Tips on quitting smoking?

Also, I really hate having friends who smoke. One smokes in the car and it pisses me off to no end. I almost feel like I have to hold my breath. He knows I hate it but doesn't care because the addiction is more important than his consideration for his friend.
Heh, you're one of those ex-smokers. The exact type that's so ridiculous that your friend will never be inspired by you to stop smoking.
 
Cold turkey is the only thing that works for me.
Quit twice. First time lasted about 5 years.
But I just got a job with a chainsmoking coworker... one night we were drinking together and I had him lone me a cig... next thing I knew the urges were back.
Again cold turkey, about 2 weeks off so far[even though I never went full on with this 'fall' off of the wagon] It feels harder this time, I have no clue why.
But one piece of advice I'd give is you seriously have to put cigarettes out of your mind. Stop thinking they're okay, or just one more would be cool. That shit will keep you with this habit for life. It's hard, but life's hard, so man the fuck up.
 
Went to a body museum where they said a pack of cigarettes on average takes off 3 hours of your life. They had a bin where people could toss their cigarettes. It was half full.
 
I just stopped. During the summer of 97 when I was 13, I was smoking (rebellious stage, blah blah blah), and just decided to stop. I don't know if my addiction urges were as strong back then, but I've never dared to smoke one since.

When did you start? I mean great job for quitting but I think its a little easier to quit without having years of addiction clawed in.

I was going at it pretty good for a few months, I believe from May to August, and stop right when the school year began.
 
Using e-cigs for about a month helped break both the physical addiction and the sort of behavioral one where I would get restless and go outside for a smoke. I just used the e-cigs indoors and it took care of things.

No cravings or lapses since.

Yeah I'm sorry but you didn't even really start.
I may sound like an ass, but going around all "ooh it wasn't that hard to stop" after 4 months in a thread full of peeps who try to get rid of a 20+ year addiction isn't the best thing to do.

Again, I'm sorry, but yeah. Don't, please.
 
Quit after smoking almost 15 years. I used a combo of e-cigs and patches. Mainly the patches, because the ecigs were hurting my throat. Dont take the prescription pills, they could mess you up.

The only tip that works: You need to want it enough.

I tried a bunch of tactics, I've seen people around me use a bunch of tactics, patches, drugs, therapy, whatever. You name it, I've seen people try it.

Thing is, none of those work because smoking, while addictive physically, is mostly a mental thing. The day I quit, actually quit smoking legit, was the day I said to myself: "What am I doing? I'm wasting money and health for no fucking good reason. Fuck this" and threw my half-empty pack of cigs in the trash and never looked back.

That's all there is to it. You'll never stop craving a cigarette once in a while, but when you get to the point where you're mentally done smoking, it doesn't matter. You're done, you're good.

Until you get to that point, the second you quit smoking and at one point or another get that craving for a cigarette, you'll start smoking again. It just doesn't work without being mentally ready to quit. If you can't quit without "tools" you're simply not ready to quit.

At least, from my experience and from what I've seen around me, this is how it works.
