a question for those who were neutral on both games: Brazil vs Germany or Spain vs Netherlands, what was the most shocking result?

I mean, Brazil took 2 more goals than Spain, but Neymar and Thiago Silva were out, on the other side Spain was the current champion

As a non neutral Dutch guy, I still think GER-BRA was more shocking.

Yesterday happened in 5 minutes, we broke Spain in 80 + ? Also semi final on home turf.

Yeah I mean the team quit after the 0-2. It was a shocking display. Heck when Germany plays the Faroe Islands, I don't expect 7 goals.

Sorry if this is old, but holy shit if this is real:

Why would anyone place a bet like that? I would say you're better off playing the lottery.

This so much.

The Dutch destroyed Spain in the 2nd half but Brazil's demise started at '23 min. and ended at '29 min.

That never happened before.

I root for Netherlands but yesterday's game was far more shocking, I don't know how anyone else could say otherwise. The fact that Germany beat Brazil easily is not shocking in the least, but the style, the manner in which it was done, no way in hell anyone could have predicted it. Moreover, it's the semifinal not the group stage. These things simply don't happen.

It's called backing your team mate. If we lose, we lose, but until we do I will be confident in our ability and our victory. No compromise there. We're not here to lose or draw, we're here to win.

talk like that after your team beats Argentina first, and second germany wants to win too, they have an incredible team that match or excites the NED.

also non neutral for the dutch but nobody expected the dutch to win that game.

I'd say that the dutch win was much more shocking, but the manner in which the germans beat brazil might be the most stunning thing that ever happened at a WK. what a massive beat down. It's without a doubt the more noteable of the 2 events and the one that people will be talking about 10 years from now. The spanish team losing to the dutch in a pool game, it just doesn't have the same level of spectacle AT ALL.

Now when the dutch beat argentina 7-1..... that's gonna be something..

I don't understand this mindset at all. WHY on Earth would anybody not be confident in their team's ability to win? It's insane that you have to show some sort of faux humility on the chance your team might lose.

If they do, they do and if they lose fairly because they faced a better team you can still congratulate and be gracious in defeat, but why be that way before the match is even played? That makes no sense to me, we're in it to win it, not to go "oh well, we're good by ending as fourth too"

I guess this mentality is prevalent now, starting as early as pre-school by giving children medals even if they come in second to last. "It's okay kid, at least you tried."

Nope, Oranje can win and Oranje should win and unless they prove me otherwise I will say they are going to win. Go Oranje!

A german bakery chain promised 1 free bread bun for every german goal.

They are handing out coupons now.

Dutch MediaMarkt had a thing just before the tournament started where you could buy a TV and get a full refund if Netherlands became World Champion. This was before people realized this was actually possible, so I'm not sure how many people took the bait.

Brazil vs Germany 1-7 will be one of the most infamous games in football history for hundreds of years to come, Spain vs Netherlands is insignificant by comparrison and will be long forgotten in a few years time.

For some perspective, the Netherlands have arguably been better than Spain over the years with the exception of Spain's recent incredible 10 year run or so, and it was still a totally plausible score. Yes it was a thrashing but Spain seem to have returned to their usual under achieving reputation and Holland have had some of the greatest teams in history and have a great footballing tradition.

Given the context of the game Brazil vs Germany was the arguably the most devastating loss in the entire history of sports - I can't think of anything that even comes close, I'm not sure if we will ever see anything like that ever again.

are you saying that we should be blindly confident in the team we cheer for? without looking at the competition skills or chances of winning?

I'm saying that any team is beatable by any other team and pretending Oranje is a heavy underdog for no reason other than "being gracious" is dumb.

Besides, I'm not on the pitch, I'm not the coach, I don't have to worry about tactics or who plays and who doesn't. I just have to support my team, that's my task in the grand scheme of a World Cup.

Argentina can win, but they won't because my team is going to win the Cup this year.

Just as Germany destroyed the Portougese speaking countries this World Cup, today Netherlands will destroy yet another Spanish speaking country.

All Euro final will be glorious.

As a non-neutral, I'd say the game between Brasil and Germany was far more shocking. I mean yeah, I was jumping with (unexpected) joy while Oranje was pummeling Spain, but I actually sat with my mouth open during those six minutes of doom. And on their own turf, man that was just scary.Fifty years from now, this tournament might reach a legendary status. Just because of the slaying of Brasil and to a certain degree the match between Spain and Holland.

Meanwhile, I really don't know what to expect. This WC has been a crazy ride so far and here's hoping it won't stop yet.

You sound salty, I just don't know wh.... oh wait :D

the NED are not underdogs by any means, but its strange for me to see that kind of mentality. i guess i am just the calculating type, who likes to assess each team before a match and predict who wins or who posses the most danger(i do that for pretty much everything).

Germany will lead 2:0 by halftime.

Easy win for the Netherlands against Argentina tomorrow.

Final will be brutal.

Quoted for posterity.

LMAO. I will remember this quote so maybe i can come and laugh at it. Easy win? really? you sound like van gaal and belgiums coach, who said argentina was just a normal team. Well, that "normal" team sent them home. Worst thing you can do is to underestimate argentina.

How do you guys feel now?

Awwwwwwwwwww

I'm still a bit in a state of disbelief of what we witnessed yesterday. It will go down in history, maybe not for the right reasons, but in the years to come people will ask: "where were you during the BRA-GER game?"

what if Argentina lose

and then Brazil lose again

I don't think it make a big difference who looses between Argentina vs Brazil. There will be rage, tears and schadenfreude regardless of the outcome of the match, they'll just come from a different place.

You sure he wasn't saying something like 'my other trophy is bigger, I'm staying at room 253'?

Awwwwwwwwwww

I've seen this guy around here many times, what a great photo, awesome

and thanks for the answers guys, a lot of points of view, and I agree yesterday was more shocking. I mean, before yesterday, the only teams that took five goals on the first half were the world class teams of Zaire and Haiti

If that man is at least 60 years old, he's been alive to see Brazil win the world cup 5 times, in 4 different continents. Really no need to feel sorry for him.
Well, I'm Brazilian so it's more that I was already feeling like shit and seeing him added to that.
