonsense that it turned into in the later installments.

i think there's enough call-backs in peace walker that one would be better served having played MGS3 as well. a lot of the nuance of the big boss/boss story would be lost on the player. i would imagine there will be some in this game as well.

plus MGS3 one of the best games of all time. why not play it?

I agree with you. MGS3 is an incredible game. One of my favorite PS2 games. I'd recommend it to everyone who has time. To those who want to rush into MGSV, at least play PW - being my point :)

Wow, this has seriously become my most anticipated game by far. All of the options you have really do drive home the open world stealth sandbox feel. I can't wait for people to figure out badass ways of tackling missions. And the game itself looks damned great, too, especially the character animations. I like that the silliness is present, too. I do appreciate a nice grounded story, but I think stuff like the Fulton system doesn't really contradict the relative insanity of the MGS world. It's video-gamey as fuck, and I love it for that.

I didn't even know some of those maneuvers could be pulled off in Ground Zeroes. I kinda want to play a bit of it right now, actually, haha.

Love Ocelot's middle aged design, too. Nice to see him finally go full on with the western motif.

How does Big Boss convince all these soldiers to abandon their family and their army unit and work for him anyway?

Remember... Big boss isn't exactly a good guy. If they don't work for him they get thrown in the brig until they start to comply. How you achieve this is never shown but there is a lot you can infer. This is how it worked in PW.

I have a few questions that I could use some help with.

1. The characters in the series have several different names. big boss, venom snake, naked snake, liquid snake. Where do these names come from? (I know big boss and liquid are different people). Just, if I understand correctly, big boss went from naked snake, to big boss, to venom snake. Are these just nicknames from the fans? Or is he actually called that in the game.

2. I'm not keen on some gaf rules, in this thread or one related to the game, if I like a fan trailer I made of the gameplay demo from today, will I get in trouble?

There is a reason snake turns into big boss. You have to play mgs3 to understand why but that was a great segment. Very memorable.

This is my first entry, I watched a youtube series that summed up the important parts of all the games. I think I know the event you're talking about. Besides that however, they actually called him naked snake? Are they going to call him venom snake? Or maybe it's the persona mixed with his legend? (seeing as they say he is a legend to all soldiers)

He prefers Snake but the other soldiers call him Boss.

Yes, during Operation Snake Eater Naked Snake was his actual codename. The whole Venom snake thing remains to be seen.

You should really go play the Legacy Collection.

In the beginning of mgs3 zero gave snake the codename "naked snake" because he only had a tranq gun, knife and a couple of other things i believe so the term "naked" actually means almost completely defenseless. Then at the end he turns into Big Boss. Venom Snake is what he will turn into in TPP because of his ideologies and his descent as a villain, it all should lead up to the first Metal Gear game where Solid Snake will try to kill his father Venom Snake.
