Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

If you start replaying the bosses over and over shovel only, there are some really deep mechanics in play. As I study more, I will do some write ups, but I have some notes:

I've tested this most extensively with the backer bosses due to their more accessible nature, so there might be a few details off when applying it to the Order of No Quarter:
1. There is a "clash" system. If an enemy is in their damage animation cycle, they are unable to deal contact damage to you. This also applies to certain melee weapon attacks, such as Phantom Striker's stab or Propeller Knight's lunge (the principle example of the clash system in play: jumping over the successive lunges will just get you killed in time).
2. How much you are pushed back when you shovel the opponent seems to vary on a boss-by-boss basis. This could be my eyes playing tricks on me though, so this remains untested.
3. How far the opponent is pushed back does depend on the boss. Even similarly sized enemies can suffer different amounts of pushback: Phantom Striker seems to suffer less pushback than Mr. Hat.
4. Airborn enemies don't receive any pushback. This can be taken advantage of, depending on the speed of the boss (example: against The Baz, if you hit him at the bottom of the arc, he should have enough speed that when his damage animation is over, he should be clear of you. Offensively, Mole Knight is large enough that you can take the advantage after hitting him in the face with the shovel, you can then assume a downthrust position and, if you are lucky, hit his top for extra damage).
5. Be wary of the attack animation. This is a big one. It should be noted that triggering a clash doesn't seem to cancel the melee attack animation, so you must have a way to escape out of it. A simple tactic is to back-jump away from the enemy immediately after the attack.

And for an extremely important note, especially for point 5:
6. Jumping cancels your shovel slash animation. If the opponent wasn't hit by your slash because you accidentally cancelled early, you risk being hit by the enemies attack. You can practice the timing as to when to jump out of the slash with the Wolves on the stranded ship, since they take two hits, have predictable movement, and are very fast. (Special note for high end play that still uses upgrades: with the charge slash equipped, as long as you pressed the slash button, if you jumped out of it even instantly you are still valid for a charge swingback if you keep the attack button held).

I'm having fun but man the airship level is frustrating. It doesn't help that I accidentally broke one of the checkpoints.
You poor fool. :P

Great game.

It's sort of like homecooking.
Simple ingredients, tried and true formula, executed with a lot of love.
Easily the best retro-styled game of this sort since Mega Man 9.

That "beat the game in 1 hour 30 minutes" one sure looks fun

It's not so bad. I inadvertently got it while trying to beat the game without spending any cash. The Plague Knight is some kind of obnoxious though, chasing him around without any special weapons. Could you sit still for one second?

Just beat the Treasure Knight.

I see this game is continuing in the grand tradition of "the water level" being annoying as all hell just like in all NES games.

That and the ice stage. All the other stages are spectacular, even if the ultimate level is a bit of a let-down after the glorious penultimate level.

I just looked at the achievements / feats for this game....

dude-wtf.jpg

Meh. They can all be cheesed. Just like MM9/10. The game doesn't save until you complete a level, so you can just exit to the title screen any time you die. Works for the time achievement as well. I was farting around on a second playthrough and died a ton, still got about 2:15. The only hard bit will be the boss rush.

Random quick strategies I've found for bosses:

-King Knight - Not too much here, just taking advantage of the Dynamo Mail / Charged strikes. I got a few lucky quick reflections with the coin during this fight too, but I can't do it consistantly.

-Plague Knight - If you're pogoing him as he's rising, you can get "stuck" between him and the ceiling and get about half of his life gone in that one bit. Anchors also works real well in this fight.

-Black Knight (final form) - You can make him skip the fireball part if you deal damage to it during the first few frames, same thing with the weird orbs he shovels at you. If he transforms into the bird in the middle of the stage, you can get twice as many shots in while he's flying around.

-Tinker - Gear one shots his first form. Second form you can stay on top the entire time. Once he's ready to strike, jump on the drill and keep jumping. (it's the same mechanic as the other barber pole things in the level, just faster). His shoulder / flame cannon is a safe spot to land after he crashes into the wall.

-Winter... Guy I forgot the name of - If you have full health, you can deal damage to him while reflecting snowballs in the first phase. After that, you can cheese his AI something fierce. While he's shoveling up and revealing spikes, pogo him and then tease it a little to the right before landing left. He'll do his blocking animation and you can do that over and over and keep him stunlocked that way. Takes a while to get a feel for it, though.

-Water dude - Again, not that much. During boss rush you can pogo off of his head for a while during the part where he's at the top of the screen, but not during his level. His animations are extremely slow, so you can sneak in 2ish shovels / a shovel and a strike inbetween most of his animations.

-Propeller Knight - He's actually considerably different between the two times you fight him. The main part of both is the same, though. Stand at about max distance for his fencing stab, and pogo him. You can usually get two without taking damage. When he blows you in the air, you can safely pogo him if you hold to the right or left just enough to not get stabbed. During his cannonball/bomb phase, you just pogo as he swings through. You might actually be able to get a charge swipe off and take advantage of boss' invincibility frames making being inside of them not do damage.

-Final boss - First form there's not much. Spamming anchor, reflecting shots, etc. The second form, though. If you pogo twice off of shield knight in succession you'll be high enough to pogo off of her head. You can get three in, and then she'll rage to the left or right (the opposite of whatever side you're on.) You can charge a power swipe and hit her with that also on the way down.

That's all I remember right now.

Beat this earlier today.. LOVED IT!! So happy I backed it and it's now in my possession. Can't wait to do a NG+ run or challenge runs. :D The gameplay, the story, the music (THE MUSIC!), all the elements.. Man.. It's just a stellar god damn game. Kudos to Yacht Club Games. Can't wait to see what they do next.

Just finished the Explodatorium. Nothing particularly interesting in there, but those birds carrying the vials were annoying as hell. Plague Knight was a fun fight though. Reflecting his bombs back was boss.

Finished just now with 106 deaths. What an awesome game. Controls are tight, the music is awesome, and the game is hard but not ridiculous hard. It has challenges but with a few tries you can manage to overcome them.

I had 2 stage with 14 deaths and they were the most that I died in a single stage. What about you guys how many deaths you guys had in a single stage?

Tinker Knight was really easy, especially compared to Propeller Knight. The ice dude has the coolest pre-battle exchange though.

It's amazing how much personality they put into these characters who you only see for a minute or two.

What would you guys like to see in a sequel? New Knights, or mostly returning knights with more character added to them? Another 8-bit styled game? Or maybe something different?

Also, Shovel Knight outta be in DiveKick, with The Baz being in.

A 16-bit Super Shovel Knight sequel would be amazing.

I discovered a glitch in the Wii U Version...

The Halfway Achievement activates when you beat 4 Knights, however, it actually activated for me when I only beat 3 Knights---because I battled Plague Knight twice because I missed the Relic.

Speaking of which, so annoying you have to re-battle Bosses if you go back to find missing Musical Charts/Relics. I missed a Musical Chart in Treasure Knight's stage and I'm like, fuck that.

If you miss a relic, the guy in the basement of the town will have it for you to purchase.

What do you want it to do, collect itself? Game is meant for replays.

I wish the game would tell you which stages you've gotten all the music sheets in, and which ones you haven't. I'm missing a few sheets and I have absolutely no clue where to start looking.

I know, but I mean this is one of the few games I recall where you have to re-fight bosses if you revisit a level for collectibles which is annoying.

Goddammit! I just lost 10000 of my coins dying multiple times! :-/

Love this game though!

Plague knight stage music is amazing!!

We don't even have the 3DS or Wii U one in EU yet. EU, always getting fucked over.
i just don't want to buy the game on PC, game seems the perfect fit for handheld gaming, im gonna wait it out a few months to see if there's any news about it, if not than PC version it is and in the process it could go on sale

Yeah, I love it. It's one of two tracks done by Manami Matsumae, who is best known for her work on Mega Man. The other track she contributed is Treasure Knight's stage.

You have to admit, this will still be pretty challenging to 100% the feats. :P

Boss rush is really easy if you have the purple armor w/ two red Igors and max everything. Beat it on my first try no problem.

Just beat it. Played without checkpoints or using that busted-ass phase item.

This game is okay. Of all the modern platformers that aim for an 8-bit aesthetic, this is probably the one that comes closest outside of Rockman 9 & 10. Save for some overall minor inconsistencies (some NPCs looking basic and a bunch of visible sub-pixel movement), it looks like a well-done professional widescreen Famicom+ game. And it sounds excellent. The widely talked-about twist in the game's retry structure, the ability to smash checkpoints for cash, is a pretty cool idea on paper, but the stages in the first half of the game are too long and empty to really justify it (it feels like there are way more gems to collect than there are obstacles to worry about). Somewhere around halfway through things get fairly dense, though, and the stages with checkpoint-smashing become pretty enjoyable. I can't imagine how tension-free this game would get without smashing the checkpoints given that the only notable loss with death would be some cash and cash winds up being pretty worthless before the game is through.

I think if the game were a bit more focused (condensed the stages a bit and/or ramped up the difficulty earlier) it'd be in the ballpark of DuckTales.

Okay I knew what system I wanted to get it on but now not so much

Should I get Shovel Knight on my 3DS or Wii U?

Help me out guys and no im not double dipping sorry :(

WiiU. No regrets. I'd dare say its the best way to enjoy the retro experience with the "catcalls" coming from the Gamepad Digger's Diary comments.

Just beat it. Really enjoyed the end sections. I would definitely rate it up there with any NES or SNES classic. Feels just like one.

Just beat the game today. I really, really like it. Gonna go through NG+. Part of me wishes it was a little longer, but honestly, this game is gonna be very replayable. Especially considering the content that hasn't been released yet.

I love how, in an industry full of "retro throwbacks", this game stands out as its own thing. Probably because it doesn't really treat itself as a retro throwback as much as it treats itself as just an NES game that happened to be made today. The devs really understood when to follow the NES formula and when not to. All of the goodness and none of the jank, really. It looks like the game is gonna end up being a success, and I hope it does because I want Shovel Knight 2. I remember watching one of the devs live streams during their kickstarter campaign and they were talking about how if Shovel Knight 2 were made it would be cool for it to be nothing like the original, like how certain NES games like Zelda 2 and Mario 2 were. Personally, I would love that.

(Though I'd rather have Shovel Knight 64. Following the rule of "all of the goodness and none of the jank" for an N64-style platformer would be glorious.)

Holy shit at Propeller Knight's stage. That was incredibly intense lol. I loved it.

Also I managed to beat the first stage while destroying all checkpoints. That was really satisfying. I might actually try to go for the "destroy all checkpoints" achievement. I can't see myself being able to do the "beat the game without dying" one though lol.

This is definitely GOTY so far for me.

any word on other platform releases?

I was listening to the new NVC and they convinced me that i have to buy this game but i dont got a Wii U/3DS and i'm using my school/work Mac for gaming till i get a decent gaming laptop.

After playing the 1st level through on my friend's 3DS I was sold, but on a whim I bought it on my WiiU instead of my 3DSXL & my god am I glad I did...

Dat soundtrack!! Holly hell in glorious stereo home amplification...

Also I have no idea how you could see some of the secrets on the OG 3DS screen... dem babi pixels...

This game's greatness humbles me. Nintendo should step to paying up for an exclusive sequel.

So who is best Knight?

MY vote goes to Propeller Knight. He is a knight and a captain of a mutherfucking airship
and he gets a harem end

This game is so good. HOLY MOLY. I just played it for 4 hours straight. Takes elements from Mario, Zelda, Megaman, and Castlevania and meshes them in the most perfect way.

This game is something special.
