Thanks for the input everyone, it has been confusing me for a while. I do want to play the legacy collection, but $70 (yikes!), and the HD collection is $50 (kinda yikes!).

We're obviously biased but it's worth it. And far better than reading wikipedia summaries or watching the cutscenes on youtube. MGSV doesn't come out until next year. You have plenty of time. Play in release order.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Naked Snake was his code name during Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater, and the name with which he self identifies during the prequels.

Big Boss is the title awarded to him after the ending of MGS3. Post-MGS3, most people outside his inner circle refer to him as "Boss", although "Snake" is still used interchangeably until Peace Walker. Mostly it's people closer to him that call him Snake, though.

Venom Snake is the name he's been given for The Phantom Pain. All we know right now is that it symbolizes his descent into darkness. The malice in his heart acts like a poison, or a "venom", causing him to turn from a hero to a villain. Again, he's still identified as Big Boss by others. You can see this in the stream, where Ocelot doesn't mention the name "Snake" at all and consistently refers to him as "Big Boss".

Overall, his most prominent identity is Big Boss. He's called that throughout the first four Metal Gear titles (MG1, MG2, MGS1, MGS2) and it's used quite frequently throughout Portable Ops and Peace Walker. He really only had the Snake codename for a short time, but has trouble letting it go.

I laughed way too hard at this.

This game's framerate and resolution suck, they should sacrifice other areas to make it 60fps and 1080p.

Wow, the draw distance in this game is awful. Why is the polycount so low?

comaplining about IQ is lame, don't be a lamer.

IMO you can even skip MGS3......I'm no expert on MGS series but..from my experience, MGS3 basically sets up a background for MGS4 to give a proper conclusion for Solid Snake. You need to play MGS3 in order to understand MGS4.

Peace Walker, to me, is only loosely related to MGS3 beside a little bit back story of The Boss, which was explained in the game to an extent that serves well for the story. You don't need to worry about the rest in MGS3 in order to enjoy PW.

PW, on the other hand, is extremely closely related to MGSV, from story to gameplay. It introduces so many new faces e.g. Paz, Chico, Amanda, Coldman, Strangelove, Miller, Huey, etc (it almost felt like a reboot to me, before digging more into the lore of course) and sets up the whole world for MGSV. System wise, PW is the first game introduced mother base and recruiting system. MGSV could have been called Peace Walker 2. Hell even the genre for MGSV is the same as PW, "Tactical Espionage Operations", while all other MGS games are "Tactical Espionage Action".

Though MGS3 does feature the best version of Ocelot.

wtf is this "skip mgs3" bs.

It's the best game in the series so far. Play that, then Peace Walker, then Ground Zeroes and bam! Big Boss prequel run.

It's not coming this year.

That said, I think people shouldn't worry so much. It's probably an early 2015 release.
When Kojima talked about this video on Twitter, he said "early stage"
And we still don't have a release date
So, early 2015 looks really optimistic

You realize demo builds are often old, right? They showed you this on YT. They showed it to journos at E3.

I guarantee you it is not what's being played in the office, currently. It's the game in a good enough state to show people and in a controlled environment. It's not the newest build from Mondays meeting or something.

God's had his chance.
I've been thinking about this beautiful bastard since the stream and I can't help but come back to the idea of defending/building/invading other bases.

So if you can train up your guys and stuff...

Imagine jumping into someones base... your local MGS superfreak game psycho who loves em all and just trounces games on the regular. All his soldiers are master class badass. His base is a hellish upwards climb from the lower tiers to the upper ruling class helicarrier and storage decks before finally ascending to the grand rooftops. cyphers and battlecannons, straight up roads with tanks and jeeps with .50s, multiple helicopters at the ready. And you load into this psychopaths war harem and the game is all
"Lawl make it to the command room :p"

I needs this stuffs in my life. I'm gonna be that guy. My base will be a freak of military nature whose every CREVACE will be known unto me. Like the smooth glistening shine of my metallic red hand... the Mother Base will consume your soul and spit your rotting corpse into the pacific.

Come in and know me better, man.

it will be true if you guys stop complaining about everything, "muh pop-in!" etc.

otherwise Kojima will be like, "we were going to release the game this autumn but decided to delay due to large amounts of fan 'feedback'".

nah, bruh. MGS2 is the best game, overall.

Why is everybody forgetting MG1 and MG2.
If i remember correct Those where About Snake and Big Boss also right ?

Yeah MG1 and 2 were pretty important but no one really got to play them, and the translations sucked until they re-translated the original MSX games in the Subsistence version of MGS3.

Basically TPP might even go into MG1 or 2 territory by the end of the game.

I wonder if you attack the base as snake or as a soldier. It would be daft if you attack the base as snake. And snake comes out to defend it xD

I need the boss reveals to finally get hyped. Don't know why, but the bosses are always the triggers that get me hyped for these games.

damn this got me hype

So i only played Metal gear and Metal gear snakes revenge on the NES. Did i miss anything while i was gone? :) Anyway is this game stand alone or will i be completely lost?

Game looks fun i like the idea of the whole meta game and building an base/army. I just hope it will get used at some point. Like the last mission you deplay 300 men and attack a base head on as a distraction or something.
