If I could change the number of teams from each Federation I'd change this

Move Australia back in the OFC where they belong.

AFC (Asia): 4 places
CAF (Africa): 4 places
CONCACAF : 5 places
CONMEBOL : 5 places
OFC (Oceania): 1 place
UEFA (Europe): 13 places

Until the overall quality of play improves from the AFC and CAF I see no reason why some CONCACAF teams and UEFA teams should be left out.
I disagree, apart from Mexico, USA and Costa Rica, most teams in the area are still quite bad or don't know how to perform at this kind of level. If Panama was in this WC, they'd just be another punching bag considering that the USA managed to score 3 on them with a team full of subs.

So I'm greek-american, I root for both teams confident in the fact they are unlikely to play each other cuz that would require both beating long odds lol.

Anyway, my dad who was born in a small village in Greece just got home very cheerful and I asked him why he was so happy, and he said "Greece won 0-0!!!"

lol. That is Greek football fandom in a nutshell. It is more about trying to survive for one more match than having real hopes of winning. Never seen my dad happier than in 2004 when they 1-0'd their way into a Euro Cup.

This would be horrible.

Mexico saw a huge improvement from qualifying to the Cup. If they played like they did during qualifying everyone would just roll over them. Panama could have improved too, they could have. Maybe...probably...

Greece playing out another boring 0-0? Not surprising at all. Japan have to be one of the most disappointing teams this year, so much potential they don't ever show on the big stage.

Australia continues to be the best team from Asia, and they've lost twice. Absolutely miserable confederation.

I'm from Uruguay so had to post this

They should break it up. Allow two teams from North America. That way the US and Mexico can just kick the shit out of Canada (always fun) every couple years to qualify.

Edit: ^^that's pretty cool^^

I'm a CONCACAF supporter and even I think 5 spots is too much. There is a huge drop-off in quality after the top 3 (USA, MEX, CRC), as we are seeing with Honduras. At most you could give them a guaranteed 4th spot, instead of 3.5.

Give CONCACAF 5th place to CONMEBOL and you have a deal.

Does anybody else think this is stupid?

Supposedly FIFA is considering banning mexico from the WC

http://prosoccertalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/19/fifa-investigates-homophobic-racist-behavior-from-4-world-cup-nations-including-mexico/

Yelling the word “puto” (a derogatory term to refer to homosexuals) at the opposing goalkeeper when he takes a goal kick has become a Mexican trademark in soccer stadiums. This ritual is part of the live Mexican soccer experience. It happens in every single stadium in Mexico and almost no one can be excused from participating in this act.

During the Mexico vs Brazil match in Fortaleza, Brazilian fans began to imitate the Mexican ritual and FIFA took note of it. FIFA’s concern is that this ritual, which they label as homophobic will spread to fans from other countries.

What is the connection here?

Qatar's tourist "recommendations" on what people are not to wear while there, in preparation for the World Cup.

Obviously not a 1 to 1 comparison, just pointing out that as long as they get their money they couldn't give two shits about the public. People already brought up how the WC is already happening in 2 countries with truly homophobic views that go beyond an audience shout for fun, so I thought I'd add to that.

meh. I dont personally mind this..
but I guess if fans started chanting "motherfucker!!" or any other insult you can come up with, at any other big sporting event (example NBA), the respective sanctioning bodies would be up in arms as well. just 2 cents.

thats not what puto means lol
It can and often does. I don't know its Mexican context but I've heard it used that way (and other ways were it'd be the equivalent to the s word and f word used to exaggerate). As a noun its almost always a gay slur. The only way it can be defended the other way is with the equivalent to the stupid Louis CK joke.

I know spanish profanity is a lot different than english (as its often regional) Its sometimes annoying when Spanish speakers pretend because they use a word a certain way it isn't used the way someone else defines it.

Its a gay slur in this context and should stop.

A quote from a Mexican
"I heard them during the Cameroon game and also today against Brazil. Every single time the opposing goalie had a goal kick they chanted ["puto"]. Every time. I watched both games on ESPN (in English, not ESPN Deportes). I've lived in the U.S. for 15 years, but I was born and bred in Mexico and my family is still there. I know exactly what they mean when they yell that slur.

"The media should make a bigger deal out of this and publicly shame that country and its fans. No other country in the world does this, and it would be unacceptable in any U.S stadium. I am from Mexico and this behavior brings me profound shame. I am not gay but I have always defended equal rights and respect for everyone.

"Yes, the word 'puto' has different meanings, but there is only one interpretation in this particular case which is to question one's manhood. Therefore it is being used as a homophobic slur in this instance, there are no two ways around it. I am sure if you ask any gay man who grew up in Mexico he will find this word deeply offensive and hurtful. Mexican fans argue that they don't use it as a homophobic slur, but it is as nonsensical as Dan Snyder and others claiming that "redskin" is not a slur but a term of 'endearment.' It is the typical response from a bully.
"
That being said banning them is absurd. Just force their football federation to crack down on it. Not to mention the irony of the next two hosts (well one because I don't think they will be held on Qatar)

I guess it is a Mexican thing, i've only heard it being used in a "douchebag" kind of way.

In this context I always thought the fans meant the oposing team are bitches or pussies. Is pussy a homophobic term? Honest question. I don't use the word myself. I've been called one by friends but always assumed it to mean like "you are so weak bro, man up" kind of thing.

Mexican and South American GAF please clarify. Is puto a homophobic remark there?

I know it isn't in Costa Rica. It can mean different things in different contexts, but I've never seen it used that way here.

Yes its a homophobic and gendered insult

I've never heard it used as an insult were it's not homophobic or sexist. The excuse of "coward or traitor" is implying your not a real 'man.'

The only time its not is when its used as an exclamation. Like "f--king" in the us.
Edit: I should add im not south american but lived in mexico for a short time and speak Spanish.

Yup. It's the same thing as calling someone a faggot. Never yelled it at a stadium for that reason.
