Have PlayStation Ads Gotten Worse Than Xbox Ads on the New Systems?

Only game related stuff on mine.

The store(games)

Agreed, but both web stores are easier to navigate for both consoles at this time.

the xbox one you only have 3 button presses to get to any game product.

its awesome. it reminds of how the ps3 store use to be..... I Loved the ps3 store before they changed it :[

Ads aren't really "ads" on PS4. They are more like suggestions and information about new games. So you can't compare them to the Xbone ads.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

I don't own an XBO (or PS4 for that matter) but I never just go to the store to browse. I know what I want and am on my computer way more than the consoles, so purchasing games through the web store is easier.

Dude....dude.

Read the thread, PS4 has fucking ads for Slim Jims....SLIM JIMS!

Not sure what people are talking about with Xbox One ads. There's so few compared to Xbox 360. I just took these shots (with my shitty camera on my phone, sorry):

That's 2 ads on the front end, 3 if you don't have Gold. (and some people don't consider those 2 as ads because they're for content you would use on the console)

If you actually go into the Games section on the store:

For the most part, Sony console ads aren't too bad, and on the PS3, they gave you the option to turn off the "what's new" screen. There are a few things that still bother me, though, like the always-present "Redbox Instant by Verizon" icon on the XMB, or the PSN store ads on the Vita app switcher. The latter case, granted, generally is relevant to Playstation, so it's somewhat tolerable.

Aside from this, Xbox One ads don't seem as bad as the dark times of the Xbox 360.

This looks a lot better to me.

My complaint might be a bit petty, it's just I pass the ad for The Purge like every day and it finally got me going today for some reason.

I don't think it's a pretty complaint, I didn't know how bad it was because until today I rarely use my PS4 and when I buy things it's from the webstore.

I had the same impression until I saw screengrabs for US Store. It's clearly ads.

As of now, 360 has the most ads following by PS4, XB1 and PS3. I guess being a market leader has its disadvantage. How's Wii U?

should be better on the console and its sad that it isn't

The console store definitely should be a lot better than it is, but I think even if the console store was really well done that browsing the webstore with a mouse/kb would still be easier and more convenient.

Plus, personally, when I sit down at my couch and boot up my consoles it's generally to specifically play something, not to shop. Shopping is something I think about when at my PC where I can easily google things and learn more than a storefront is going to tell me.

Ads get confused with services. Services like YouTube, Netflix, and etc. This is the thing. You don't read your console box anymore because you want the games. You don't read from a console box and expect it to be something like Roku or something similar showing off Twitch, YouTube, or etc. Word of mouth is: It has a bluray player. Score!

This guy gets it.

Are the X1 ads not game related?

Looking at the front end and the games section of the Xbox One store, I see ads for games, DLC, and Every Street United (which is an Xbox produced show that you can get on your console). The one non-game ad is in the store, not on the console's main frontend.

US PSN member, I saw an ad for Slim Jims inserted into the order of available PS4 games. It didn't bother me. I assume that unless there is some kind of substantial consumer criticism of the practice it will be business as usual from here on out.

I enjoy the large splashes and special features while browsing for movies, TV shows, and games. I'm in the app to shop and I find them helpful more often than not, and kind of cool to look at.

Actually, what you're describing is what the XB1 "ads" are in the featured section of the home screen. You won't see ads for outside products (e.g. McDonalds, slim jims, etc). And often, one of the featured icons is actually an announcement of upcoming feature changes or if a new system update has arrived.

In the XB1 storefront, you will occasionally see the term "advertisement," but again it is for content you can still purchase/view/use on the XB1 console. Examples of this are the Forza downloadable content and the Every Street United promotion icons that are shown in a few screenshots in this thread. Again, you will not see ads for outside products that you can't use/purchase on the console.

It's actually astonishing how different the advertising is on the XB1 compared the 360. I'm happy they changed things up.

So I guess it's a matter of ads (which will, rarely, include non-content ads) in the store and none on the homescreen on PS4, versus ads (doesn't ever seem to be non-content ads) on the homescreen and very little in the store on XB1.

Yea, think that's a good summary.

Only thing I never got clarification was this post:
no I'm not confusing activity with ads. My activity feed is FULL OF ADS mixed in with my and my friends' activity.

Any PS4 owners know what he was talking about? He's banned now, so I guess was just making stuff up?

I really hope bigboss comes back and clarifies what the hell his post is talking about because I am still bewildered.

I'm done.

He's right to an extent. It's like logging into an MMO and they bring up a screen suggesting what quests, dungeons, or events are available. Your attention is on content available rather than content as a whole. It's either that or walking into a store and seeing the next big game with its giant marketing poster and preorder slips everywhere.

This is half the reason why I stay home and order on console. I go to an electronics store and I give one eyes attention because I know what they're trying to make customers interested in. I get the same treatment at home with my consoles.

He isn't right about the US store though. There is a picture of a Slim Jim ad in this thread.

Aww ps4 has ads now too? Not only is the online paid but it has ads. I was planning on getting a ps4 sometime later but I guess I'll just stick to my pc.

Wasn't the problem with ads regarding having them invade the homescreen, rather than having them in the store? I can tell you firsthand that there are very few non-content ads on the PS4 store (though, don't get me wrong; I think it's really stupid that there are non-content ads at all in the store).

The Wii U store is functional. You can only navigate via the Gamepad, but it shows the menu on both the gamepad and your TV. There's a fair amount of ads in it. Also you have to add money to your balance in either $10, $20, $50, or $100 chunks and you can't add an amount that would exceed $200.

Here's what the storefront for it currently looks like:

It too has a McDonalds ad. ><

No. Ads on the home screen are infinitely worse than ads in the store.

Even if they're all relevant content (games) or announcements for upcoming OS updates/features? I suppose I can see how you wouldn't want any ads, but I don't see how the announcements are really bad. And there probably isn't a better place in the current UI for them.

I have no idea what he's talking about. I scrolled down about two weeks on my What's New section, and found about four ads total (and none of them non-content).

Yeah, I'd rather have them in the store (at least where you move the screen right from the home section and before you go into the section you want), but it's still not bad at all.

Yes, even if they're relevant. I don't want to see them in the home screen; that's for stuff I own.

Ads in a store don't bother me at all, unless they're pop-ups that hinder my ability to buy the shit I want.

Are those ads at all affected by your own app usage? I play a lot of JRPGs on my Vita, and I feel like I get a lot of JRPG ads. But it could be that those are just the ones I notice...

Strap on your hooker ...
I've never accidentally passed over a tile while navigating the UI of a PS system and had a loud-ass looping commercial start blaring at me midway through.

Until that point, MS is always the loser in any comparison.

No.

Ads don't even show up on PS4 during normal gaming experience. In the store they are categorized correctly (no movie ads in "games" tab), have an appealing layout, and a very user friendly UI.

I see a friend play Max CoB on X1 and there are fucking ads right there when the game starts up. Before he can access the menu he has to close the giant ads app that pops up.

God!! Thats just not true! Not at all!! Wtf...?!!

God!! Thats just not true! At all!! Wtf!!

It's bullshit. There is no "adds app" that pops up. What he might be referring to could be the "Y screen" that you can pull up (Microsoft download titles have those, like KI and MAX) it basically shows news/community updates related to the game you are playing or Xbox in general.

I have never seen an "add app" pop up playing Max.

I've transitioned from primarily using a 360 last generation to primarily using a PS4 this generation and I'm really surprised that Sony not only stuck with the exactly same store layout from the last few years of the PS3, they put in even MORE ads than I remember ever seeing last generation. Here are the annoying things that they didn't fix:

1. Even though I have Plus, I have to constantly navigate around ads to get to the Plus content.

2. Non-gaming ads are all over the gaming section, particularly on the big tiles that dominate each section.

3. New releases and coming soon are confusingly mixed in the "New" section.

4. Games with a ton of add-ons still dominate the "new release" sections, making it too hard to find what you really care about (I seem to remember this being handled better previously on the PS3 before the last big overhaul).

5. It's hard to find information about a lot of the smaller games. They could take a page from Microsoft with the user videos for every game.

In contrast, the XB1 store has been improved in a few key ways. Outside of the Kinect stuff, which can really streamline searches and codes, content is grouped much more efficiently than the PS4 store, the new stuff just seems to be a lot easier to find than on the PS4 store, and the Gold-specific offers are handled better. Plus, I will always love how it's incorporated into the UI instead of being a separate app that you jump into like it still is on the PS4. It's just too bad that I have so few reasons to use the XB1 store since I'm buying and playing 90% of my games on PS4 so far this generation.

It's really confusing to me why some people (who sound like they've never used an Xbox product) are saying they'd rather have ads in the store than in the dashboard. The XB1 Store IS part of the dashboard, so the ads you are seeing on the main screen is just the store new (or promotional) releases bleeding into the interface Metro-style. I don't believe I've ever seen an ad on the main screen that wasn't for video content, gaming content, or apps. And as has been repeated many times, once in the store I think there's only one small ad.
