GAF's general attitude on Destiny has made a total reverse course. It went from mass confusion and skepticism to frenzied hype hysteria.
There was a weird aura surrounding the game before this E3:
Confusion. People didn't know what it was; some still don't. Bungie's trailers didn't have much context, which left more questions than answers. "Is it just fantasy space CoD? Is it Halolands? Looks boring; is there more or is that it?". I remember someone noting in one trailer that there were "too many flashy explosions and lights" and it looked distracting. Without an understanding of the mechanics, it's hard to diffuse or dissect those clips. Those who played the alpha know this more than most - go back and look through some videos from pre-E3 and you'll notice so many things in ways you didn't before.
Disdain and apathy. The PR troubles. The "exclusive content" fiasco. The apparent Xbox shunning. Bitter feelings over Reach. The "hush-hush" updates. I'm sure I could go on about the hazy atmosphere around Bungie and Activision (some of which I even felt) that made people lose interest. There were people skeptical of Bungie being able to deliver at all. In some communities (especially the larger ones), they aren't especially well known or revered, so the hype felt inflated.
And the hype was another issue. On top of the things above, the media was (and still is) pushing the game
hard. Even more than the media were the zealous fans (some more than others) who swore by Bungie and the game until their dying breath. It felt like if you had any concern or issue - even a mild one - you'd be chewed up.
So you've got somebody who is confused about what Destiny is. Then they see all the sketchy stuff going on behind the scenes. Maybe they'll try to join a community in an attempt to understand, but they'll be turned away instead.
This is just the way I see it, and again, a lot of these things are the way I felt. I've always said that Destiny looked good on paper, but what has happened between June 2013 and June 2014 has done neither the game nor its developers any favors. These back-to-back tests are the best way to let the game speak for itself and relieve some of that pressure.
