I got to say, I don't like that the animation is exactly the same. I understand time constraints and all, but really, a lot of these custom moves look like the same things you could easily get out of the moveset editors for Brawl.

They're not really different moves, just different properties of existing moves. Palutena's are legitimately different moves, though.

I really like Bowser's fireball variation on his standard-b and wish I could take it online.

Pic of the day. Here's Donkey Kong's third standard special attack, Storm Punch!! Thanks to the customization options, each fighter is stocked with 12 different special moves. The number of attacks is pretty appalling.

We've made it so that customization options, including special attacks, will be disabled when you're playing online in With Anyone mode. After all, we have to think about game balance, and it's crucial for anonymous players to be able to use reliable tactics against one another. When you're playing in single player, battling with friends online, or playing locally, you're free to play however you want--with or without customization.

Cool! It will be nice to play with this one after mastering their default movesets.

They're not meant to be entirely different moves, didnt you see the smash direct?

To be fair, sakurai did say variations.

One thing I'd like to see or hope that will be revealed later (if its exists) is alternate unlockable Final Smashes. Playing a normal game with everything on and Final Smashes get old pretty fast, especially at the frequency at which the Smash Ball spawns unless you have it on Low (I dunno about Smash U, but on Brawl even on Low it spawned more than I expected it to)

Anyways, it would be cool to get alternate Final Smashes, especially for characters that already have a wack default one (like DK) I guess one could argue "ohh but what about the balance??" but hell we got customizable SPECIALS now. A new Final Smash that you can select between shouldn't hurt any worse than the custom specials. If anything it might even make characters more appealing to some people who weren't really interested in them before whether it was because of something small like a lame Final Smash or Specials they didn't like/couldn't get the hang of.

Since Sakurai seems to be keen on tickling EVERYONE'S fancy this go-round (options wise at least, gameplay I guess is still up in the air until it releases for the tourney players), then why the hell not?

idk. i feel like i'd only play around with these custom move sets when i'm by myself until the novelty wears off. but once im playing with either cousins or friends i would just play normally.

Yeah, I'm aware they're just variations, but still. Slightly dissappointed with this one, it just looks kind of unnatural with the original animation. I haven't thought any of the others we've seen so far looked unnatural, though.

...yeah I still think the game would be better without custom moves. Although I don't dislike that they're mostly variations - it makes it so that the characters are still focused on their individually-crafted movesets instead of being... mishmashy.

Like, I find it difficult to form a positive opinion on Palutena's fighter design thusfar because she effectively doesn't even have her own special moves. It takes a lot away from the character's individual flair, I think.

I don't hate that there's custom moves because
1) We still have standardized movesets
2) They're going to happen anyways eventually thanks to mods, and playing around with Brawl moveset editors was kind of fun.

With Palutena and the Mii Fighters, though, I will admit I do have some worries. I hope they have standard movesets for competitive play and such.

Sakurai calls them Smash Bros 4 (3DS) and Smash Bros 5 (Wii U) if that's any easier for you to say/remember.

It's not about remembering it, it's about how boring the titles are.

For some reason it was less abrasive when it was "____64" or "Super____". With the Wii U and 3DS the titles just sound ugly, they don't flow at all and it doesn't fit with their previous naming scheme either.

In the beginning of a Street Fighter III Third Strike match, you have to choose between your three Super moves. I wonder how the custom movesets would've been received if the game treated them similarly.

Like what if, at the beginning of the match, you choose Mario and then you choose 1 of 3 sets of moves? Each set would have an individual special move assigned to B, side B, up B, and down B. This might be easier to balance than getting to fully customize among 12 individual moves. I do hope some early tournaments give the custom moves a shot though. Maybe it works out to be balanced.

I agree that Palutena doesn't seem to have a solid identity as a fighter, but I think she's an exceptional case. Most fighters have core specials and then a number of little tweaks/variations of those specials (e.g., Mario.)

Oh hey. havent seen you in a while! And you have a tag now...unless youve been had this tag and I just dont remember.

Hey there! :) Yeah, sorry for not being terribly active lately: I've been pretty busy with work...
I actually don't know when (or why) I got that tag, but I've had it for a while! I used to have Wes doing the Open Sesame Tofu dance from MOTHER3, haha.

I think the fact that Palutena seems to be focused around having a custom moveset makes her more generic/boring. I'm hoping that I'm proven wrong because she's a great character. It's just she doesn't have any real "moveset identity" for lack of being able to fully express what it is I have a problem with.

Based on the wording of the comment it sounds like they're balancing everything with the default moveset in mind.

Yeah, pretty sure that's why custom moves are for online friend matches only. Maybe they'll end up balanced somehow anyway. I'd be really interested in seeing competitive Smashers give them a try. It could really shake up the tier list and variety of play styles we see. Plus, it's not a random element like items or certain stage hazards.

haha I see, speaking of which, ive been listening to the mother 3 soundtrack all night

So we're getting like 45+ characters each with 12 different special moves...Dis man crazy /s. I know Namco Bandai have worked with larger movesets but damn when I think about the amount of work they're putting into this, it's incredible. I'm with the group who will try to get a feel of the defaults before exploring further.

The Dong is strong.

Well that's another addition to the heap of unintentional (?) Jojo references in this game.

You can when you're phasing against Gaf. I don't know why anyone on here or on Smashboards would even care about With Anyone limitations. If online is at all decent, you should be and to find someone to beat on anytime of day or night.

Custom movesets are in both versions. We saw a small glimpse of it in the 3DS trailer.

Awesome, thanks. I was hoping I would be able to play around with them when the 3DS version launches. I'm so curious to see what some of my favorite characters' custom moves are! How do you go about changing Yoshi's neutral special, for example?

Why hasn't with friends online been addressed?

They should not allow customization unless both people agree to it , even then I wouldn't want to be placed in situation that majority wants.

There will be always be person that spams dk storm punch even with them agreeing to play you without customization to mess around with you.

Friends online sounds like the do whatever you want mode , sounds like the delete everyone mode that has abnormal attack damage and attacks.

Sounds like anti competition system for online , I know that real life is key for that but it would suck to placed with it by force , if it's not the way you want to experience game.
