Thor is now the goddess of Thunder

Soo ... is this canon? Gonna stick to this moving forward or is it a "Her ORIGINS started out as the new THOR but NOW (after we do some fuckery to get back to the status quo!) she takes up the title of .... Sharkeisha! Coming to a comic store near yoooou!"? Is this something the movies will reflect? (with the ending of THOR 2 I could see this happening)

What to make of this ....

MarvelThorWoman3.jpg

looks like what could be the main character for the next god of war game.

Wish it had been another character.

Just because I know Marvel won't stick with it, what with the whole multibillion dollar film franchise with Hemsworth in it.

I love it, though.

As said before, this is CANON. No alternate timeline, no multiverse. From the comic previews it seems she will have the hammer for quite awhile. I would think sales play a large part in how long she stays in the role. I doubt the movies will reflect this, because movie makers don't want to confuse joe schmoe and the ladies want their Hemsworth fan-service.

People do realize that even if (when) Thor Odinson gets the hammer back, this is still canon, right? Like, we all understand what the word "canon" means, correct?

"Picking up mjolnir" is the Marvel equivalent of killing a bunch of green lanterns

I'm sort of cheating with air walker. I think he could pick it up but not actually use it. Destroyer is a special case, since Thor's life force was animating it at the time.

This whole thing would be less controversial if we just consider Thor to be the new "dread pirate Roberts" yeah it was some dudes name, but now we are passing it around. No one wants to surrender to "Wesley, God of thunder"

I'm not sure people really realize what canon entails or really get multiverse (this isn't marvel multiverse). I also don't think people get how storylines work in comics. The whole Spdey-Ock Storyline would throw some people into convulsions.

This is a publicity move, pure and simple. I'm not saying the storyline wasn't planned or anything, just them making noise and news about it. They are trying to make this news and being disingenuous about the lasting implications just to counter the whole Archie dying thing. Which to me is kind of shitty from Marvel, they don't need to do that to a small company like Archie Comics who got some spotlight they never see. They could have waited till SDCC to do this.

Yes. This.

What sort of sales is Captain Marvel pulling in at the moment? No doubt new Thor will stick around as long as the moneys there but I'd be interested to see how big the market is.

canon is a buzzword thrown around to show disapproval now.

Capt. Marvel came in at #89 this past May with 26,057 units sold; Ms. Marvel came in at #59 with 34,839 units sold.

Other Marvel female led book stats for that month:

Black Widow: 26,136
She-Hulk: 25,543
Elektra: 26,612

For comparison's sake, here's DC's five highest female led books:

Harley Quinn: 62,467
Batgirl: 31,552
Wonder Woman: 30,655
Supergirl: 22,783
Catwoman: 20,144

Note: This doesn't include any title's digital sales.

No matter how cynical the idea may seem to some, as with superior, it will live or die by how good the run is.

Usually that is pretty iffy, but Aaron is writing. This gon be good.

Damn!

Yeah seems silly. I think they could have c had a billion different Asgardian women to wield it.

And yeah it won't stick due to the billion dollar series they have Thor in.

Interesting to see if new Thor can break the mould then otherwise they'll just revert back to Odinson if the new sales cant match the old one.

Also I wonder how consistent these sales are because it looks like the same audience buying all 4 of those comic as there pretty much the same.

Current Thor did 36,945, which is only 2,106 more than Ms. Marvel. Shouldn't be too hard to stay in that range as I doubt the nerd rage will result in too many Thor fans dropping the book. Especially when Nu-Thor will have the same writer as current Thor; folks are gonna want to continue the story.

What will be interesting is to see how sales compare to the book starring Thor Odinson.

I put Vegas money that she will not be named "Thor" in comic cause Cap and Ironman damn sure won't call her that.

I'm wondering how sales will/will not suffer over this change. Comics are largely male dominated/sold to males. While this is an attempt to get "female readers" on board, I'm not sure this is the right way to go.

yawn this is such a non event it's not even funny, we'll have normal Thor back to wielding his hammer in time for Avengers Age of Ultron

First a new Captain America (again already? We just had Bucky Cap. This will be the 7th person other then Steve Rogers to hold the title in continuity)

Now we're getting Thor III? What next someone other then Tony takes over for Iron Man again?

My vote goes to Bran Stark and Arya Stark.

Some people might not like change but it is inevitable.

I'm glad I just appreciate comics from a distance, mainly through movies/TV shows, the cartoons of the 90s and what I pick up from the internet and wikis.

I'm not upset at a new Thor (or thunder god that wields Mjolnir) just that they shake things up but always go back on it and things get so convoluted and end up- not mattering in the end.
Oh no Spider-Man has been replaced in some way. Give it a few months/year and everything will be back to normal.
Oh no, Thor lost his hammer and now a woman has it. Don't worry, Thor will get Mjolnir back in a while.
Oh no, a great villian is "dead". Don't worry, he'll be back as the architect behind the next big event.

Would be nice if a comic changed something up and then stuck with it but I guess at this point when you have characters as established as they have you can't shake things up without a massive drop in interest. Gonna be interesting to see how long FemThor stays.

If Aaron was off then i'd probably be worried but since he's not, gimme gimme gimme. Is Ribic still on interior art? such a killer combo.

Charles Xavier is dead. Really dead.

I said this in the other thread but I'll say it here:

That's not how Thor works.

Thor is his name, not a title or an alias. You get the powers with the hammer, but you don't become Thor by being the thunder god any more than you become Odin by ruling Asgard.

This is dumb.

She's not Thor just like Beta Ray Bill wasn't Thor.

Beta Ray Bill wasn't Thor because Beta Ray Bill is actually a horse. With a big ass horse penis flopping around everywhere all uncouth. Apples to Oranges.

You didn't read what I was replying to, clearly. Everybody would love to just create a new enduring character. Since you clearly have that figured out, I expect to see your comic topping the charts soon.

I thought you were replying to me agreeing with that other poster. So what did I miss?

You mention some female warrior characters, (2 of whom are probably older than most of the people in this thread, and Angela was a tagalong creation from another comic label) in reply to my supporting the statement that Marvel would rather genderswap an established name than put the work in to try to build and float a new popular female character from scratch to create a new brand. I didn't say it was extremely simple, I stated my opinion of what they'd rather do.

So because they're older or acquired, and they've already been built and floated, and they're in the same vein as Thor, they don't count, and Marvel didn't already try that?

what? 40 fucking years ago? Think they could give it another shot? Valkyrie was created in 1970? We already got too many magical warrior sword wielding shield wives than we know what to do with? Why did didn't they just admit that weakness.
