Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

I had a thought.

What if Mewtwo did not return, but his moveset did to some extent. Like it get's reworked into Giygas' moveset? They look similar, and I think Mewtwo's design was influenced by it. (So I've read). His Final Smash could be like how he looks in Earthbound / Mother 2.

Either way, would that be an okay move? Not another Pokemon, but a new Earthbound / Mother character?

Note* I have not played any Earthbound games.

Giygas would be perfect, his final smash would be horrifying and amazing, and we would get another villain and a rep from Mother 1 (with Lucas and Ness it's the only game in the trilogy that isn't represented, and the main protagonist, Ninten, looks just like Ness without a backpack)

Krystal is the most plausible pick for a SF newcomer, & one who wouldn't necessarily be a clone due to her staff. She was 1 of the more commonly name dropped characters in general since pre-Brawl. A coming Star Fox sequel/reboot gives reason to put more focus on the franchise in SSB.

Advance Wars is the sister series of FE yet has so far has zero reps vs. FE's 4 (5 counting Roy). There's really only about 3-4 characters from AW that make any sense to use:
A. Andy-Closest there is to main protagonist, can uses wrenches as weapons
B. Max-Big powerhouse with hard hitting punches.
C. Sami-Infantry specialist whose always depicted with a weapon in hand.
D. The player's soldier from Battalion Wars
E. Implements Dual Strike's tag team feature for 2 of the above

No one gives a damn about Battalion Wars here (is it at all popular in Japan?) so might as well scratch D. Character transformations are out so E ain't happening either. While Andy might technically be the main hero of AW, we've seen with Chrom & Lucina that alone doesn't guarantee a spot. Sami's infantry specialization & fondness of weaponry gives the impression of her being more believable as a direct combatant than any other CO in the series. Then there's the occasional "Snake replacement" argument where some say Sami can take over Snake's moveset if he doesn't return, which seems certain at this point.

I tend to see the bolded a lot and I'm always very curious to find out if the person saying as much knows the difference between a transformation character and a paired up character.

Plus anything that would inspire more Sami Rule 34 is a good thing in my book

& just to clarify, there's also a number of male humans from Poke'mon I'm ok with joining as well (like Red & Surge) but they weren't relevant to the question.

IF there was to be another Star Fox character, I think Krystal has a strong shot. I'm just not sure why you're convinced Star Fox will get another character. It's true a new Star Fox is coming next year but the franchise already has three characters on the roster. Given the # of games in the series, their sales and the mindshare of the franchise, that seems well represented no?

As for Sami, I think you've made your agenda abundantly clear :P The series has much less representation than FE but that's because it has sold worse and has much smaller mindshare. We haven't heard ANYTHING about the franchise since Days of Ruin while Fire Emblem just came off its MOST successful entry. FE's increased presence in Smash makes perfect sense. While its nice to hope for a Advance Wars newcomer, there's no reason to expect one.

If I had to make a guess, I'd say the next most likely female character that could get into Smash would be Dixie Kong since the DK franchise is more under-represented relative to its sales and mindshare and she almost made it into Brawl.

This of course assumes Sakurai and team even care how well represented a franchise is in Smash relative to its sales numbers and/or mindshare

So how do "Final Smashes" affect balance/gameplay? Also, what are the modes in a Smash game?

I know there's the stock mode, but what else is there? Are there other ways to win outside of Ring out?

I doubt it. Even as an assist trophy, her moves are completely different. Though I wouldn't mind if she was added as the kind of pseudo-clone people decry Wolf for in SSB5.
Shrapnel beam is so cool.
What if dark samus was in the game, but she was an exact clone of samus (but her moves were only visually different - phazon missiles, bombs, etc), like lucina is to marth. Only difference is her moves have less knockback but do more percent.
Dark Samus literally cannot use the Screw Attack; it wasn't included in Samus' Phazon Suit. She also does not use the bombs or grapple beam at any point in her fights.

Anyone suggesting Dark Samus as a close clone needs to go play Metroid Prime 2 again.

Maybe gamefreak decided to make Greninja a better pokemon when they knew he was going to be in smash so they could push the character to appeal to more fanbases.

Yeah no, other wise Charizard would have gotten the same treatment years ago.

Game Freak made Greninja a good Pokémon because they designed him like a Ninja Pokémon and it happened to work out well for him.

I'm curious, what did people think of the initial X/Y starters when they were first revealed?

The only X/Y starter I was fond of was Greninja.

Same, I like Chesnaught but eh he kept reminding me of Torterra when I used him. Delphox however I have no care for since I use Charizard anyway.

Dark Samus > Lucina any day of the week, month, year, century, millenium, you name it.

We have two Samus in the game, we don't need another one.

Beside I am sure Ridley will be a playable character, judging by that Metroid trophy we saw waaay back in the Nintendo direct.

You guys getting any grip attachments for your 3ds?

Ew no, I don't buy any grip attachments for my handhelds, I go in raw.

I know, silly. I know darn well she's not a direct samus clone. I was just playing devil's advocate/teasing. Mainly referring to the Dark Samus > Lucina post, so I was trying to do Dark samus = Lucina.

I'm curious... in the very same direct we got a very strong hint that Ridley is going to be a boss character in the Phyrosphere, yet I still see plenty of people confident on Ridley being playable... do you think Sakurai was trolling us there or somehow Ridley will be both playable and a boss?

Aside from the unhealthy hope all Ridley supporters foster, the general thought seems to be that he's teasing Ridley far too much and too often for him to not be playable. It's uncertain just how much of this is hopeful interpretation, but I do think coyly hinting at Ridley if he's just a boss is odd after he was two bosses in Brawl.

I always pictured Dark Samus floating above the ground as she moves back and forth, ala Bison (and her own game appearances) in Alpha.

And of course, Mewtwo does this too (in Melee).

So how do "Final Smashes" affect balance/gameplay? Also, what are the modes in a Smash game?

I know there's the stock mode, but what else is there? Are there other ways to win outside of Ring out?

Final smashes are an item that appears on stage and floats around, as far as I'm aware they take a random number of hits to break and whoever lands the final hits gets an aura.

If they hold the move for neutral special then they'll use their final smash but if they get hid a random amount of times whilst they have the aura, they'll lose the orb and it will start flying around again.

The balance of final smashes are completely out of wack, ranging from terrible on already terrible characters (Ness & PK Starstorm), to overpowered on already good characters (Falco & Landmaster), which is why they're not really used that often in competitive play.

There's a stock mode where you have lives, a time mode where you have score, a coin mode where you earn coins for doing damage and KOs and the one with the most wins.

There's also a custom mode style thing where you can make everything slow mo or fast, make everyone invisible, give everyone stamina (HP) etc.

You can also do 2v2 games (with and without friendly fire) in all the modes (as well as 3v1 if you're feeling cocky).

Missed the POTD last night, but love the new info on Robin! I'm really digging Smash 4's focus of bringing gameplay features from the source material of newcomers to inform the moveset and play style.

I dunno about that, I know on here these characters are being clamored for, but the reality is that at the moment Fire Emblem is bigger than all of those franchises, and has more entries and been with Nintendo longer than all of them.

I'm all for those characters getting included, but even though it might not be what some want, FE getting 4 reps doesn't necessarily mean anything for the other characters

I'm late but Donkey Kong has been around longer than Fire Emblem and the two characters most wished for have been around much longer than Lucina or Robin. Not to mention Donkey Kong Country outsold even Zelda last gen and only came behind Mario, Pokemon and like Wii Fit I think. DK is higher on the "tier" list.

Yes this was Fire Emblem's biggest success, but their big success is like Donkey Kong's low point.

I think it's more likely that Sakurai is trolling us like this because he knows the fanbase wants Ridley than him trolling us with the boss character hint. I, for one, think Ridley is better represented as a boss than as a playable character, but would still be happy if it were otherwise. I know I'm in the minority but if we get a new Metroid rep I'd like to see Adam. While Other M's story is nothing to write home about, I do like his character both from Fusion and Other M. Sakurai could get creative too, given the futuristic weaponry (or just make him inherit Snake's moveset)

If Ridley was somehow implemented as a playable character, I think that would be the greatest achievement in Smash Bros history. His proportions do NOT lend him to be easily made into a character with a proper moveset.

With that in mind (again) I've come to the conclusion not to expect him playable, but if he is I will be extremely impressed.

I've gone to the side of not wanting Ridley to be playable now simply because the one he showed on the pyrosphere stage was the clone ridley from Other M.

I want to play as a bad ass space dragon not... that

It's difficult to discern anything objectively when it comes to Ridley through the haze of translation and fan interpretation, but for me at least, the attitude taken towards Ridley hints is completely different to every other disconfirmation thus far. The fact there's hinting in the first place is different enough.

Also, Adam would be a suicidal choice. He's probably the most hated character in the entirety of Metroid - though I guess Anthony would be a good choice for that sort of moveset. Perhaps if he's in the hypothetical Fusion sequel we'll never get...

The sad part is, if he was playable and somehow had a good design as an alt, the amiibo would still probably be shitty Other M Ridley.

When I think of RIdley's proportions I just think of a hunched posture like Bowser, long arms on the ground like Donkey Kong, a long tail that doesn't even have to be any longer than Charizard's(official brawl Ridley has a much smaller tail than say Metroid Prime's and all it needs to do is just stretch when being used like every other limb in the game), wings like Charizard(exact same size, these wings would still be bigger than the Ridley wings depicted on 2D Ridley) and as for his neck, well just keep it folded and close to his body like he always keeps it unless he is using a biting attack.

Give his wings and tail the same hurt box properties that Charizard's has and you are good to go.

I don't know how Ridley is going to be presented in the game but I know a mere boss is out of the question at this point. I'm expecting him as a boss and something else to go with that...

What happened? The trophy is clearly different from the one posted by Sakurai monday.

To be fair, though, SSB4's version of the Other M Varia and Zero Suits were infinitely superior to their original versions. Even with the heels. I don't think the game would ship with anything like that hideous abomination - I'd expect some of clone Ridley's scale textures and colour palette to be incorporated into Brawl Ridley at the most.

any videos/gifs of this? i never caught it

No, that's my point. Sakurai implied in the PotD that air smashes exist, but if that's true it would be weird if they're just for Robin.

As far as Lucas goes, I think Lucina's existence is good news on his front. A heavy clone like that is something you decide on later in development when you realize you have a bit of extra time, but not enough to create an entirely new character. I mean, unless we end up with 5 or 6 new clones; they probably would have prioritized Lucas over getting even two clones (Lucina and Dark Pit) in.

The suit is still mostly similar to the way it looks in Other M though, it just doesn't look like it's made out of plastic like in the actual game (I still hate the peashooter though).

There's no way they can fix this abomination:
RjlpDMJ.png

Just by changing a few textures.

And the Ridley in Sm4sh has the tail from Other M Ridley, I can't see him creating a hybrid ridley.

E: Fuck, I just got a good look at that image again. Fuck you sakamoto.

He could've at least linked the "Awesome" Fan Art thread

An item?

Actually I'm guessing a boss and either playable in some playable boss mode or playable all together as a regular fighter.

My hope however is that all the teasing isn't to build up the playable boss mode. It's something many of us thought about a long long long time ago and it would just be my worst Ridley nightmare. Not like that Sakurai...

Huh. I doubt it's a separate trophy to the one that Sakurai posted. Maybe the trophies move around a bit? Like blinking or breathing?

I dunno - this is an enigma that I'm very excited to discover more about.

I'm on mobile so can you link me to Monday POTD? So I can see difference between two pictures please?
I edited it in.

Looking back, it might be an angle thing... the hair covers some of the eye. But it looks really different. Hard to say.

Either way, it's really strange to me even if it is just a different angle. Why are they releasing their own screenshot of Smash Bros., rather than using the screenshot that Nintendo put out there?
