Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

Developers working on VR content are VR enthusiasts and will almost definitely want to update their previous work to support DK2 features, even if just for curiosity's sake.

Anyways, I went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed yesterday and Red Bull had a VR experience for a ride in a Red Bull Air Race. With the DK1, I cant say it was a great experience. It was also a half-assed little setup, with the headset attacked to a pilot helmet and just being quick swapped for new users, no real time being taken to make sure they are situated properly. Mine was actually not pressed that hard to my face and the FoV was quite poor as a result. It was an interesting ride, nice fairly believable cockpit setup and everything, telling people to look right and left to see the wing rudders in action. But the rolling to the left and right wasn't sitting right with me. Wasn't nauseas necessarily but I could feel it was messing with me and would have eventually left me sick feeling if I spent more time in it.

Speaking of nausea, I feel like I've read somewhere that eating ginger root can help curb the feeling of nausea if you eat some before doing activities that would cause nausea. Has anyone tried it in tandem with using the Rift, and can verify the accuracy of that idea? I'd like to have a quick solution for people who get motion sickness if I want them to try my dev kit after it arrives.

To all those waiting for their DK2 delivery/news about the delivery dates, do yourselves a favour and don't expect anything until the very the end of July at the earliest, I remember being in the same boat last year waiting for info about the DK1 shipments, and waited the entire month, I think we finally got some news towards the very end, and then it took another 3 weeks for the damn thing to arrive :)

I guess that's the reasonable way to go about..
What gives me hope is that new orders still have August 2014 as expected delivery date so there shouldn't be much delay if there's any...
But I probably still will start to check my mail hourly starting tomorrow...

This actually does work for me. It doesn't cure it but at least removes that feeling of sickness in your stomach. Unfortunately raw ginger is also incredibly hard to swallow unless you love that raw ginger taste.

I don't know if you'd have much success getting people to eat it after they already feel sick :p

Got some video of the Dragon's Roost dungeon in Wind Waker uploaded:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vXhvacz7bY&feature=youtu.be

Marvel at how I screw up several times in a few spots. Zelda in VR is definitely way slower than normal zelda and much harder to control. But I start getting the hang of it midway through that video and at the very end - like the last things I do, there is a sequence where it all clicks and becomes natural to me and I start doing some more complex motions. It's not the full dungeon, I cut out after one particularly well strung together moment where I grab some sticks after climbing a ladder, then, all while looking across the room at a lantern, never taking my eyes off of it, I jump down, sprint across the room, light the stick on fire, and solve the puzzle. I didn't want to risk my capture PC screwing up and losing the sequence, so I stopped for the day. I'll record the rest of the dungeon later.

Regarding simulation sickness and nausea. I get nauseous really easily. I can't read in a car. I can't do roller coasters without feeling terrible afterwards for at least an hour. Killzone 3 on my big screen even made me nauseous from time to time. The original Rift DK made me terribly nauseous as well. I couldn't last more than a few minutes in that thing. At E3 I played the DK2 twice. One five minutes session, and one ten minute session. I also played Morpheus once. DK2 never once made me feel queasy or disoriented. There was an amazing feeling of presence though. In Eve Valkyrie, I remember seeing an enemy pass me but with a much lower altitude. I remember as I went to dive deeply for the chase I had this oh shit! wow moment despite the lack of g-forces. I also got to play Luckys Tale for 10 minutes straight and never once felt even a bit of sickness, even after I walked away from the booth. I didn't want to stop and I knew I could have gone on for a long time. Unfortunately with Morpheus I did feel a bit sick afterwards, but nothing as bad as when I used the Rift DK1. Sony is gonna have to work hard to up their refresh rate, and enforce high locked frame rates no matter the quality hit in order to improve. They also need to expand their FOV. I did feel like the SDE was less on Morpheus...not sure if it was the optics, but it looked good. Anyways I can't guarantee that DK2 with a $2000+ PC and amazing frame rate solves nausea for everybody, but it certainly did for me at E3. And that basically make Oculus the winner of E3 for me. I can't wait to play EVE Valkyrie again. It was my game of show!

Ginger root isn't necessary, ginger biscuits will do just fine.

So, there's no source for the rumour? Last I heard, mid-july was most likely. I got an order in about 2 hours after they went on sale so I'm hoping to get one in the first few batches.

Yep, these helped my girlfriends mum out during chemotherapy.

I placed my order in March 19, 2014 at 09:12 AM PDT. When did they start with the order page?

Got it, the page was up @ 08:05 AM PDT. So I'm not late.

the fact that the preorder site still says 'August' (and only changed to that fairly recently), would suggest to me that they'll fulfill orders a lot more quickly compared to the relative trainwreck that was DK1. That is also something helping me relax and hold off on buying. I think I can wait to hear initial impressions and then decide - especially based on performance (have a 7950 so might be a little underpowered) - and if I pull the trigger I still wouldn't need to wait too long.

Somehow I still have an order in, even though I didn't get around to upgrading from the GTX 580. I hope there are some simple-ish demos that I can run well while I wait for the next-gen cards.

I'm not sure we'll hear anything more than "We're still on track to ship this month" but I can dream.

8:59 AM here. I know there were people here ahead of me too, but I figure everyone who got in in the first couple of hours should be in the first batch. Hopefully we'll find out sooner rather than later.

How big is a "batch" though? I got in two minutes after you, but I'm in Tokyo, so I really don't know if mine will come early or lumped in with some afterthought batch destined for Asia.

well, last time around I knew I wasn't going to be in the first batch. this time the batches are meant to be bigger. I wouldn't stress too much. this is the second time they're going through the process and they definitely got better at it as time went on. not to mention the facebook money behind them now.

I thought Japan was supposed to be the first batch, and the United States were not until second or third?

I have a GTX460 and I hope that most of the demos will run just fine with a bit lower settings. God damnit, maybe I should just buy a cheap used GTX770 or something right now and upgrade to GTX880 when CV1 comes out.

WORST TIMING:

I just checked my email account and saw a UPS MyChoice email! ...which notified me that UPS is going to change the format of such emails.

I need to use a different credit card than the one I used for the $50 charge earlier in the year. I'm on the account info page but don't see anywhere to add/change my payment method.

I ordered on March 19, 2014 at 10:05 AM PDT... keeping my fingers crossed that i'm in the first batch!

Hopefully my GTX 670 will be good enough to run some games and demos at decent settings. Don't wanna upgrade my card until the consumer version is out.

Japan is first batch. United States and Canada come second I'm guessing. Then Europe then rest of the world.

ouch! I'm in Europe :(

You want a solid framerate as close to the refresh rate as possible for the best experience. The 580 couldn't really provide that in all demos for DK1, so I have no doubt that it won't be able to for DK2 either. I'm definitely hoping to wait out the next gen cards though. I just need it to last me a bit longer.

A 460 might be....rough :/

If they're waiting till the first of July to announce when they're shipping (in July), it's probably not going to be early July. My guess, the 20th something. Not too far off, only a few more weeks, hopefully.

This is what I was thinking as well. The kid in me of course wants it to be starting tomorrow in regards to shipping, but realistically (and based on how DK1 announcing/shipping was handled) I'm betting late July to early August for the first wave to start shipping.

At least their production seems improved this time around, DK1 kickstarter shipping was a fucking trickle if you weren't in the first wave. I don't think anything compares to the hype and anticipation I had on the day I knew mine was arriving. Literally opened my apartment door like two seconds after the UPS guy knocked lol. I did happen to be standing in the kitchen at the time which is like two steps from the door, still didn't stop the UPS guy from giving me an "okay then" look.

I feel like DK2 is gonna be kind of a ho hum experience for me until I do another upgrade, which unfortunately will probably be a few months after I get the DK2. Still using a 7850 which has served me well for most demos and games on the DK1 (well, except for Senza Peso, thx UE4!) but yeah not really expecting to hit that 75 fps @ 1080 unless its basic Unity scene demos. Come to think of it, not even sure of Unity anymore what with the new version with new effects and lighting. It will be interesting to see what my mileage is gonna be until I can get a 780.

Would a third-person free look mode be possible? Like lucky's Tale?

I go into third person quite a bit in the video actually, but yeah you can play normal wind waker, without the first person view, and it's fine. I'm trying to upload a mario galaxy video that shows a 3rd person view.

Best news I read today: Senza Peso has a DK2 build that'll be available day 1 when DK2 arrives. I am so stoked to see that in a higher resolution.

I was under the impression they are using distribution centres in other countries so I cant see why they would be sent in different batches (other than the order number). They confirmed they have a distribution centre here in Australia and that's why were getting slugged GST costs.

That's what I'm hoping. Most of the stuff I've looked at has come directly off the Oculus site, I kind of consider those to be the "hardcore", especially guys like KNL that clearly take their VR seriously. You don't just "throw together" something like Senza Peso.

Funnily enough, Senza Peso wasn't a VR project until the end. K&L is a visual effects studio, Senza Peso was just another visual effects project they were adding to their portfolio. Near the end of their production, they got a dev kit and decided to work in some VR functionality, and it went viral.

That said, Epic has already said a DK2 version of Senza Peso already exists.

what exactly is it about DK2 that requires greater performance than DK1? honest question.

Yeah, I know Senza wasn't originally meant for that (I saw the original short film as well, and it has almost nothing in common with the VR experience), but that's not their only foray into VR. I like having folks like them around that will give us something different and wonderful. I think VR goes way beyond just gaming. It just needs to get out there so more people will make more stuff.

Higher refresh rate too. 75 Hz from 60 Hz of the Dk1.

That doesn't necessarily mean it has higher requirements, just that it has a higher ceiling. 60hz on DK2 isn't worse than 60hz on DK1, in fact Durante pointed out that it would be better due to strobing and such.

Oh I completely agree. I think that's where this thing will ultimately move, too. The future of VR isn't necessarily games, but more experiences. It's going to really become it's own medium.
