Thor is now the goddess of Thunder

A lot of stupid posts on Twitter.

It's a shame that you are automatically sexist if you don't like the idea.

This is the modern internet for you :/

Doesn't Thor get replaced all the time? Girl has to know her days with the Hammer are limited unless she reaches Beta Ray Bill's level.

Status quo is lazy. Mainstream female led comics is progress.

Not unless it lasts. Returning to the status quo does nothing positive in the long term. Wait until the next comic event. "Male Thor returns (yay!) and takes back top spot. Maybe the female usurper will get to be a sidekick".

Look at The Question, a DC character. A gay woman replaced him a few years back. It was pretty cool. And now I believe The Question is a man again. That does nothing for progress.

They went on The View, which has a mostly female audience, with a comic announcement (comics being mostly thought of as a male hobby) that pertains to a male character being replaced by a female one. Of course it's a social comment that they hope people will latch onto to drive sales. And that I hate.

If they committed to it that'd be different. But solely by having the mainstream representation of the character remain male for the coming years (with Avengers 2 and 3), this is negated almost entirely for me. It's a weak gimmick move unless they commit to it.

its an attention grab, not a shot a social commentary. they did with cap dying, new cap, miles, spock, and will probably do one when wolverine dies.

They aren't doing this for progress, they are doing this for money. People shouldn't let the spin fool them.

Progress will be pushing new female characters (which are created all the time) to the forefront with a good marketing package behind them and a story that actually gets people giving a shit.

The problem with the current system is that the same heroes are rotated to the spotlight because they are proven to be marketable.

This is all about getting readers. "Hey, Thor is a marketable name now. How do we sell him in a new way? Oh, I know, Make him a lady. That will get us in the mainstream media. Chris Hemsworth will make a funny comment. We'll do it for a year and reverse before Avengers."

Pretty typical for Marvel nowadays.

Yeah I think the line is that they're running comics more like TV seasons now. Let them run for a while, then set back to #1 when a new big story starts.

DC's getting in on it too with Teen Titans and a couple other books.

does this mean there won't be 500 different Thor and Avengers issues with him as a male and they won't recon this in 2 months with a THOR THE MAN IS BACK issue?

superhero comics are weird.

Again I think that by going to a mainstream show, The View, with this specific announcement it becomes a social comment on male/female equality. "A woman could be Thor just as well". The deaths of comic characters are something entirely different. When it comes to announcements regarding race, sexuality and gender, it's trying to make a social point. Definitely. And that's fine, but they just never stick to it. They use it for the publicity, then a new writer comes in and it's abandoned.

I'm guessing this is just for sales...
It'll probably boost sales for a bit, but if they start to decline, you'll probably see a change.
They probably have 2 story archs ready, depending how sales go.

Big numbers are scary ReiGun. How is the average Joe or Sally POSSIBLY going to buy the newest Marvel/DC funnybook when those big numbers on the issues drive them away?

wait, women are pissed?

Fantastic - my first thought was on point. Women love sex appeal directed at them too.

More on topic... fuck it.

I certainly like comic book Thor for his sex appeal, which is why this announcement certainly doesn't appeal to me. Also why call her Thor? Why couldn't we just get more awesome Sif? Or another Storm and Loki thing? I liked those.

With Joss in a leadership position in the MCU, a female led Thor movie isn't impossible. I don't know whether to laugh or cry that that is more likely than a Wonder Woman movie.

miles still exists though. and that was the last time they used race as a marketing factor. will new thor stick around? probably not. but are they making a social commentary? i dont think so. especially not appearing on the view.

From what I gather they're marketing this as a gender swap, a crowning achievement for female characters in comics, so they wanted the new character to keep the same name. If they didn't call her Thor, they wouldn't be on The View.

Maybe it is a social comment, hadn't thought of that. Cynical me says they see more women getting in to comics and they want to crack that demographic wide open so it's more than just a trickle of new readers here and there.

disclosure: It's still Aaron writing it, so I don't care either way.

So my brain is fucked from the movie universe and comics, but what I gather is:

  • Thor is still a Asgardian/Half Elder god, so still extremely strong.
  • Thor is no longer worthy of the hammer.
  • Someone else (and woman this time) is.

My only problem with this is how confusing having two "Thor"s is. Hopefully Thor Odinson is just no longer the 'God of Thunder', and female Thor goes by her actual name + the 'God of Thunder' mantle.

I am going have to stop you right there Reigun. But XS is the greatest of all timer

XS_001.jpg

Hey, not hating on XS, but we're talking about characters who share the same name.

Also, Danica's costume is better. :p

What is this? Looks interesting.
Danica Williams, The Flash in the Batman Beyond timeline. DC made her about a year or so ago for the "Justice League Beyond" weekly comic.

They also made a new Batgirl Beyond.

That's what I assume it will be. In a year, Odinson will get his hammer back.

Yeah, no. Thor is Thor. A male. They should have made a female with a different name, but share similarities to Thor, like Batgirl or She-Hulk does for Batman and Hulk. Don't just change this iconic character's sex.

But you won't get air time on The View and other mainstream media by doing that.

It's all about getting the money.

Well they aren't changing his sex. It is a different character with the same name as a title.

They already did this with Loki and it was pretty cool and fit but didn't get the attention because, well, it was Loki.

They also like to change up Thor alot, I mean come on we got frog thor. And Beta Ray Bill and Thunderstrike. Will see how it plays out but lets be honest about what this is. They aren't trying to make some statement or talk on an issue. This is for hype and to try and sell some books. Unfortunately comic fans are a finicky bunch and if they think this is going to somehow pick up female readers they didn't have before I have serious doubts.

Oh marketing. That makes sense then, though I have a hard time seeing it as an achievement when Thor is most likely going to get his hammer right back in time for the Avengers movie.

I find the lack of outrage over her chestplate (boob armor) very surprising.

Breasts are a sensitive area. Why wouldn't you wear one? I would. It'd be like those socks with individual toe places.
