Good heaven, that Warlock armor couldn't be more amazing. As a guy who cares way too much what his character looks like, I think this may have tipped the scales for what class I focus on.

I am the exact same dude, I would pick a weaker character if he looks better. I've always cared more for looks than usefulness in games.

Warlock PS exclusive armor is insane. As is the rest of his armor.

Twilight_Gap has sent you a request.

Hope they got on with the preloading thing. Those up and ready for the Beta should be in there at 10:00 PDT and not a minute later!

pshhh, 6pm here, I have to do a whole days worth of work before playing.

Although see you later sleep that weekend....

You're both right but we kind of do indirectly due to the cost of PS+ and Live but yeah it is cheaper, I just was an absolute WoW fiend back in the day so hate thinking of the real amount of money + time i spent on it. All those sub months and CE editions...

Here is my Setup for destiny, Featuring Heisenberg the kitten.

I played WoW for years as well. I don't mind having paid a sub for it all that. I enjoyed my time and that was that.

As an aside, I disagree with the logic of "well we sort of pay a subscription because of Live/Plus" because that's a subscription to another service entirely. Yes it's required to fully enjoy everything Destiny has to offer but that's the same for nearly every game that comes out. You can't attribute that sub to all of those games at the same time and it's cherry picking to choose one game to attribute it to. Just seems like a reach logically.

GAF's general attitude on Destiny has made a total reverse course. It went from mass confusion and skepticism to frenzied hype hysteria.

I don't really understand why people were confused to begin with. The Alpha experience was exactly as I expected.

Bungie and Activision were doing a terrible job of explaining the game. They offered little coherent vision. It was just disparate buzzwords and snippets. That finally started to change in the two months leading up to the Alpha, but even then was messy and confusing. It's especially baffling considering how masterfully they (Bungie, at least) always handled the Halo hype trains.

As most forums did. People judged the game without even knowing anything about it. Now they're all going bat shit insane, needing their Destiny fix. Pretty funny turnaround.

Return to what page?

like it failed then said to return to download page after i did that it suddenly popped into life and started downloading after a console restart and re download.

Yeah I know that feeling I don't regret it I'm just like oh wow really on how much I spent.

Well essentially you HAVE to have a subscription to enjoy it although i do get your point, but for me personally I will literally only be paying for the XBL and PS+ services for Halo and Destiny, sure there are other games, but really when september hits I will be purely playing Destiny non stop, Although granted it isn't half as bad as the game price + subs for WoW and other MMO's but I do see the additional content as being part of the sub fee to keep the game fresh and up to date.

Bungie and Activision were doing a terrible job of explaining the game.

This is what confuses me. I understood what kind of game Destiny is and what it's set out to do.

They always said it'd be a sci-fi FPS with loot and co-op set in large open worlds. They even showed a live gameplay demo. What exactly confused people?

Fair enough if people think a game looks boring. I didn't understand that complaint about Destiny either. Co-op shooters with friends are usually really fun (see: Borderlands).

Nonsense. If anything Destiny has mirrored exactly the trajectory of Halo CE. That game also didn't demo well in the months leading up to launch and impressions of it in the press were pretty underwhelming. It's only until the game actually started to be played by the consumers did word of mouth spread, the rest is history.

Judging from the leaked alpha footage prior to E3, I thought the game was fucking boring and would end in a disaster.

Bungie did a pretty great job of explaining it. If people actually bothered to look for the info instead of being spoonfed, they wouldn't have been confused. Any regular on /r/DestinyTheGame on reddit before the Alpha knew every bit of info that others claimed Bungie did a "terrible job" in explaining. The info has been anything but messy and confusing. Bungie wants you to experience the game on your own, so excuse them for not being there to hold your hand every time you get confused about something. They provide the info, you just actually have to be proactive and find it.

Yeah, the game pretty much is what they said it'd be. I find most games incredibly frustrating/boring to watch unless the person playing is good. FPSs are especially boring looking even though I enjoy playing them myself.

Any time there's a new game revealed on GAF and skepticism abounds.... RELEASE A BETA/DEMO. Handle it like Bungie did and keep the community up to date frequently, don't try to hide anything - be up front about everything.

There was a weird aura surrounding the game before this E3:

Confusion. People didn't know what it was; some still don't. Bungie's trailers didn't have much context, which left more questions than answers. "Is it just fantasy space CoD? Is it Halolands? Looks boring; is there more or is that it?". I remember someone noting in one trailer that there were "too many flashy explosions and lights" and it looked distracting. Without an understanding of the mechanics, it's hard to diffuse or dissect those clips. Those who played the alpha know this more than most - go back and look through some videos from pre-E3 and you'll notice so many things in ways you didn't before.

Disdain and apathy. The PR troubles. The "exclusive content" fiasco. The apparent Xbox shunning. Bitter feelings over Reach. The "hush-hush" updates. I'm sure I could go on about the hazy atmosphere around Bungie and Activision (some of which I even felt) that made people lose interest. There were people skeptical of Bungie being able to deliver at all. In some communities (especially the larger ones), they aren't especially well known or revered, so the hype felt inflated.

And the hype was another issue. On top of the things above, the media was (and still is) pushing the game hard. Even more than the media were the zealous fans (some more than others) who swore by Bungie and the game until their dying breath. It felt like if you had any concern or issue - even a mild one - you'd be chewed up.

So you've got somebody who is confused about what Destiny is. Then they see all the sketchy stuff going on behind the scenes. Maybe they'll try to join a community in an attempt to understand, but they'll be turned away instead.

This is just the way I see it, and again, a lot of these things are the way I felt. I've always said that Destiny looked good on paper, but what has happened between June 2013 and June 2014 has done neither the game nor its developers any favors. These back-to-back tests are the best way to let the game speak for itself and relieve some of that pressure.

I'd like to add that on the title screen the music for the beta only lasts like 30 seconds then it's like NOPE that's enough for you :(

I don't like preload, if it's there let me play.

I have no idea how PC gamers deal with having hot new games on their pc but not being able to play them till the midnight of launch...

When you're in charge of marketing you can't expect your potential customers to adapt to your style of communication. What if they won't look for the info? You've just lost a sale. /r/DestinyTheGame and NeoGAF aren't the rest of the world.

Hey Gaffers,

anyone else intentionally not playing the beta? ( unless there is a bonus that we get in the retail from playing the beta?)

I played the alpha and realized I like the game- it has so much potential and I think playing the beta will kind of take away from that new game feeling. Am I the only one that is self inflicting this torment?

One of the things that irks me is I know Nintendo fans that write off Halo and Bungie because of some trivial fanboy shit along with spouting stereotypes about the fans. Bungie might have never made a game for a Nintendo system, but they make games that make me feel as happy or happier than I did playing old Nintendo games. They've got the touch because they are fans like you and I.

I think what happened was everyone saw gameplay footage, said "Meh, looks like Halo", and stopped thinking about it, assuming they knew everything about it. And from a gameplay perspective, Destiny is really close to Halo CE, but something that I think didn't come across in the trailers was how they also mirrored the feel of Halo in the game.

By "Feel" I mean that feel of exploring a desolate, beautiful, ancient Alien structure. Roaming over a largely open map dotted with bits of overgrown buildings poking over the tree line was something that the original Halo did incredibly well. There are other scenario details that follow Halo's design pretty closely, such as a multi-sided war, prevalence of AIs, and tech so advanced it's indistinguishable from magic. I felt like these were all elements that were largely downplayed in Halo 2-4, with those games instead focusing more and more on Master Chief and his personal story.

Playing the Destiny Alpha sparked in me that same old excitement of setting out through the ruins of an ancient civilization.

You get an exclusive beta emblem for playing on the last day or two.
