Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for iOS looking likely for Western release [Up: Out now]

Does this game support controllers? With HDMI out this is actually tempting...

Supports the apple MFI controllers, so you need to spend at least £60 for one right now which is a bit rich.

iPhone 5 framerate is for what I can tell 30fps, HDMI out on a 5 uses the same compression tech as airplay so you should get the same results over an apple tv, but with a few extra frames of lag due to the wireless.

I wish there was a demo. I'm really skeptical about the controls, and I don't want to get a controller for it.

I think I'll wait for a demo or a sale.

Plays far better than it did on the PSP if you are used to virtual controls.

Capcom was pretty smart about, and it plays better than one would expect.

If you can jailbreak your device you can use a DS3 still.

There should be a new wave of controllers for iOS coming this fall, but who knows they might also be £60 a pop.

Just had some awesome games online with a dude who knew where to go, the game is fast paced when you know your goals with 4 people.

I bit the bullet since I love MHFU. I'm not a big fan of touch controls so I will prob pick up a controller on sale, but it looks REALLY nice and clean. I was kinda surprised.

This port is brilliant. I did not expected this from Capcom.

You would think virtual controls couldn't possibly work for MH, but amazingly, it does work. The controls are leagues better than they were on the PSP, and arguably better than 3G on 3DS without frankeinstick (on iPad Mini at least). Of course, if you absolutely despise touch controls, I don't see how this would change your mind, but the way Capcom implemented the controls is genius. The only way to make it better is to allow manual placement of the buttons, but this is a small gripe.

Visually, it looks amazing too, and it runs smooth as butter (60 fps), which arguably makes this version the best portable version of Monster Hunter to date until the arrival of MH4 around here. I can't wait to play MHFU multiplayer for the first time.

For those who know the game already, where do you hand in 'a mushroom goldrush' ? I have the mushrooms but no npc anywhere on the map apart from an old guy who just gives you random items when you talk to him.

Great game but I wish some stuff was clearer to work out.

*edit* ok so you have to go to the item in your inventory, pick it and select deliver... that's weird.

What is wrong with Capcom? I don't know what to say anymore. They're porting the best MH to smartphones, instead of giving Sony and MS consoles a new installment.... or just MH4. I don't care about an MMO which is going to be available in Asia only anyway.

Please don't tell me this port has full online support.

It does. It's the complete package and then some.

I'm all for a new installment for consoles though. Or at least MH4 with non shitty visuals.

I don't understand Capcom. If they were to release a MH with decent content, visuals and full online support to other consoles (WEST) too, not just on Nintendo, they would sale millions of copies. I'm pretty certain of that.

That's not how I remember it... usually to deliver things you'd just go to camp and put them in the red box.

Nah, the gameplay of MH is quite polarizing. It would be an uphill battle for it to become a big seller.

The lack of support for iPad2 makes me and my iPad have a very estranged relationship starting right now. :(

Yeah, agreed. I did, however, find some validation (e.g. comment on a review) that iPad 2 users CAN install this on their device using iFunbox.

The comment (from banned site) was:

It runs totally smooth on iPad 2. But you will have to buy it with iTunes on your PC and install it with iFunbox to bypass the restrictions.

Admittedly, never have used iFunbox but will actually be giving it a go tonight to see just how "totally smooth" it might run on my 2.

Not in the west I'm afraid.

Still very niche.

At least Capcom has localized MH3 for WiiU/3DS and brining MH4.

The problem is, the budget needed to have "decent" visuals for this game and the fact that the gameplay isn't mainstream means that the amount of copies they'd have to sell to make money would be more than a few million. And the sales of Japanese version couldn't help much to reach the stale's target do to how consoles are going over there.

I can imagine the casual gamer not to be interested in this franchise. But I know many people who would definitely buy it. You're probably right. I can't really judge it since my perspective is quite subjective and blurred by the fact of the majority of my friends being hardcore gamers.

I'm going to give the game a shot before I get a controller. anyone want to play tonight hit me up. I have a bunch of MH experience but don't mind helping people learn the ropes.

They are already selling millions of copies and MH games are top notch. Did you miss the note?

As they have already said, if they were to do something different, it wouldn't be called Monster Hunter, but something else.

Maybe you should have bought Dragon's Dogma.

The U port of 3 looked fine, a similar HD Remix of 4 at 60fps, 16x AF, and ample AA would more than hold its own against all the digital/indie titles and many of the cross-gen ports on PS4 and Xbone. I don't know about millions of sales, but the game would (worst case) generate a small profit (as the work could be farmed out to a smaller studio for next to nothing) and would be a worthwhile investment/gamble in (potentially) building the brand in the west. Similar to Dragon's Dogma PC and PSO2, it's best not to ask why when JP corps are involved cause reason and logic play little part in their decision making.

Looks pretty nice. Much better than the ugly PSP version.

yup! I was surprised how good it looks. its actually getting me to replay MHFU from the beginning which is something I never thought I would do.

getting used to the controls varies depending on weapon. I usually use great sword but it was weird getting used to the timing of changing up swings. bow controls also seemed awkward. hunting horn felt awesome though so I'll be playing online and buffing newbies.

I hate touch controls but its actually playable once you get past the learning curve.

You never played Monster Hunter on Wii U? It has online and is pretty damn awesome

One could say the same about the Souls series.

With some smart marketing it could work but it has to be on console and not only on the wiiu. The series needs to go multiplat or it will never happen in the west.

Got this working on my iPad 2 by installing via iFunBox. Works flawlessly on it, too.

So far - eh. I'm not a big fan of touch controls and it's been fairly painful adapting. Whereas Unite on my PSP / Vita I can zip through menus, organize everything, etc - doing everything just takes a little bit too much time.

Like the little contextual buttons they have for climbing and carving and the like. Also interesting how they mapped different attacks by sliding the attack button up or down.

Not sure about the camera. Obviously it's implemented the best (only?) way possible but argh touch controls!!

Also several hundred hours on each MH game since Freedom 1 and yep - got ganged up by Anteka in my first quest and carted once. Really have to get used to controls.

It definitely is very pretty on the iPad screen, I'll give it that!

Downloaded on my iPad Air and played some yesterday, and I'm absolutely loving it. Touch controls work incredibly well, the graphics are nice enough (framerate appears to be locked at 30 FPS), and most importantly, the game is incredibly fun (this is my first time playing a MH game).

Capcom really made a great port. And regarding price, I see that some people see it as a bit high for a mobile game, but I'd rather pay $15 once, than get the game for "free" or a few bucks and later learn that it's a title riddled with IAP.

When it comes to MH, you pay $15 once, there is no IAP whatsoever, and you get a game which you can play for 100+ hours. Money well spent, I'd say.

If there are still people on the fence, my advice is, jump over, MH is totally worth it. I hope Capcom brings MH3 to iOS eventually and I hope other devs consider porting older PS2, PSP, NDS and 3DS titles to iOS.

Fuck I'm gonna play the shit out of this when I get my iPad Mini back. It should run well, right? Is the game 30 or 60 fps?

On iPad Air, it's locked to 30 FPS. My guess is that it will be the same on your Mini. It's a nice looking game, but there are far better looking games than MHFU, so it shouldn't be that demanding (and the game is split into a bunch of small areas). After all, it's a port of an old PSP/PS2 game.

Excellent! Odd that they didn't go with 60fps since the PS2 ran it at that framerate(?) :(...

Is this a good MH to start off with?

I'm still in the fence.

So the controls sound decent. But I'm currently playing through MH3U on Wii U, is there any point in starting another one? Maybe just because its portable?

Yeah, too bad it's not at least unlocked frame rate (or with an option to unlock it), but it's perfectly solid 30 FPS with no dips whatsoever.

My guess is that this is a great MH to start with since it's cheap, there is no IAP, there is 100+ hours of content, controls have been perfectly modified for touch interface and the graphics have been upgraded from PSP version.

Hoping for MH3 one day!

A few small things which annoy me a bit:

Monsters you take down sometimes dissapear after only a few seconds of being left alone, if you are fighting two monsters you need to loot you usually don't have time to loot the first downed enemy, should not be any reason for mobs fading away with the ram these phones have.

Sometimes a monster will hit you into another area, nothing too bad but it sucks.

Good thing about the 30fps limit is that the battery lasts a little longer, if you are playing offline you can easily get 2+ hours out of a full iPhone 5 charge, some 3D games on my phone fail to hit that mark because they run at maximum and make my phone feel like it's melting, different story online though the wifi being so active kills the battery much faster.

Looks like iOS players are getting the definitive vesion of MHFU, if you take away the awesome blood effects of the japanese 2nd G version. Full online support for this game is truly admirable and probably the best thing to implement. And if you manage to pair your phone with a DualShock... oh my. This sounds almost too good to be true.
Nah, the gameplay of MH is quite polarizing. It would be an uphill battle for it to become a big seller.
Do you think so? I found the gameplay of MH to be rather simulative. It reminds me to Dark Souls' gameplay. Easy to learn but hard to master. No button mashing but well thought and placed strikes as well as analysis of enemy patterns are key. Also, both franchises are being well received in the west.

They are already selling millions of copies and MH games are top notch. Did you miss the note?

I'm aware of the fact that that MH is one of the top selling franchises in east. I'm just saying that, in my estimation, Capcom would sell considerably more copies if they were to release it on more western platforms than just Nintendo.

Nobody said they should do something different with the franchise. Localizing and porting would be more than enough, imo. I think there's nothing wrong with bringing this masterful franchise to more people, so more can enjoy it and become fans. Let the community grow, Capcom.

I got DD:DA from Playstation Plus, but only played it for some hours though. Still, it's definitely on my list.

This isn't going anywhere so there's reason not to beat MH3U first.

Anyways I wanted to try this to see how the controls work but for some reason my IPhone 4 runs it like a slideshow! Great!

The store page does say that while you can download it on an iPhone 4, performance is not guaranteed :(

Kind of need a dual core or better device, so 4S, iPad 2 and up.
