Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

Got the halfway cheevo :(. I'm tearing through this. I love how intuitive it is. Every time I've wondered "huh, I wonder if this works..." it does.

The challenge levels are amazing as well. Doing it without upgrading health at all, and it's not so bad. The random
Boomerang Boss
wandering around the map was the hardest fight thus far.

Additionally, the armor that
gives you a charge slash after two consecutive pogos
is broken.

If any Eurogaffers who ordered a Nintendo code are still concerned about receiving a link to a US code yesterday, I just had this response from YCG.

Hello!

I'm afraid that this release is for the NA region only as additional regions are still in the tail end of development. I apologize for the confusion and the delay! Please do not give this code away, as we may need to recycle it for other players. When the time comes, we'll contact you again with your new region key. We might also need to contact one more time for region confirmation.

I love this artwork. A lot.

Bought the soundtracks for a dollar each. I'm just too poor to pay anything more.

I had to do the same and I felt so bad when I did it too.

Especially since Virt is amazing. He works incredibly hard on making awesome music. I have tremendous respect for what he does, but I am damn poor. :-( I did buy the game though because I had money loaded in my eShop account. Next time I see him in person, I'll just hand him some cash and apologize.

Just beat the game.

MAJOR SPOILERS:
While I expected Shield Knight and the Enchantress would end up being one in the same, the way they executed that ending was PERFECT! I never thought I'd use the words "emotional" in regards to Shovel Knight, but it actually got an emotional response from me. The whole game was actually a really good example of minimalist storytelling. Polar Knight was made much cooler with just a few lines of dialogue. The Black Knight's relationship with Shield Knight was never fully explained, and is all the better for it. And having Shield Knight actively participate in the final battle? Amazing.

This game, for me at least, is a great example of how to tell a story through gameplay. The story isn't complicated at all, but because it is so closely tied with the gameplay, it resonates more.

Amazing game. Completely blown away by it.

If a 360 pad is all you have on PC, then don't consider that. Sounds like Wii U is the way to go for you.
I could also sync my PS3 controller to my PC. But yeah, probably simpler to just go WiiU.

I hear the WiiU has Dark Souls/Tingle Bottle-like message functionality. Is this not in the other versions?

The soundtrack is so great I really want this game. Is it like Megaman/Megaman X where you can choose the order of the levels? Do you get special weapons after beating bosses?

Yeah, though the face buttons are preferable for the default layout on 360 than Wii U, albeit primarily due to muscle memory and what you'd expect on each platform.

Still, you can always remap jump to A and attack to B to "fix" the confirm/cancel thing, and I do like Relic usage on X. Alternatively, play with a Wii Remote instead, but if you're wanting the Game Pad for off screen and not unique Wii U functions that won't be ideal (the latter however CAN be used in conjunction with any other controller!)

Am I missing something about NG+? I've only done the plains and King Knight, but the only difference I see is
the food items you get either via large enemies or platters are now bombs.
Is that the only difference?

You also take twice as much damage.

People keep saying it's an "NES-style" game, and it definitely has a retro aesthetic, but I certainly don't remember NES games looking this good visually.

Because NES games had color-palette contraints - 13 different colors available for backgrounds, and 12 for sprites. Color makes a huge difference.

How are you guys playing the PC/Steam version? Keyboard or controller? And if controller (what I suppose) which one would you recommend? Does it support the DS4?

It supports the DS4 plugged in without any extra drivers. One of the few games I've seen to do that.

EuroGAF here, was going to wait for the wii u version but I caved in and bought the steam version after reading impressions on here. Its great so glad I did.

I already put 15 quid on my eShop account ;(

LET MINE BE A CAUTIONARY TALE! ALWAYS CHECK THE BLOODY RELEASE DATE!

Just played for an hour. Wow this game is truly amazing, everything feels perfect and goes together so well.

How long is the game?

My first playthrough was 8 hours, though that was fairly comprehensive and I'm kind of bad at these kinds of games.

You also take twice as much damage.

Hadn't even noticed. I think that's also only half as many checkpoints now that I think about it too.

This was an awesome read.

Wow, a lot of glowing impressions. Definitely tempted to get this for WiiU, especially since I got a Pro Controller recently and that thing is glorious.

Is the game really hard? Not in the mood for an unforgiving game atm

I love the Dynamo Mail. So fun to use.

I've been playing with Wii U Pro pad and a Saturn pad. Anything with a good d-pad should be fine for this game.

Seems to be on the level of older mega man games, with more forgiving checkpoints.

I'm not even kidding, I bought a 3ds two weeks ago in anticipation for this game, and so far it's exceeded my expectations. I can't tell you how elated I was that after I started up my save file and watched the opening slideshow that I wasn't met with an inane tutorial with lessons like "Press 'B' to jump". I immediately started playing and was allowed to experiment with the controls on my own terms.

These Yacht Club guys? They get it.

Was really on the fence about buying this yesterday. More because I was getting conscious about how much I was buying in this sale, ha ha and I wasn't expecting it to over £10, was thinking it'd perhaps be £8.
Still decided to pull the trigger in the end and was very happy and impressed with what I played yesterday, music is awesome and finding gameplay really fun too. This is a game I really hope comes to vita too (..alongside more AAA games...). They did say they would like it on vita, so that's hopeful.

I would double dip in a heartbeat if this game came to Vita.

I wonder if the Alchemy coin is worth buying, and whether it's single-use only.

I love the alchemy coin. It's a relic so it is multi use. It performs a strong attack for 8 mp in the form of a coin that rolls along the ground. If it doesn't kill the enemy it'll bounce back to you and you can bounce it back with your shovel. If it kills the enemy it'll keep rolling. Enemies are likely to drop more gold if you kill them with it, so I'm using it to get 50k for the feat.
