It's said in the presentation you can send your personnel on missions without you. Just like in Peace Walker. Invading someone's base, however, I think is done by your Big Boss.

What kinds of missions are there that aren't base invasions?

It isn't canon. I believe Kojima referred to it as an alternate story or something along those lines, plus he's not so subtly implied that the only canon games are the ones he's written and directed.

(And thank God since Rising's story is awful)
From what i've read, Rising's story is better than MGS4's. Villain motivations were far better than most game villains

It's amazing how seamless Big Boss goes from shooting a guard, horse stealth, dismount, roll and then run in one fluid motion.

Blows my mind.

The last MGS i played was 3 and that still blows me away with how numerous the player's options are. I still feel like 3 had more rhan were in GZ. they can allow leaning while in first person hopefully

Yeah Rising is easily the best written game in the series since Snake Eater. That's not saying much---Portable Ops and Peace Walker both read like fanfiction and Guns of the Patriots is a shambling camel mess of art death. It's not 1999-2004 Kojima good, but it's pretty fucking good. It also features the return of MGS1-3 style deeply involved codec conversations.

The motion blur looks amazing.

There's some crazy pop-in going on in that gif, but other than that it looks amazing. Pop-in never bothered me too much in GZ either.

They've come a long way from the tank controls the series has been known for.

Tank controls is what you'd see in Gears of War or traditional Resident Evil games, there hasn't been a Metal Gear game with tank controls.

They have been slightly rigid when it came to shifting between actions though, which MGS4 and MGSV especially have improved on enormously.

I'll say it again:

No one has ever made a convincing argument as to why MGS4's story sucks or ruins any of the canon.

Do you want to give those people another chance? Because we've been listening to arguments on that very topic since MGS4's release.

Yeah, there's a huge shadow pop-in in the background and then disappears again near the end of the gif. I didn't even realize it when I made the gif, I was staring at the horse the whole time, lol. Hopefully they'll get most of it fixed before release.

Cause nanomachines.

Seriously. Nanomachines becomes meaningless and is used as a storytelling clutch and is basically magic.

Also, 20 min to hour long cutscenes are terrible. Screws up the pacing beyond belief. So much exposition.

ZERO BECOMES ONE AND THEN ZERO AND THEN NOTHING.

Metal Gear is fantastic when it focuses on the characters and their emotional journeys, but the story/plot/narrative is fucking retarded in MGS4.

V will make 4's gameplay look unbelievably short - thats for sure. Just look at all the possibilities from this demo...going to spend way too much time with it, and then the boss battles and story/cutscenes, oh lawd...if they put everything together nicely (which im sure they will) this will be GOAT MG game no doubt

Rising killed Raiden's character for me. And not in a good way.

yeah, a lot of options but after a few sessions you develop 'the claw'. lol

I'll say it again:

No one has ever made a convincing argument as to why MGS4's story sucks or ruins any of the canon.

I don't think it ruins the canon because I don't care about canon and I think every MGS should be judged on it's own merits rather than as an episode of a greater serial work. My biggest issue with MGS4 is the feeling that there's no bigger message or subtext behind it and that Kojima's direction wasn't as strong as other games in the series. Case in point: Kojima's original plan was for Snake and Otacon to be executed for war crimes at the end. His staff thought it was a downer so he let them go with an ending where Big Boss comes back to life long enough to have a father-and-son moment with Snake, then Snake lives happily ever after.

Also, the wartime sneaking gameplay was abandoned a third of the way through the game, replaced by a trailing mission (NOBODY LIKES THESE) a literal retread of MGS1's maps, and one single good sneaking level on Outer Haven.

I'll say it again:

No one has ever made a convincing argument as to why MGS4's story sucks or ruins any of the canon.

Thanks for proving my point.

Gaming Hipsters.

Yea, nobody has made a decent attempt at dissecting why MGS4 was the worst in the series, and anyone who tries to are just going against the masses because it's so popular. I mean it won GAF's game of the year not once, but twice!

i wonder if there will be little sidequests in the open world map, like in RDR and GTA where you can help random people.

Yea... I just remembered we have seen no native people in their towns.

You would think the towns would be populated by actual Afghans, right? They didn't overlook that did they?

I do not have twitter but people who do, would you mind going to twitter and tweeting kojima about adding a photo mode feature in like infamous second son, the feature is absolutely amazing and would be incredible in the phantom pain especially with all the amazing detail, what do you say?

To prove its worth it you could link second son photos taken with the feature

Can't disagree more.

Rising's story is juvenile and underdeveloped with the most cringe-worthy writing (and acting, consequently) of the series by far, and every villain was a one-dimensional joke. Not to mention Raiden is almost completely ruined as a character. There's no flow or consistency, it just jumps from one plot point to another. It just feels like a bad parody of a MG game to appease post-MGS4 complainers while trying to be ~badass~ and ~cool~ which would be fine and all if they didn't, you know, develop and market it as a big new MG title, initially claiming it was canon too. I mean if we do accept it as canon then it feels completely inconsistent with the tone, atmosphere, and style of the rest of the series. Okay yeah it's Platinum's trademark style but when it comes to a new entry in a nearly three-decade-old series I'd rather they maintain a tone and respect what came before. Why do you think the Snake martial arts in TTS is so derided? Because it doesn't feel right. The same holds true for MGR for me as a whole - everything about it feels like the kind of fanfiction a 13 year old would dream up. There's no subtlety or nuance to what it tries to explore (and yes, I realize Kojima is far from being the best writer but his stuff feels like Shakespeare compared to this). The story in the MG games is incredibly important and the reason I've been a fan since 1998 so seeing it turned into senseless noise was really disappointing to me, especially since I really wanted to see a greater exploration of Raiden as a character.

MGS4 has its problems, but at least (as far as my I'm concerned) it commits to an ethos and style that doesn't feel contradictory or incompatible with the rest of the series and still logically follows everything that came before it.

But hey I realize I'm in the minority with this and MGR is loved by many so more power to them I guess.

Off the top of my head, this is during the soviet war in afghanistan and holding a high risk POW in the middle of a crowded town sounds like a bad idea. Makes sense to choose an empty town, for security and cover.

Did I:SS have a camera or something? You can just take screenshots with the PS4, does it use those?

You can order your troops to go secure diamonds or fight battles (could be anything from protecting a convoy to an assassination, but in the game it will be represented in stat-based turn-based gameplay like Peace Walker). Remember, you're a band of mercenaries. There's plenty of work to go around.

this probably way off-topic, but

kojima is jay-z

mgs1 is reasonable doubt (the classic no one will ever forget)

ZOE1 is volume 1 (wet the appetite between classics)

mgs2 is volume 2 (the best seller that also alienated fans)

ZOE2 is volume 3 (everyone thought it was amazing for 2 weeks and then abandoned it quick-fast)

mgs3 is the blueprint (the classic return to form)

portable ops is blueprint 2 (the big follow-up that at first appeared innovative, but fell flat)

mgs4 is the black album (supposed to be the big comeback, but it fell way short)

peace walker is magna carta/holy grail (i like a lot of what i'm seeing/hearing, but i know you're just doing this for the kids)

something like that, couldn't figure out where to throw in kingdom come, dynasty, etc.

edit: i guess MG1 is Hawaiian sophie?

second son looks great but the consumers asked for a better way to take pictures of the game so they added a photo mode where you can rotate the camera, change field of view etc. The shot from photo mode looks professionally done compared to the share button function. here are some pics with photo mode

Yeah, they did a great job of making it look like what the eye sees instead of a camera. Should look wonderful at 60fps.

You may want to remove the second and last screens for people that haven't played it yet.

If you're willing to do a little reading, you should check out Terry Wolfe's articles on MGS4. If you're just looking for everything wrong with MGS4 in a short soundbite, try "NANOMACHINES"

No you're not alone, I was WTFing at the praise for Rising's story. Using Raiden's PTSD is a good idea, but it's so undercooked. PG also can only direct one kind of cutscene- the bad movie kind.

yeah but RULES OF NATURE

really though, I recognize that Rising's story is flawed, and didn't go in the direction many people wanted. But MGS4's story just bored me, while Rising at least kept me entertained. I guess I'm just shallow :/

I remember there being a great emotional story in MGS4 being buried under FUCKING NANOMACHINES.

Just booted up. Holy fuck, the love theme in the menu takes me back.

Why is Snake in front of The Boss's grave? How's he know about her?

He's in front of Big Boss's grave, The Boss's is nearby.

Solid Snake's character design is fantastic here.

Oh God, these weird ass fake commercials. The Hayter one is hilarious. Who is the lady interviewing him?

Hayter looks so funny. "Let your dreams drive you."

That looks cool.

Signing up for Twitter isn't a big deal, so you should do that if you want to message Kojima.

the best way to send pics from a ps4 right now is to send a message to someone through the ps4 and then use the mobile app. that way it's not compressed to hell
