I like it.

The hat looks a bit off, but I like it.

I'm perfectly fine with palette swaps, we can't expect every character to have a full-fledged alt.

Edit: on a second thought, removing the hat would make him a smaller target.

There's probably nothing modeled under the hat so that's why it's there.
They bothered to model some hair under Mario's hat in Brawl just for that one taunt of his. Don't think it'd be that weird to model some more hair under Link's cap for an alternate-costume you'd see for more than a few seconds.

Link should lose his hat during battle like Mario in Super Mario 64.

I want a Lucina alt for Marth, but she basically just has his costume with a mask. Maybe the game could have a mask toggle for default Marth.

I'm just happy at the prospect of a larger number of palette choices & more distinct variations.

Only a small handful of characters qualifies for true alt costumes anyway, so I much prefer this method if it means we can expect more characters to get fun color swaps.

Yeah, looks terrible (at least remove the hat!). I'm not ready to give up on each character getting at least one alternate costume, but this doesn't instill confidence...

I remember going through this process when Ness was disconfirmed for Brawl after Lucas was first revealed...

... And then Sakurai revealed Ness and I went straight to step 2 because of all the people who told me to accept that Ness was cut

This shit only applies when there's a reason for it. Snake is still a legit possibility.

I missed the part where Snake was a Nintendo character.

Not saying he's not in, but using Ness is a shitty example. He is owned by Nintendo and has been here since the first game.

Guess I'm going to be the exception and say I actually like that they kept the hat.

In fact with Brawl mods I'd look for Link outfits with his hat even when based on hatless outfits i.e. Wind Waker PJs.

Good point. Maybe it's just lack of time at this point and the team is trying to get everything done.

Hmm technically Little Mac's alt is just a palette swap, right?
Well... no. A palette swap is where all instances of a certain color are replaced with another color, e.g. in Super Mario Bros., how Luigi's sprite was just Mario's with all instances of red replaced with white and all instances of brown replaced with green. Since you're not replacing all instances of one color with another, Wireframe Mac isn't a palette swap. It's a recolor--it doesn't change Little Mac's character model at all. But it's not a palette swap.

Neat.

EDIT:

Pic of the day. Here's Link in an outfit based on his ordinary clothes in Skyward Sword! The art style looks a little different, but the actual clothing model is still his usual tunic.

link looks horrible in comparison with skyward sword link. What the f*ck sakurai!? (just my opinion :P)

edit: i really cant believe how bad that looks, wow

I do really like how Sakurai is putting more thought into the alt colors for everyone this time rather than just a select few. Hopefully as the game gets closer we'll see some actual alt costumes, but either way great POTD.

So then... neither is this?

It's a bit disappointing, because it could have been done as an alternate costume instead of a simple recolor of his main tunic. But still, better to have recolors than have nothing at all.

So, speaking of Skyward Sword...I literally just put the wiimote down from beating it for the first time...Loved the story and the art style. Those controls can go to the deepest depths of hell, however.

Glad to see a little homage in this costume/palette swap though.

neat, now gimme zelda outfit too samurai
Ooo I like it. Would love to if they can pull off SS Zelda.

Yay! Lots of SS Zelda love :3
This does give me some hope for a skyward sword alt, but she'd really need an alt model rather than just a retexture :P

So after all that Xenoblade talk the other day, I've decided to do something that might kill me. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow, and I'm going to stream my playthrough of it.

I don't normally like to stream games like this because I'm usually too into them myself, but for some reason I feel like this one's gonna be a fun one to do. I'm more there for academics than anything, and who knows, I might end up loving it.

Anyway I'll post it up here tomorrow when it starts if anyone's interested in joining in on this long journey. I hope to be psyched as fuck for Shulk in Smash by the end of it.

It's gonna be one heck of a long playthrough stream XD
You could probably link it here as I'm sure there's a few Xenoblade fans who'd probably enjoy watching someone else experience it for the first time :3

Nope, it isn't. Lot of people here are misusing the term "palette swap".

People use palette swap because that was the term commonly used for recolours back in the day (including fighting games). People are aware technically it is a texture swap but the term palette swap helps to emphasise the focus on colours.

It would look perfectly fine if it wasn't for the hat, but the hats there so it doesn't look great. Not as terrible as people are making it out to be though.

I don't get the hat beef. The whole outfit needs to change to look like the original outfit. The hat is just one factor. You also have his strap, wrist guards, sleeves etc that need to be changed/removed.

It's stylised take on his tunic look rather than his SS starting outfit outright and the hat is part of his tunic look.

Is everyone aware? Seems to me like a good number of people are using the term just because other people do. But a lot of people using it doesn't change the fact that it's wrong. I'm guessing you already know this, but the term "palette swap" was originally used because, as a memory-saving technique, developers often reused the same sprites for different characters/objects, and simply swapped the sprite's color palette for a different one without doing anything else. But in this case, they're doing more than just swapping the color palette. So the term "palette swap" doesn't really make sense here. There are plenty of other terms that do.

That said, I don't really care enough to argue any further about this, so I'll stop here. I'm just saying, it's wrong.

Eh, that hats way more obvious than all of that, and it's just a dull beige color. Not exactly pleasing to the eye.

I really wish they'd put more effort into the alternate costumes. Samus could have easily done with some custom suits.

Considering the Phazon Suit actually is just a palette swap of the Varia suit, they really should put it in. But as for the others, while full Light / Dark suit models would be brilliant, even some small alterations like shrinking the Fusion recolour's shoulderpads would go a long way. I wonder how likely it would be for some if the time in between the 3DS and Wii U releases to be used for implementing full models for some of these alts? Most of the asset creation should have been done by now, right?
