3ds. Should I?!

How are the refurbs?

Anyone with a refurb wish to comment?

I bought a Wii U refurb and it's working great, just want to know if the quality is consistent with the 3DS.

I just got a refurbished 3DS XL from the Nintendo store last week. It looks brand new, and comes with the one year warranty. Definitely the best deal on the market right now.

kinda off-topic...
I'm kinda interested on Tomodachi Life, but I haven't made a proper research because it looks like a crazy and unique game that I want to experience myself...

just a quick question:
does the game works with "real time" like Animal Crossing?. I kinda hate the fact to be doing "chores" at certain times of the day, or being punished for not playing enough. I'm 30 years old and I don't exactly have all the time in the world to play.

thanks and sorry for the little derailment.

There are "events" that occur at certain hours, but nothing you get punished for not doing. If anything, you may miss a chance to get a rare item, or some of the wacky situations like rap battles, miis gossiping or wacky news broadcasts.

You only get a "haven't see you for a while" comment from your miis if you stop playing.

The 13-year-old Nintendo fanboy in me that will never die can't imagine missing out on some of Nintendo's games by not buying one of their systems at some point.

The 31-year-old fanboy agrees so buy the fucker. An XL. You literally can't regret that purchase.

It's the only console I own at the moment (I'm primarily a pc player) and I absolutely love it.

The 3DS is the first Nintendo system I've picked up since the Gamecube. There's a decent library of great exclusive titles which is exactly what I was looking for.

What is this, early 2012? Yeah, of course you should. As for which model, I mean, that's kind of for you decide, isn't it? Do you want a more expensive console with much larger screen and a little better battery life, or something a little cheaper and more pocketable?

As for games, there's Fire Emblem, Bravely Default, Pokémon, Phoenix Wright, 3D Land, Animal Crossing, ALBW, Layton, Pushmo, etc. Take your pick.

I think OP has made their decision. Please stop quoting me.

Well, I don't think that, but most other people do, based on my experience as a college student.

That is because I am really insecure. If I had known posting a simple opinion would elect such a reaction, I would not have posted here.

Sorry for the overreaction.... (me bowing)

But next time post opinion about the console, simply say that you don't like the 3ds.

And not opinion about what do you think other people are thinking about what someone else is doing...... now i'm confused too..... sorry again (me bowing)

Yes, definitely get a 3DS XL.

I purchased one a couple of months ago and I've been loving it ever since. I generally bring it everywhere with me (StreetPass!) and have a decent library on a 16GB SD card. My favourite titles are Fire Emblem: Awakening, Shovel Knight, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

I have numerous other games downloaded that I have yet to play (saving them for an upcoming, lengthy trip...) such as The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Pokémon Y, and more. Needless to say, there are a ton of games worth your time available for the 3DS.

So, yeah. Do it. It's a blast.

I've been meaning to ask this for a while and this is probably the ideal thread for it: is FE Awakening recommended if you normally hate the strategy genre? I like Pikmin, but that's about as far as I go. srpg's look daunting and complex as well, that's why I always avoided the FE franchise. I know Awakening does away with perma deaths, but I don't know how accessible it is for those unitiated or not normally interested in the genre.

I feel the same and wasn't impressed with FE:A. Unnecessarily convoluted menus that defy RPG standards and there's tons of required mechanics that aren't explained in the game at all and need you to check the internet.

SMTIV, SMT Soul Hackers, Kingdom Hearts, and Pokemon.

Yea, the problem is KH is too chlidish for my taste and the SMT combat system based on counters for certain elements is really frustrating and simply put it - dumb :) Unless something changed dramatically since I played Nocturne a couple of years ago :P

3DS is the jam. Get it. A bunch of games worth your time on it, I recommend A Link Between Worlds and Kid Icarus: Uprising.

3DS XL has slightly worse 3D sweetspot but the screen and buttons are infinitely more comfortable to bear.

Don't forget that DS games look infinitely better on the XL when you use 1:1 mode.

I regret buying a 3DS. I am just not interested in the games very much and the games that did interest me were not very good.

Not sexiest hardware but games like Luigi's Mansion, Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, Zelda etc. make it very worth it.

The 3D has better depth on the XL but the smaller screen on the 3DS Original makes the graphics seem a bit smoother.

Target has a great sale tomorrow. $175 for an XL, plus 15% off with their cartwheel app. Combine that with an additional 10% with the movers coupon and a 5% red card bonus and they will be dirt cheap!

I'm grabbing a 3DS with the Target sale tomorrow. Can anyone recommend the best and highest capacity memory card for it?

XL is the only one worth getting imo. Original feels like a child's toy.
Definitely pick up Fire Emblem: Awakening if you bite.

I just grabbed a 32GB off Amazon. Its just your standard flash card so best in this case is just the cheapest one you can find.

Oh, okay. I did not know if I had to worry about failure rates with certain brands/models or if speed was a factor for game performance. I'm a PC gamer so that type of stuff is always in my head but unsure if it applies to consoles.

good god no.

the game is easy as fuck and pair up, the mechanic that will carry you through the game, is explained in detail.

I picked up a black 3DS at a Staples clearance sale. I had downloaded Super Mario 3, Zelda 2, and Mega Man 2 within 10 mins of powering it up. Great fun!

Question: Is there an option to remap the buttons on those old games? I would like to have jump and attack/run/shoot switched in those above games.

Get an XL and AC: New Leaf. Can't believe New leaf is my 2nd most played game of all time slightly lagging behind Oblivion with ~500 hours.

Go get an XL if you haven't already. Tons of great games for the system, especially RPGs. Shin Megami Tensei IV, Fire Emblem Awakening, and Etrian Odyssey IV all come recommended.

Is it worth it? Nobody knows your own personal tastes better than you. Everyone is going to give their opinion on what they personally enjoy which means nothing since we don't know what kind of gamer you are? Is handhelds for you? Do you commute? Do you feel it's worth it playing an handheld system at home? Some people don't see the point of getting a handheld if they won't use it outside and have home systems available to play at home.

Since you're on GAF then you probably have a good grasp on this already. Do a little googling and take a look at the library. There is no right or wrong answer her. My motto is that if anyone makes a thread or asks if a system is worth purchasing, than it's not worth it.

Nah.

I mean. I like mine, I am glad I bought it at launch, but I really don't use it enough to justify owning one these days.

I have OoT 3D, Street Fighter, Pokemon X, and all ambassador games+any Zelda game available on the store. (Don't own ALBW yet).

Can't say its worth it. Own way more games for my Vita, and it gets way more playtime.

Then again, its a game preference thing, and a hardware preference. I prefer Vita in both instances.

No. It is an old, childish, and gimmicky system with under powered hardware and a cheap design. I have one, and the screen actually hurts my eyes due to how low res it is. If you actually walk around with it, you will look like an idiot, and there isn't much worth playing on it other than Nintendo games, which are both easy and highly repetitive. All of the networking features were designed for Japan and don't work well anywhere else unless you happen to know a large amount of people with 3DSes.

Just buy games on a smartphone, if you have one. They are cheaper, and playing games on a smartphone in public does not make you look like a loser. The Vita has better hardware, but has very few games worth playing, is too expensive, and has been practically abandoned by Sony. And of course, like the 3DS, it is embarrassing to play in public.

Basically, it isn't worth it.

LOL, I love these posts that put forth no actual information to the OP to make an educated decision. Just complete "blah blah blah" to trash talk.

Now, for actual informative details:

I've owned both the 3DS and 3DS XL, and my personal opinion is that the 3DS XL is the better version. First, the OG 3DS has a smaller screen, but the resolution is much better, and it's smaller and lighter so it has those things going for it.

Now the 3DS XL has a few things going for it as well. First, a bigger screen. Now the resolution isn't as good as the OG 3DS but given that both screens aren't super sharp like the Vita's OLED screen, you get used to it and it doesn't really become a negative factor. The battery life is the same for 3DS games on both the 3DS and 3DS XL, but the XL gains an extra hour while playing DS games (if that's something you're into). And finally, if you've got big hands like me, the 3DS XL is DEFINITELY the way to go. I used to get the worst cramps trying to play with the OG 3DS, once I got my hands on the 3DS XL and pumped in many many hours into AC: NL and Pokémon Y with little to no cramps.

And in case anyone's interested in how to SERIOUSLY get rid of any cramps while playing on the XL, you might want to check this out: 3DS XL Grip.
It's a bit pricey, but totally worth it imo.

From the current models XL is the best option. The bigger screen is worth it and the extra batery life is nice.

As for if it's worth it........... I don't know.

Last year was amazing. I think I quite honestly spent more time playing on my 3DS during 2013 than on my Ps3/PC. Between some games I had to catch up with (as I got mine in early 2013) like Kid Icarus and Ocarina of time plus all the awesome releases like Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter, SMTIV, Pokemon, Luigis Mansion, Link between world, etc it was just a fantastic year

But this year.... I'm not feeling it. I finished Bravely Default (which I really liked) during february but havent turned it on since. Other than that I haven't been interested in any release this year and personally I not excited about any upcomming release either. I guess smash looks cool but I'd rather wait for the WiiU version, and personally remakes of pokemon games don't really hype me (X/Y was different, being the first one for 3DS and first one in 3D)

I was actually thinking about selling it some time ago but decided to wait and see if 2015 is any better. Code name S.T.E.A.M looks quite fun and if nintendo goes and announces a metroid and a new zelda (or Majora's Mask remake) or something next year could shape up to be great.
Or mabye Nintendo will decide to make Virtual Console a good think, give SNES, GBA, N64 and DS support to the system and discover the wonders of cross-buy with WiiU...who knows

Yeah, Awakening definitely explains everything perfectly IMO and on the lowest difficulty settings, it's definitely extremely easy. So easy in fact that someone like me, who really has no interest in strategy at all, chose those lowest settings and mostly abused the fuck out of Auto-Battle (only taking control myself only every now and then so I could satisfy my obsessions with levelling some of my characters in a neat way) so that I could focus on enjoying the game for its characters and dialog and stuff. Not being the keanest at the strategy genre should be no reason for completely overlooking Awakening, as it's pretty much as easy or hard as you want it to be, making it easy to start on the lowest settings and then work your way up on successive playthroughs and stuff as you get more confident. If someone like me can really enjoy Awakening despite typically wanting nothing to do with the genre, I definitely have to say it did something right.

Fire Emblem Awakening

I still prefer RoD and PoR for plot, all-around gameplay (mission objectives, elevation, etc.) and such.

But the production value of Awakening is great and it's an amazing game still.

Are there any IQ whores out there that have an XL and have used a regular 3DS? I'm thinking about picking up an XL, had to sell my 3DS a few years ago, now I want to catch up on the stuff I missed. I also forgot how much I enjoy lying back in bed playing a handheld game while watching tv or listening to a podcast. But anyways, for you IQ obsessors out there like myself, is it possible to tolerate the XL IQ? The larger screens and better form factor makes it really desirable.

Yes, and here's your reason:
