Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

John Davison is out of work again. By choice or not - dude never seems to stay anywhere more than a couple of years.

Him getting a seat with Garnett is the best thing to happen. It's like the podcast version of Polygon.com - herding together all the people I don't like so they make less noise elsewhere.

Wasn't he at Ziff Davis for a really long time?

He was - but since he left Ziff he has been at

What they Play (2 years, sold to IGN)

Gamepro (1 year)

Gamespot (2 years)

Red Robot/first for gamers (2 years)

It is fair enough. A lot of people move around - just unusual in that industry. He seems to do a decent job wherever he goes.

Some blame him for leaving the GB guys hanging after convincing them to sell - but it sounds like CBS was better in the long run than their other options.

He also gets some blame for turning around Gamepro only for it to die shortly after he left - but print magazines lose money hand over fist so he was likely just prolonging the inevitable.

I wonder if Jonah Hill would have been down with the crew.

Looking at what happened to Gametrailers when they got bought recently, GB got a pretty amazing deal: They got to keep their staff, and continue to do what they do. That's not something you see often when these things happen.

This is a bit of a random aside related to a thing discussed about ten pages ago, but...

The Live Bomb! browser extension for Chrome is going to continue to exist and be in development. If you're interested in contributing your time and effort to help improve it, you can do that on GitHub. If you'd just like to download it, it's still available at the same place on the Chrome Web Store.

As of yesterday's update, it can now display the upcoming schedule beyond the five items shown on the front page of GB. Coming soon will be optional GameSpot live stream notifications and upcoming schedule for any people that might be interested in that.

That's because GB's been doing well in subscriptions and viewership; it's an upward trend.

Things are going to change if GB somehow manages to decline in popularity. And not for the better.

That's literally every business, and would've happened at any other place. So I'm not gonna hold that against CBSi. I'm more talking about their first year at CBSi, they didn't try to mess too much with what GB was doing (or at least Jeff managed to convince them to not do that), and that's a good thing.

Fuck yeah, thanks!

Yup, GB somehow convinced quite a few people to spend money on the internet for an editorial service. In an age of free stuff, that be no mean feat and their continued existence is probably partly down to marketers at CBSi wondering how the fuck they did it.

I mean, we live in a world where people question the $1 subscription increase of Netflix - a dirt cheap service with a ridiculous amount of great content.

I don't know what Patrick is complaining about on that Grim Fandango news post. "Console exclusive" seems pretty clear to me that it would probably come to PC as well.

I think Patrick is suffering from cabin fever. All alone up there. I wish he finds a co-worker to bounce ideas with. It's great he's trying new stuff but it'd be better if he had an editor to cut off some of the crap from this week.

Don't know why you're hating on him. 1UP Yours back in the day was the shit. 1UP during 2006-2008 was the proto-Giant Bomb in some ways.

I'd say his stuff since 1up hasn't been as awesome for sure, but I still have major respect for the man. And he did secure a future for Giant Bomb. I know some people think CBSi is holding back Giant Bomb or something-- but seriously-- they just hired a couple of new guys in an industry where most sites have consistently been laying off or shutting down in the last 6 years (including IGN & Gamespot which have had layoffs).

---

It's strange how Adam Sessler, Garnett Lee, Jeff Green and John Davison are all unemployed-- 4 of the biggest old school names in the industry.

Adam/Jeff aren't unemployed. Not sure about Garnett.

Adam is unemployed as far as I know-- he has a company name but he hasn't actually been hired by anyone (at least since the last time I paid attention to what he was up to).

Garnett definitely is not employed.

Is Jeff working for that company that Greg Ford is working for?

Are they suppose to say also coming out on PC on a Playstation press conference?

What would be a better alternative?

"coming first to PS4" etc is clunky but less misleading. "timed exclusive" is more accurate but I can understand why the platforms don't use it.

It is a marketing term designed to mislead casuals. People in the know learn to read "console exclusive" as a timed deal - or they would have just said "exclusive" - but the general public will just hear "exclusive" and make their and assumptions. It is the video game equivalent of "low fat/fat free" on a lot of food products. Factually accurate but designed to mislead.

To be fair this one does have a straight informative headline, kinda spoils is with the animated gif though.

I take him at his word that he is trying things out. If the click bait articles get more traffic though you might be stuck with them.

I also suspect that Davison chooses when he does and doesn't have a job. I think when he's ready, he won't have any difficulty finding somewhere to go.

.

He didn't sound happy about selling his first company to IGN at the time - sounds like he made out okay but the site was running out of money. Gamepro and Gamepot he definitely walked away on his own terms. This latest one seem more like jumping ship before the VC runs out. He should have no trouble getting another job.

Quick fridge update. The magnets have arrived. The wrapping paper should appear later today. The fridge is on its way, coming either Friday or Monday. There's been a little miscommunication with the dog shelter donation, but that's all sorted out, and that gift pack will be mailed out either today or tomorrow. There's nearly $70 left to cover shipping so with a little luck this insane thing should arrive in time for the UPF after next.

I'm listening to his and Garnett's podcast from yesterday and both have no clue what they are doing next. And John mentioned he can't just try to do something independently anymore because there's not enough money in that for him to keep his current lifestyle.

An aside. I was sick at home the last 2 days and found time to get through the VinnyVania episodes. Man was Vinny needlessly dedicated to replaying that game, lol.

Also, just got a Retron 5. Not really having any cartridge reading problems yet. I did get "unknown cart" from one of the versions of Road Rash I have (the one not licensed by Sega when EA was basically creating pirate carts) but it seems as though its probably just not in the games database, and I haven't updated the firmware yet. I'm really liking it. A few issues:

- They need to fix the way they scale the image. I'm seeing aliasing in panning shots in some games. The way to do it is to oversample 2x and then scale from there. Instead it looks like they are just doing a simple nearest neighbour stretch.
- Scanline support needs to be more robust. Need to be able to decide the weight and intensity of each scanline.
- According to some tests seems like input lag isn't better than just using one of the original systems when it really should be considering they are using HDMI. They need to address this.

So, if all is well, then it should arrive before next week's Friday then. Thanks!

I was thinking in John Davison while listening to episode 400 of Player 1. The dudes talk a lot about having children and playing game. And it was fun. Maybe this is why What They Play site dont worked. The civil people was the target when should be targeting older gamers with children.

Also, it's not like Double-Fine was super deceptive about the exclusivity. We knew it was also coming out on PC before the end of the Sony Conference.

I think What They Play did work though? Well I don't know if John made any money off it but he was able to sell it to IGN and he really had nothing to do with that podcast after he sold it, and What They Play wasn't what it used to be after he sold it either.

Makes sense. VC money has dried up for that sort of thing. Staff positions are getting harder to come by so it makes sense that the higher up positions are going to be in short supply too. JD has the advantage of having worked press and dev, so I could see him taking a dev position.

What they play was meant specifically for non gaming parents. It was doing decent growth when he sold it but that bubble burst along with the Wii.

After completely burning my fuse with Weekend Confirmed I actually questioned myself and how I could have ever liked Garnett back in those 1UP days. It seems almost impossible to me. 1UP crew was pretty amazing but even Mark McDonald is nowadays a mere shadow of himself from those days.

Nice, good job on this.

Patrick's change of tone is weird. I wonder if CBS finally realised they are paying him a full wage to write news stories hours/days later then everyone else and record 2 videos a week.

lol Dan.

Weekend Confirmed had it's ups and downs. The Brian Leahy/Billy Berghammer days were probably the best episodes for it. I think later in it's run when Christian Spicer became a regular it started to get good again (which is why I listen to DLC now).

And how good 8-4 play is, is entirely up to what they talk about. When it's an entire episode about nothing but Japanese RPG's, I don't even bother listening. And when Mark is missing from the 8-4 podcast it also becomes entirely unlistenable to me. 8-4 is super weird-- when they have Cheapy on (and I love CAG) he barely talks so the podcast barely benefits from him being on the show.
