Friend and I got our claws on a day back. Was really enjoyable. There's a severe lack of great coop games you can play to start to finish and it's great to see Bungie continue this with Destiny.

It's a good shooter with all of the best parts of an mmo cherry picked to make a delicious co-op pie. The world is also pretty immersive and the story, while only stylish so far, is still so much better presented than most other things.

4/10.

Jokes, totally in. Will most likely be GOTY too (knowing how journos usually go).

Crucible will have a mode where it's just plain old-fashioned killing without zone stuff, right? Teams of FFA, both are good.

I don't play MMOs so someone needs to explain this game's mechanics to me like I'm a five-year-old.

1. I take it that items with a green background are better than my starting items (white background)? If so, how come I have some white weapons that are more powerful than green weapons?

2. Once I get a better weapon, is there any point in keeping my old weapon in my inventory, or should I just dismantle it?

3. Why are only some sets of armor upgradable?

4. When on a quest with friends, are all the drops I see collectable by only me? Can a drop be stolen by my teammates?

5. I earned a family emblem or something. Where do I go to see this?

6. What am I supposed to do with items in my inventory?

7. Do public events only happen in the Explore zones?

8. How do I earn glimmer? Just by killing dudes?

Like I said, I'm completely new to this.

If you hold B and C there is pretty much nothing the other team can do about it.

What's funny is that when we got team alpha, the whole team would just run past A - not even bothering to cap it - just to take B and C first.

I'm not really sure how they could fix it for control without altering the geometry of the map.

Color refers to the commonality of the weapon you've selected. Theoretically, what's rare is better relative to stuff of a similar level requirement.

2. Once I get a better weapon, is there any point in keeping my old weapon in my inventory, or should I just dismantle it?

Dismantle for cash. Only keep the good ones (3 at most).

3. Why are only some sets of armor upgradable?

Because some armors are better than others.

4. When on a quest with friends, are all the drops I see collectable by only me? Can a drop be stolen by my teammates?

Yes to the first question, no to the second. The kill owner gets the collectable.

5. I earned a family emblem or something. Where do I go to see this?

I'm not sure what you're referencing, but you can select your emblem in the character menu.

6. What am I supposed to do with items in my inventory?

Use them (some don't work in the beta) or sell them. i.e., Spinmetal can be traded to the crucible guy on the left in the chamber leading to the class armor shops.

7. Do public events only happen in the Explore zones?

No.

8. How do I earn glimmer? Just by killing dudes?

Yes, and some quests will help as well.

I think the biggest problem that people are experiencing (yet overlooking) in pvp is lag. What may look like bad weapon balance is often times just due lag. It's been the case with every game that suffers rubberbanding/lag that low fire rate weapons suffer significantly more than high fire rate weapons.

You need three upper body shots with a scout to kill. If lag causes you to miss one shot you are at a more severe disadvantage than if you were unloading 500rpm into someone with an auto rifle. I have found that sometimes I open on an unaware opponent with a scout rifle headshot, take them down to 40 percent immediately, and still lose to their autorifle due to the delay to the followup shots. It's even more difficult against those who strafe. You will notice similar results with pulse rifles. The lower the fire rate the worse it will feel. I have found that higher fire rate/lower damage pulse rifles are more reliable in pvp.

As far as my thoughts on actual balance:
I feel like between scout and auto it is close to where it should be. Auto rifles have an advantage in close quarters and to stand a chance with a scout rifle requires headshots. In the long range scout is better but not by a lot. Auto rifle is almost just as accurate at the long range and needs a tiny bit nerf in range or damage drop off especially since most maps are close/mid range.

Pulse rifles vary greatly depending on their fire rate. I feel like they are lagging a little behind and should receive a buff to fire rate. This should make them a bit less reliable than a single shot in the very long range and a bit more reliable in the mid/long range, placing them in the space between auto/scout.

Handcannons are terrible and needs a complete rebalance. It is not good enough to have a weapon that doesn't excel at anything. As it stands it is weaker than a scout rifle, which already is outclassed by the auto in most situations. You can make it more difficult to use by lowering fire rate/adding a significant amount of recoil, and make it kill in two shots to make it competitive. Or you can go the other way and let it kill in 3-4 shots, but make it fire as fast as you can pull the trigger, the weakness being range/recoil. It needs a space/situation/playstyle that it is great at for it to remain competitive.

Shotguns: It is fine that they can kill at point blank range and I feel that it's fair because the fire rate tends to be low on these. You have tools to stay out of it's effective range if you know someone is wielding it. I find that I am inconsistent with it so I generally try to avoid using it as it is difficult to use if you are not absolutely point blank range.

Fusion rifle: This gun can vary from absolutely useless to pretty damn good depending on the stats. Ones that charge a long time are fairly difficult to use, yet those that charge up quickly are like a shotgun with a little more range. I think those are pretty underused and I'm glad that finding a good one takes a bit of luck.

Snipers: Classic Halo balance. Two body shots or one headshot. I can't complain too much since they at least removed the reticle outside of ADS making it a little bit harder to quickscope with.

Heavy weapons: All are strong for PVP and PVE as they should be.

Overall guns: If you look at the guns you will see that every weapon can be at a severe disadvantage depending on range except for the auto rifle. It works well at any range and can often beat close and long range weapons at their respective ranges.

Lag is a HUGE factor right now. Also I agree handcannon needs some balancing, although I've managed to make it work. I use my uncommon one exclusively and get a decent kd. Although autorifle is easier to use.

Anyone have a clue what Outlaw does? I suppose I could just test it on and off, but I seldom use heavy weapons as is.

I rarely play domination gametypes because it just seems capture points are not put in spots that are perfectly even to both teams. It's not fault of the gametype but of the maps they are put on. You need maps dedicated to that type of match. I will be avoiding this when full game releases as much as I can.

Do we know the other gametypes yet? CTF, FFA, Deathmatch etc

There's Rumble, which is FFA. Skirmish, which is Team Deatmatch. Combined Arms, I'm not sure what really is, but reading from it's description it's kind of like BTB.

About Salvage, It looks like to be about securing relics and defending them if I read the description right.

Like I said, I'm completing new to this.

1. Items green and above have skill trees. The more you use the weapon and level it up, youll unlock different things to change some attributes, like scope size and stability. Press triangle to see its skill tree

2. Compare your weapons with R2 before you dismantle them. i deleted a common sniper that was way better for PvP than my green one despite being weaker. You dont have to keep them if you dont want to but dont end up regretting it.

3. see above. cant upgrade white gear and there are subtle differences in what they give you. R2 compares what you're selecting with what you have equipped.

4. loot is private, so it cant be stolen. what you see is yours. other people may also not see orbs of light or ammo on the ground like you do (but that one may be a bug)

5. press the gray arrow at the bottom in your options menu. emblems are on the lower right.

6. you can buy ammo replenish packs at the gunsmith and access them from here, or use ether seeds to increase glimmer from Fallen, or turn in spin metal at the robot opposite Shaax to upgrade armor and other things.

7. public events only happen in public spaces (the wise open ones). they can happen even if you are on a story mission. go to The Divide if you want the Devil Walker event.

8. Use ether seeds or complete missions in Explore (especially the ones with a star jn a diamond symbol). I think you get some from story modes too.

Yeah it will. I imagine it will have a pretty flushed playlist if Bungie's past efforts are anything to go by. Probably will have a game type without radar as well.

I really have come to believe that most randoms have never played a game with control points. They just run around instead of hold 2 points and getting a win

Most frustrating thing is that some randoms prefer to kill rather than kill and holding the captured zones.

Putting kills as a point factor in Control was a bad idea, IMO.

I dunno if I would have noticed without hearing the complaints, but the game is unpleasant if people are in those derpy looking tank things. That is also not some game play I'm interested in really getting familiar with as I tend to enjoy being a foot soldier.

1. The green items are more rare than the white common ones and typically have other bonuses besides just their base stats. Loot stats are probably random and that's why some of your white's arer still better. Also when you disdmantle green uncommon items you will get different materials than when you dismantle white ones.

2. Based on some of the descriptions I've seen.. In the main game your gear will have durability ratings and if you wear them down too much they will be destroyed or useless or something. Not sure yet. But yea it's nice to have backup weapons just in case that happens. But for the most part you'll be dismantling your old weapons.

3. Common white items aren't upgradeable. The uncommon+ items are and have their own skill trees.

4. bungie said all the drops are for you only. Everyone gets their own loot.

6. I dont know everything available to us yet. But mostly everything is going to be used for some sort of crafting, upgrading, etc.

No answer for the others.

Forgive the stupid question that's probably been answered tons of times, but how do I get random people to join my fire team when I'm not doing a strike mission?

Now that I have a Cydonia PVP feels better. Really, all the weapons I had were just no good for this mode. The sole shotgun I got does the job but it's too slow on reload and rate of fire.

If you kill someone with a headshot you get super fast reload, I think.

Oh man. Team SWAT was the shit when I played it in Halo 3 MP.

I'd love to have a SWAT mode (FFA or Team-centric) in the Crucible. ;)

Maybe the hand cannon will finally be usefu....oh right scout rifle.

Haha right?

After all the progress Bungie has made towards custom gametypes in their past few games, I was really hoping for something like that for Destiny.

How cool would it be to have a Handcannon only game? Or a Super only game where your Supers are always charged up? Or golden gun only? Man. C'mon Bungie.

If you're in the tower or in Explore mode, click R3 while aiming a player, select options to interact (Or select if you're on PS3), and then click invite to fireteam.

Aim at them and hold the player highlight button, on PS# it's circle. Then press start, and a menu should come up that allows you to look at them or invite them.

Unless they add something to this Beta, I think I'm completely done until launch.

I have:
- a Titan with 160 Defense
- all 5 gold chests and the gold Sparrow reward
- all the Iron Banner items I can get as a Rank 1
- all fully upgraded green gear with armor bonuses that suit my weapon choices
- completed all story on all difficulties
- completed Devil's Lair on level 8 10+ times in an attempt to get the Shingen-C AR
- about 50 Crucible Marks
- 570 Grimoire score (I know I could do more but ugh, grinding)
- all the ships and emblems I thought were cool enough to buy

The only thing I want but don't have is that Legendary ship from Iron Banner. Aside from that, the only thing that could get me to play again is the Moon part of the game. I'm addicted. The launch is too far away.
