2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Hey just wanted to give you an update just incase your still wondering about Dolphin running on ur machine. I tried out Wind Waker on mine which has the 4700HQ and it runs fine, 60fps at the least for me but some games I guess wont work as well. Im gunna try some more and see but so far Wind Waker and Xenoblade have been great on it. Good thing too because tbh I wasnt even thinking about processor speed when looking for a laptop to purchase.

Man, I need a favour if possible, could you please try Mario Galaxy 2? With LLE option so that the music keeps going?

I am really interested to know how it performs on i7 4700, Hopefully at 60fps.
Else, i'll wait for Intel's broadwell CPUs.

You see, Asus is going to release a new GX500 Gaming laptop line, and I'm super interested in getting one :) unfortunately not many CPU options, as it seems CPU/GPU will be soldered on the mother board :L

I will be getting a Gaming laptop for emulation first and of course PC gaming.

Wow, that's great. Thanks!

Guys, while under load, the i7-4700s run at 3.2GHz on all four cores. The 2.4Ghz is a lie.

So, I have been looking at slim and somewhat powerful laptops. Im a bit confused between GIGABYTE P35W v2-CF1 and the MSI GS60 GhostPro-052

Now, the main difference from what I notice is that the 870 on the Gigabyte has 6 gb ram vs the 3 gb ram on the MSI. Is that really a big deal? Personally, I want the MSI but I would rather go for the better performance machine. However, I would also like a better screen. Im not sure which one has a better screen.

Help me gaf, Im not really a PC gamer person but I have the opportunity to get a new laptop and I might as well get a nice slim one.
1. 3GB VRAM is about all the VRAM this card can be expected to use.

2. Both laptops feature IPS displays, so you can't go wrong there.

Hey guys! I have been thinking about a new laptop for quite some time now, and I decided I need to figure out what my options are.

I'm from the Netherlands, and I would like to keep my budget between 500-1000 euros.
I currently have a 15,6 inch laptop, which seems like the ideal size to me. Weight doesnt really matter.

If possible I would like it to run Rome 2 Total War rather smoothly, and perhaps Chivalry Medieval Warfare on higher settings.

Hope you can help me out!

Link to Dutch laptop sellers?

Does anyone recommend IC Diamond thermal paste? I was configuring the GS60 on Xotic PC and I noticed that was an option for the thermal paste.

I'd probably pay the extra.

I got this one last saturday. Loving it so far, and it runs everything so smooth:

However, it is a 17 inch laptop. But it's weight is great ( only 3kg's ).

So I bought this computer:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314535

I think the 840m graphics card isn't working and it's using integrated thus even on Borderlands 1 I can't get past 15fps at max graphics. Additionally, when I try to upgrade my Nvidia Drivers in case that turns it on, I get this message:

The graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.

Is my computer weaker than I thought it was, or am I a dingdong?
Any help would be appreciated.

Oh right, the Netherlands. The GE60 is 1049 Euros. It's out of stock at this store, but you'll find it somewhere.

Look in the Nvidia control panel. Find borderlands.exe and set it to run on the Nvidia GPU

I did that, and I'm still getting 15fps in Borderlands with medium-low settings, despite getting 30 fps in BL2 with nearly maximum settings. is this game just poorly optimized?

Ah, thank! I'm probably going to go with the MSI as I heard the build quality is slightly better.

So the y50 looks sick.

They have one with a UHD 4k display for about 200 more, but its only a 860m 4gb. wouldnt I just be better off getting the standard 1080 or would there be benefits to getting the 4k?

Pardon my lateness, but be warned that reports are coming in that the 4k Y50 only has a 48Hz refresh rate. I personally don't value crispness and colour gamut over the refresh rate, but that might be because I value my fighting game hobby over my career as a graphics designer, lol.

That said, I am very satisfied with my base Y50 that I've had for two weeks. Game performance exceeds my expectations, temperatures are as low as I've seen on a gaming laptop, speakers are amazing, chiclet keyboard feels as good as my old Sony Vaio (which I thought would be a tall-order), form-factor is ideal, and it didn't break the bank: $1035 CDN for me after discounts.

Would I have liked a better screen with superior viewing angles, more-vivid colours and that didn't add ~1.5 frames of extra input lag compared to my Asus VH236H? Sure, but at this price, that's a sacrifice I can take and even remedy with an external monitor half the time. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying my TressFX-haired Lara Croft too much to care.

Every time I attempt to install it, I'm presented with:

The graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.
Hmm could be corrupted or a registry error? Have you tried completely uninstalling the current driver?

If that doesn't work, you should try having Windows 8 reinstall itself.

Wow, yeah, I'm reading up on that now. It's strange because the Razer Blade is something like 3200x1600 w/ 60Hz refresh rate.

That's a deal breaker.

Aaaand, now I have no drivers at all. :(

Dangit: Apparently Acer only allows their custom versions of Nvidia software on some computers.

Now I gotta figure out how to turn on 3d vision.

The Blade is lower res than 4k, it's 4 X 900p whereas 4K is 4 X 1080p.

Does Acer have drivers on their site?

My only other recommendation is that you perform a clean install.

Was about to order and just saw this.

I think I'm gonna still go for it, I'll test the waters. I've never been a huge hz/fps snob so unless its incredibly jarring I'll see if I can deal with it. I'll definitely let everyone have impressions once it arrives.

The leap in GPU performance required to handle the huge leap in resolution (1080p to 2160p is huge) but also keep up with advances in visual quality, and power restrictions! we are at least a year, possible a bit more, from genuine mobile GPUs being up to scratch.

Hey guys, I just wanted to see if there were any laptops I could get for a decent price before building a desktop that will do what I want. Here's what I'm looking for,

USA
Max Budget is 1000$, but preferably lower
I would like to run Dolphin and PS2 emulators, as well as run other games at around medium settings, if not higher, however I am not too heavy a AAA gamer, so it's not terribly important for me to be able to run the latest graphically intensive games.
I would like it to be no more than 15.6", and I guess as light as it can be. Good battery life is pretty good too, but I know all of these things = a super expensive laptop, so battery life is more important than portability i guess.

any help is appreciated! if the laptop route doesn't pan out I was thinking of building a desktop and getting a tablet or macbook air maybe? I'm not sure what the best route for that would be, but that's for another time and a different thread.

I'll say we're two generations away, simply because mobile GPUs have such tight TDP restrictions. We're topping out at a little over 100W right now. If that remains the cap, 20nm Maxwell won't pack the power for 4K. Well, maybe you could do last-gen games ad emulation, but not what's coming in the PS4/X1 cycle.

Well, how often would you be gaming away from a desk at home? If you don't need portable gaming, the desktop is a better route. The need for a portable laptop, and the need for a portable gaming laptop, are two different things.

Not very often. I'm in College, so I wouldn't be away from my dorm for very long unless I was studying abroad or on Winter/Spring/Summer break. The main reason for the laptop would be to bring to class and/or watch movies and browse the internet in bed too, but I could do all that with a tablet as well

Hey everybody. I have an Asus F450 JF which runs great, but I'd really like to get another 4 GB of RAM (currently have 4GB). 2 questions:

1: Do all Asus laptops have an extra ram slot for DIY?
2: Are there any compatibility requirements I need to consider before buying the RAM?

I've tried researching this on Google but most sources are a little unclear (or I'm stupid). I've also tried removing the base off the laptop to take a look inside but it was too difficult for me so I stopped since I didn't want to break anything (or again, I'm stupid and didn't remove all the screws).

The task manager says I have 4 slots which I believe is false but I'm not too sure, and some websites out there say that the RAM that comes with the laptop is soldered on so I can't just buy an 8GB and replace the 4GB with that.

Sorry if wrong thread and thanks in advance for any answers!

I can answer the first question. No. Not all asus laptops have extra ram slots. source: Mine only had one, non upgradeable.

For PS2/GC/Wii Emulation = You need a POWERFUL CPU!

I think this one is perfect for your needs $969 - 15.6" (You could upgrade the CPU to Core™ i7-4810MQ (2.8GHz - 3.8GHz) for total of $1002. ;)
http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7358-clevo-w350ss-eta-march-p-6991.html?wconfigure=yes

Else, if you want a 13.3" powerful gaming laptop $988
http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7338-clevo-w230ss-eta-march-p-6992.html?wconfigure=yes

Both come with GTX 860M (Gets around 5000 in 3Dmark11) which is perfect for this price point.

Any of you guys heard anything about ASUS g751? I literally just picked up a 750 yesterday. I can't find any info on it except the rog forums now lists it as a model along with a gx550 which is some sort of ultrabook gaming laptop apparently according to a post there.

do you know what the battery life is on those?

Since I know absolutely nothing about computers I figured this would be the best place to ask. I need a cheap replacement laptop for school for a little while.

I live in the U.S. and want to try and keep it under 500 as much as possible. The only games I'm worried about playing right now are Minecraft and maybe Starbound, so hopefully I wouldn't need anything to great.

Hello everyone! I'm in the market for a new laptop at the moment, due to a robbery at my house. My problem though is that I can't seem to find info for my sort of specific desire out of one.

Basically, I only really would like one that can emulate PS2 and GC somewhat reliably. It wouldn't need to run every game possible at 1080p/60fps, I'd like to emulate some of my PS2 games like FFXII IZJS at 720p on my TV.

I'm an American (op requires country of residence) and my price range is kind of iffy. This is a gift from a very kind hearted, compassionate couple who are friends with my mom. They felt terrible about the robbery, and have insisted that they want to replace my computer and "price is no object"

That said, I'd honestly feel terrible if I took advantage of their compassion too heavily. So I'm going to say that the max is $900, but I'd definitely prefer something WAAAAY lower if it did what I posted above.

Got an update from ASUS about the 751. Apparently they announced it by accident there on the forum. Guy said it's a minor update that is many months away. Looks like they took the model# down from the forum now.

Was looking at the Sager Clevos because I'm looking for a good mix of gaming and battery life for school work and on xotic it looks like they dont come with OSes (No Operating System [Drivers & Utility Software Only (Windows 7 & 8.1)] ) So I suppose I'd need to add in an OS as well. Better to stick with w7 or is w8.1 in an acceptable state? Or should I just grab an OS off like Newegg and get the system without one?

Edit: hmm clevos are supposed to be pretty loud reading up...any recommendations for something reasonably quiet? Looking for a rig that can play say FFXIV and dota2 reasonably well but also somewhat quiet for library/classroom use.

Sorry for the dumb question, but how much do you guys think I can sell my Lenovo Y510P for

i7-4700MQ
SLI 750m
8gb ram
1080p display

version

The system is flawless, no scratches or blemishes. Really the only problem with it, is all the damn finger prints the casing on the outside seems to get with the slightest touch haha.

Hi..

I'm from the UK and have a budget of around £750. I really need a machine as a desktop replacement. It should be able to run games at a decent lick and occasional 3D modelling and rendering.

I've looked at pc specialist with the Vortex 4 as well as the Optimus 5. Does the extra 2GB gfx ram make a difference? Or does anyone else have recommendations?

Thank you

Damn. Is the 860M a Maxwell? I'm thinking of getting one of these instead of an Ultrabook. I guess the only things I'd be missing out on are battery life and a backlit keyboard. I don't really care about it being tiny/thin.

Yep it's Maxwell.

It actually has a backlit keyboard though.

How's the 860m compared to SLI 750m?

860M is equal, if not a tad bit faster. it also consumes less power than a single 750M.

My Y470 screen was damaged when I fell from my bad. My iPad fell down on the floor and instead of getting up, I decided to try to reach for it and fell on a pair of shoes and the laptop. There's no apparent physical damage but the LCD screen is all psychedelic now. I tried to see if it were a loose connection but it doesn't appear to be.

I've been eyeing a Clevo or Y50. My brother keeps trying to convince me to replace the screen of the Y470. The thing is out of warranty.

I suppose I'd like to spend less than 1.3k if possible. I'm ok going slightly higher since Ill ideally be using it for 4 years but it will definitely be a hybrid machine for study/school first and like I stated dota2/ffxiv in the spare time so ideally I guess, 15" or less (was looking at the 13" clevo but not sure if ill need an optical drive which that doesn't have) and mostly quiet when not gaming.

Summary:
1.3k budget
15" or less
Quiet in non-gaming mode
FFXIV/Dota2
w7/w8.1 I dont know enough to make a concrete preference here.

I would say go with Asus G550JK

Recently announced, and just released.

Look at this thing! Sexy (*_*)
G550JK_06.jpg

And I can tell you from experience, Asus laptops are reliable (at least the ones I used).

It starts at $1066
For $1300 you could get a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD in there :D

Note: The CPU/GPU are soldered on the motherboard, so beside the HDD/RAM, it is unfortunately not possible to upgrade :L
Though im not sure if you're even into upgrading...also, lets not forget, you get it all in a super slim design (check out some Youtube videos).

Planned usage: It's not really for gaming (I play a bit of Steam games, but I'm not really a big PC gamer). I need this laptop mostly for 3D modeling/rendering (SketchUP, Revit, VRay, etc.), Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, things like that. Also a laptop which actually looks "nice" would be great. (Oh, and a backlit keayboard is a plus!)

I really need a new laptop (the one I have is 4 years old) and I'm currently looking at this one. Googling the specs, it seems the Geforce GT 840M isn't that great...?

EDIT: This one seems a lot better for the same price. (Even if I'm not a fan of how it looks).

Well, a DIY screen replacement would cost less than $200.

FFXIV/Dota2
w7/w8.1 I dont know enough to make a concrete preference here.

edit: make that a Y50.

It seems like it only has an 850M in there, though.

And it's a DDR3 850M. Pass.

There's been a lot of talk about how poor the color reproduction is on the Y50's screen, so that may be an issue for your needs.

What do you guys recommend between the Lenovo Y50 vs the Lenovo Y510P?

I also would appreciate suggestions for other comparable laptops around the same price range.

Y50, easily. There's also Clevo/Sager in that price range.

I'd get a Y40.

.

Doesn't the y40 have a 8870m equivalent which would be worse than a 850m?

Guess I'll look between the y40 and y50 and see. Basic searching through notebookreview/tom's etc seems that y40 is better keyboard build quality (less flex) and better battery life but the cpu/gpu seem to be quite a few steps down from the y50?

Budget: around 800 Euros, can be more if it's worth it.

I live in Greece but I'll move in the UK in September, hence the laptop purchase. Maybe I will find better/cheaper options there?

Interests:

-Reliability (it will be my work as well as entertainment laptop), hence I was thinking about a Thinkpad, with a not too crappy separate GPU.

-Descent gaming capabilities. I don't care about high resolution, and for the budget I know I can't get too good of a performance, so I guess a 740M would suit me fine. Am I mistaken? Ideal for me I think would be a 765M, but the only laptops with this card here are 900-1000 euros (which I could give) but they are from the "Clevo" manufacturers in Greece. They name their products Turbo-X and I have never ever ever trusted them.

How does this look for 850?

LENOVO THINKPAD EDGE E531 N4I8GRI

15.6" Anti Glare Full HD LED Backlight, 1920 x 1080.
Intel Core i7-3632QM (2.20 GHz) με 6 ΜB L3 cache.
8192MB (2 x 4096 MB) DDR3 @1600 MHz, up to 16 GB.
Nvidia GeForce GT 740M με 2 GB independent memory
1 TB SATA, 5400 rpm.
DVD+/-RW DL.
1 x USB 2.0, 2 x USB 3.0, 1 x External Display (VGA) 1 x HDMI, 1 x RJ-45, 4 in 1 card reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC), audio/headphone combo.
6 Cells Li-lon.
Free DOS.
2.44 kg.
377 x 250 x 25 mm.

The CPU is admittedly not too great, but it is a Thinkpad.

Btw how are the Intel CPUs with the U suffix at the end? (i.e. 4200U instead of 4200M)

Oops, I should've said Y50, not 40.

Yeah the Y40 is far weaker, not recommendable for serious gaming.

I would not be afraid of the Clevos. PCSpecialist in the UK is very reliable.
