Thor is now the goddess of Thunder

Meh.

I'm not a fan of this. Not because they are adding a female character, but because it seems like a lazy way to appease fans. Marvel can't be bothered to create a new badass female superhero in the same vein as Thor, so they're just doing a gender swap instead.

If you want more Norse mythology shit, there are literally tons of good Norse Goddesses to draw inspiration from. Seriously. Go look, Marvel. I'll wait here. Can't we just get a new female superhero that is cool and not have a temporary female Thor for a year and a half?

Perhaps I'm just confused, but how does Thor relinquish his mantle as Thor? Superman is Kal-El, Batman is Bruce Wayne, Iron Man is Tony Stark, but Thor is Thor.

I was hoping that Sif or Freya could just pick up where Thor left off.

They have two already in Sid and Valkyrie. Both had their series cancelled due to low sales. Chances are Marvel saw that and said "well, maybe the best way to do this is to piggyback off the Thor name?"

We can have both, actually.

Again I think that by going to a mainstream show, The View, with this specific announcement it becomes a social comment on male/female equality. "A woman could be Thor just as well". The deaths of comic characters are something entirely different. When it comes to announcements regarding race, sexuality and gender, it's trying to make a social point. Definitely. And that's fine, but they just never stick to it. They use it for the publicity, then a new writer comes in and it's abandoned.

Over the last two decades Marvel has introduced a lot of characters from previously underrepresented demographics. For the most part it has genuinely tried to push these characters in their comics, but it's not easy to do this both organically and have those characters sell. Legacy characters may seem cheap, but tend to work well thanks to their connection to one of the most iconic mantles. If they had introduced Miles Morales as Arachno-Kid people would not have cared for the most part and if they called this character Thundrix the Boltastic the impact would be far less as well. See the Sif and Valkyrie attempts.

In the end stories can be objectively great, but commercially unsuccessful. Most writers and editorial seem to want to find that balance.

Yet we never do. We've discussed this before, and it's always with regards to a character piggybacking off another's name. Because as much as they can do both, they rarely do.

We just got Kamala, sure. But outside of that?

Anyways, I care less about male comic fans' opinions... I'm curious about what (more) female comic fans think.

Thor has a specific place in the Marvel universe, he can't be replaced by just any other Norse god or any other god. Of all the gods, Thor is the most powerful. He is the greatest god alive.

That is what they are trying to say here, there is no "other powerful female character" (which Marvel has plenty of that they are also trying to push, like Captain Marvel) that they can just stick in here to take Thor's place. This person has to specifically be called Thor and live up to Thor's legacy. And she should be as powerful as Thor, but we'll have to wait and see what they do with the story to get her there.

Care to enlighten me? Is male Thor still going to be around? Is this an alternative universe or something?

It's not an alternative universe or genderswap or anything. Thor Odinson is still around. He is just not worthy of wielding Mjolnir right now, so this new character is going to be the "New" Thor for now. His story will continue in Avengers/Uncanny Avengers and this new "Unworthy Thor" book.

Yet another gross grab for headlines by doing something that shouldn't need a fucking The View announcement.

Give me a break.

Edit: to clarify, I think it's cool, but fuck the view

They're making a change they think might bring in more women viewers.

Here's how it goes:

Writer: The new Thor will be a woman.
Editor: K. You do you. I'll let marketing know.
Marketing: Hey, women readers might like this. We're owned by Disney now, right? Disney owns ABC. ABC has The View. Can we get a little of play on that show you think?

You're assuming Marketing and Social Commentary came first, when the fact that Aaron, who's been writing God of Thunder for awhile, is still attached points to it being his idea for a story.

That's what this entire thread is about now, actually. I don't mind if she's called Thor. My real problem is that the numbering is going back to #1.

Thor: God of Thunder is only up to issue #24. Who cares?

Yeah, no. Thor is Thor. A male. They should have made a female with a different name, but share similarities to Thor, like Batgirl or She-Hulk does for Batman and Hulk. Don't just change this iconic character's sex.

Thor Odinson will probably be wielding his god-killing axe for awhile. He created it when he was younger, before he was worthy to hold Mjolnir.

Alternatively, he'll be using the sword shown in Avengers. the one that old Thor uses.

Someone else will take Mjolnir and the mantle of Thor. Probably for a year or so.

either or is fine. i dont really care what they call him, just use the same magic they used to bring angela into 616 and do it to him. he and union jack can go around and fuck shit up

Why would you want Marvelman in 616? The things great about him come from his own universe.

Do we know why Thor is deemed unworthy yet? Didn't Thor just go through a story arc where he was basically the bestest god ever and every other god in existence was praying to him as he was stopping a magical bomb that was going to kill every god that ever existed and ever would have existed?

I can't speak for everyone obviously, but for me it most likely won't appeal to me. Thor had this weird sort of sex appeal that comics tend to lack for their female audiences and just saying female Thor isn't going to make this Thor appealing. I would rather have them develop Sif, who is already an awesome character.

Wait, is there a reason we're counting Kamala as an exception? Because she's piggybacking off the Ms. Marvel name.

This actually seems like an interesting idea, but as with the impending death of Wolverine, does Marvel really have to insult our intelligence by pretending that this is more than a temporary change in status quo? I'd be surprised if either lasts more than a year.

My problem with comics remains their eternal state: with very rare exceptions, no one dies, no on ages, no stories ever end unless they become financially untenable.

My problem with this is not so much that Thor is now a girl. My problem is that characters in comics never go away, they just get restarted endlessly.

Think of it more like a modern mythology? Thats the only way to deal with it other than to just read specific arcs and act like they are contained stories.

The whole "Lady ____", "She-____", "Ms.____" thing is a problem. It implies that these female takes on existing male characters are just variations or spin-offs rather than allowing them to be their own thing independent of a male counterpart. Making Carol Danvers Captain Marvel and appointing this new Thor is a step in the right direction.

Because it's incredibly hard to kick off brand new characters. and sustain them. It's usually easier to piggyback them through a known name. Even Kamala Khan was brought on through the Ms. Marvel name. They gave her own comic which started off ok (number ones usually do) but has been losing readers every month since. Harley Quinn meanwhile has been successful, but then again she came through under the Batman titles.

Wait, is there a reason we're counting Kamala as an exception? Because she's piggybacking off the Ms. Marvel name.

She is, yeah, but it's part of her character and not purely a marketing thing. Kamala specifically looks up to Carol Danvers as her role model and favourite superhero. So her taking the name Ms. Marvel is more about honouring her personal hero than any random reason. She's also not a carbon copy of the existing Captain Marvel, she's got her own unique personality and power set.

Also Ms. Marvel has never been a huge mainstream character so there's not a lot to piggyback off of.

I don't mind this, but having a woman be called by a male name is gonna be strange. At least he wasn't called the mighty Dave :p

Care to enlighten me? Is male Thor still going to be around? Is this a different universe or something?

Male Thor is still around, except he's not the God of Thunder anymore.

Thor: God of Thunder is only up to issue #24. Who cares?
So what did I do to receive your condescending tone?

And Old Thor never used a sword in Aaron's run. It's always been Mjolnir. Both images you posted are concept art. And the image you posted from Avengers takes place 422 years later.

I'd never thought of that myself, but I suppose that you'd need a pulse on the female readership beforehand.

Wait, is there a reason we're counting Kamala as an exception? Because she's piggybacking off the Ms. Marvel name.

Touché, but Carol already took up the mantle of Captain Marvel before that. Plus she has her own powers.

Chalk me up as a person who'd rather see a female character stand her own and have her own powers than simply be given the powers of another already-established superhero and ride on his name. I don't read superhero comics, and this does nothing to interest me.

I don't think you're the target audience though, it's probably women (obviously) and long-time comic readers.

Kamala is also an example of the legacy naming though.

We've gotten Amadeus Cho, Nico Minoru, Hazmat, Miles Morales, the new Nova, White Tiger and Ghost Rider, more gay and bisexual characters like Karolina Dean and Striker, a black Nick Fury, the Aboriginal Manifold and more focus on established characters like Luke Cage. Autism spectrum characters like Finesse Obviously these don't all have their own titles, but they've been trying to establish a lot of underrepresented characters by seeding them in high profile books if they didn't. The reality of the business is that not all of these attempts sell, but apart from gimmicks they've certainly tried to organically build a following for these.

Like it was mentioned several times before they do create original female characters but often fail to catch on and are neglected to simple comic appearances.

Huh. I could have sworn this had already happened once before. Maybe I’m thinking of an issue of What If or something…

But anyway, anyone complaining that ‘New person getting the hammer doesn’t make him Thor’ needs to brush on their 90’s Thor history. Specifically when Eric Masterson spent over a year (including that summer’s big crossover event about a little thing called The motherfuckin’ Infinity Gauntlet) calling himself just that while Tru-Thor was banished for killing Loki. Sure he proved popular, er worthy enough to get his own uru weapon and became Thuderstrike later, but for a while he was Thor. He even attempted to hide the fact that he wasn’t the original Thor for a while by mimicking the Ye Olde Butchered English style the character used back then, before he (and the writers) realized he sounded like an idiot and dropped it.

So there’s precedent for this. Do I wish they had the stones/creativity to come up with a new female goddess/superheroine character instead? Yes. Am I upset with what we’re getting? Not really, no.

I'd adore a movie with the current Thor. Might take the sting out of DCs inability to produce a Wonder Woman movie.
I'd rather have them make a standalone movie with the established female heroes

Give x-men back to marvel :(

Meh. We already have Valkyrie.

As has been said before, no one knows who Valkyrie fucking is. People know who Thor is, and the whole point of the marketing push for this is to go on a female-demographic daytime show like The View and say "Thor can be a woman, because women are awesome!"

I'd rather they give us a damn Captain Marvel movie already. Carol Danvers is prime movie material, people will fall in love with her.
