Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

I do wonder if some in the Giantbomb community feels it has had social issues pushed down its throat, justifiably or not, so they're gonna backlash when it rears its head in content especially one like the bombcast which for about 6 years has been almost free of that kind of stuff. I see some in this thread and in the locked podcast thread saying that it's because Samantha is a women that the backlash is happening but I do wonder if this reaction would have been the same if someone like Dave's sister or Carrie was on instead. Regardless hats off to Rorie, dude takes his job seriously. I remember when he was commenting in almost all the Screened threads.

I guess it depends how old you are, but I figure teetotaler is a word you pick up in history class if you are American and learn about prohibition.

I guess history classes are taken way more serious in the US, most everybody at my high school (Canada) had veeeeeery little interest in anything being said. Then again, I could say that about most subjects, I guess.

Did they even talk about social issues? Maybe I blacked out but it just seemed like they said "we went to GaymerX and it was cool." And there's no way this was the first time, that seems bananas. I distinctly remember that in the same segment Ryan had shared his sitting on cake story he asked Carrie and another girl what they felt about their situation as woman in the game industry (because something had happened earlier that month or something). Only he could fit those two things together but still, don't understand what changed that people get upset whenever social issues get vaguely mentioned now.

Samantha seems cool. Glad they got somebody on who was at GaymerX. People complaining suck!
I kind of wish they brought Jason on to talk about Evo though. lol

I don't know about Dave's sister, but the last time Carrie was on during one of the GDC panels, she didn't seem at all interested in talking about the issue.

And it's not like Samantha really said anything controversial, other than saying that a man who identifies as male and likes to have sex with women enjoyed his time at this convention. She just used "big words" to describe that person.

Oh boy, I'm backing off, hopefully this thread will quarantine all this off-topic crap from Gaming, good day to you.
It's not off-topic when the convention in question is about and by the industry covering the medium, and being covered by the website for whom this thread is dedicated. No part of that is off-topic. But if you feel so strongly about this, then PM a mod. Passive-aggressively pointing it out in the podcast thread or whining about it here is useless. And calling it crap does little to engender any support I'm sure.

I very much doubt a mod will agree with you, considering one of the people you were complaining about was a mod, but you can always go for it.

"There was a games convention about social issues." Yep, this is getting pretty crazy.

You should probably look at how queer people are treated at events like PAX. There's a reason why there's a demand for something like GaymerX and why plenty of people don't want to support events like PAX while still seeing cool games and panels.

Yeah, it's not "OMG WOMAN" it's "OMG SJW". Having someone who labels themself "Ferocious queer" on twitter, to come in and talk about GaymerX, right after the hiring controversy is what prompted the reaction.

It's an old word and even then, no one really uses it since people just say "straight edge" now.

I have no idea where you would learn "agrarian" though... I just know what it means, presumably from something I read ages ago.
(The only word I explicitly remember learning on my own is hegemony. And that's because I had no idea how you pronounced it. lol)

In regards to their Evo "coverage," I just wanted them to get excited about it to encourage them to cover it in and other fighting game events in the future.

I mean, didn't Brad's obsession with DOTA start out as an experiment to understand it? I kinda want the same with competitive fighting games. I feel the same about speedrunning.

It seems like Jeff is the only person who is remotely interested in Evo in a genuine way, but he never has the time or the inclination to go.

Dan is a Waluigi fan? i'm not sure anymore

Jeff has corrupted you people.

If that's the case with the GB community, then they're really leaning into that boys club mentality that people have an issue with. But the GB community seems to have a strong reaction to anything that isn't the same comfortable thing without interruption.

I have no problem with the word/etymology of cisgender, but I have only ever heard it mentioned in a negative context.

Until last month I thought it was a derogatory word.

I think that's part of the "campaign against SJW", where people cherry pick the most hyperbolic and violent people on the internet and use them to represent everyone who thinks about these issues.

Certainly whenever I use cis and heteronormative, I use it simply to convey information that in certain contexts may be relevant.

I think on his first Bombcast Dan called this new job a life-changing event. It seemed like a rather inconspicuous thing to say. Obviously switching jobs and moving is a big deal. Maybe there was a little more to it. Maybe he wanted to get out and away from his past life, be exposed to how little he knows. So it could be pretty mean-spirited to derisively point out all the little knowledge gaps.

I think the big problem is that Giant Bomb has sort of attracted a lot of attention regarding these issues and now every time there is something vaguely related to anything that could be considered "SJW" you see 500+ post threads pop up on 4chan and Reddit who get all into a tizzy and go shit up the comment threads. It's not like only certain people can sign up for accounts there.

I'm more and more convinced that it's an act anyway.

Agrarian comes up a lot if you know anything about Colonial America through the presidency of Andrew Jackson, it's especially important when discussing Thomas Jefferson. However, i'm not surprised that many didn't pay attention, or just don't care, to that part of history. It's not exciting.

Maybe they should take a page out of Neogaf's book, it seems they need to make a drastic change there anyway to salvage the forums. Though that would go against Jeff's inclusive message post, I honestly have no clue what they should do there.

A basic history, economics, or anthropology class?

We don't cover much American history in school here (Germany), but if that period is about agrarian reform, -- I can't think of many history-shaping events in the 18th and 19th century that didn't have agrarian concerns as their basis! I'm actually interested now.

Gummi Bears was a Disney show that was part of their animation block way back when. It's weird that you could watch Rescue Rangers without knowing about Gummi Bears, come to think of it.

Dan's food admission is throwing me for a loop but i totally respect his reasoning of being a cheap bastard and sticking with the same stuff for safety. At least he has been trying other stuff.

Chicken feet is good and works well in soup/broth.

Chicken Feet is great
The secret, as Anthony Bourdain keeps insisting on his show, is that the awful and non-traditional parts of animals are usually prepared the best, because poor people had to try to find a way to feed themselves with tripe and feet and blood and so on.

So the Giant Bomb community went nuts because a trans-person is on this week's bombcast ?

Some of you who were puzzled by my comment the other day of me leaving that community must probably understand now. Man. I hope Rorie perm'd some asses.

Teetotaler is the word my English teacher taught us for a person who's.. uh.. a teetotaler. In fact I don't think I know any other word for that. Of course we were always taught British English, so the word could be more common there.

Teetotaler is quite a common word in the US.

When I watched Rescue Rangers, it was along with Talespin and Ducktales. I've never seen Gummibears before.
