Fighting Games Weekly | July 14-20 | Bracket Resets Full of Tears (of Joy?)

While I prefer sprites to 3D (I don't need to bust out 3rd Strike or Marvel 2 gifs, do I?), it's really all about art direction. Injustice and SF4 look like shit because the art direction is ugly and bad. Compare to Marvel 3, which has an vibrant, colorful, almost cel-shaded look. It looks incredible!

Everything I've seen on the internet leads me to believe that I'm one of the few out there that likes SF4's art style/direction.

Agree with the general sentiment about SG. Lots of bells and whistles, but the core gameplay definitely is a bit dull and lacking a "kinetic" feel like many other fighting games. Which is the result of a bunch of things from hitstop to presentation and animation. And I think many people (including me) gave it a shot despite not liking the aesthetics either.

Disclaimer: I don't live in Japan. From what I heard was discussed at Evo and other stuff I've heard out of Japan, not a lot of new players are picking up Xrd. It's getting played enough, but it's a lot of the old GG players while most of the BB/P4U/other guys are still rocking their games. BB is still being played quite a bit.

From what I heard it seems that all the arcsys games coexist with their own crowd of consistent players. Even +R

But I do think arcsys wants a hype announcement coming out of arc revo because that's their hustle right now. New characters means more credits putting into the machines

2) Melty Blood (French Bread), Arcana Heart 3 (Examu, console port by ArcSys)
4) Do you mean push-to-set button config like in Blazblue (ArcSys) or actual button feedback display like in Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown (Sega)?

Also, VF5:FS had in-game frame data, and VF4:Evo's tutorial still stands above although Skullgirls and Blazblue both made decent efforts.

VF4: Evo's tutorial is patented by Sega.

I got bodied by the EVOla virus and have had some sort of chest infection since Thursday night. I blame all the dirty money changing hands in Las Vegas. Still had a blast though. Only gaffer I met was Q cause it's hard to miss the dude in the scooter. Nice meeting you though Q.

I recall Mike Z citing that fact as the reason why Skullgirls' tutorial mode isn't like VF4: Evo's. I can't find the patent online, though.
either way i wanna make a video outlining how insane 4EVO's tutorial is. beyond the system tutorial, which outlines every significant option select in the game, it has individual exercises for each character so you know how to play them correctly and how to capitalize on damage opportunities.

fucking nuts. it's so great. training mode, too, has everything. and the game is over ten years old.

Sounds awesome, too bad they didn't do this for VF5.

the system tutorial in 5FS is not as good as 4EVO's, and it doesn't have the individual character stuff at all, but 5FS's training mode is a bit more flexible. SoA supplemented FS's release with a video tutorial series which was alright.

The videos were a nice touch - the character-specific portions gave viewers a better idea of what each character's moves tended to do, and tried to do more than just rattle off the obvious stuff. Props on SoA for making them; the idea is nothing new, but most Japanese devs only make them for Japan.

SoA's support of FS has been wild. none of us at VFDC expected a second SEGA Cup, or for SoA to drop another $16,000 on the top 16 payouts. so crazy. gives me hope for VF6.

I do aswell

Marvel looks WAY better though.
Seconding this, though what I love about Street Fighter is the expressive faces. Getting punched in the gut during an ultra always produces a face of hilarity, and Marvel lacks that because it is trying to have a "serious" tone. I prefer Street Fighter's tone, but Marvel's graphical style.

I went online in FS last night at around 9:30 pm EST and couldn't find a single soul online.
that happens sometimes, make sure you set ranked search to worldwide though. I usually don't have trouble finding matches, I was even playing Sunday morning at like 10am.

but yeah, sometimes it's a ghost town and I'll have to wait around. I just go on gaf.

Yeah I agree with this right here. Then again, when Vampire Saviour has my favorite overall presentation in the 2D traditional fighter realm, I guess that's to be expected.

Marvel is one of the best looking fighters, especially considering how many characters are on screen. If we do get a new Darkstalkers I wouldn't mind them going with a similar style.

I think one of the reasons some people didn't like SF IV is that they didn't like how comical and cartoonish it was, that they were expecting something more realistic and grounded.

They need to announce Bridget to bring the hype back.

You're never getting Bridget, never!

A good video on some of some of the system mechanics and basics of Under Night In-Birth, which is releasing in 10 days. I haven't watched the entire thing yet, but it seems really helpful for people who are interested in the game but aren't sure how the mechanics differentiate UNIEL from other fighting games. There's been plenty I learned even in the first 5-10 minutes since there aren't a lot of resources explaining the system mechanics of the game.

Edit: Finished watching it. What an awesome video! Thanks so very much to Sourenga! It's a great resource for introducing the game to people.

Yeah, our own 16-Bit is still owed money from his last win.

Why are folks even bothering to go? Is VxG paying for their trip?

"It is not meant to be a video game tournament the scale of Evo, it is meant to be a vacation!"

At least that's what Triforce was hiding behind after the fact, heh.

POST THE GIF.
