Difficult to disagree on any major points here. Completely pointless console, sold through lies and trickery. Hope it dies a quick death.
And that argument is relevant how? I was giving the 3DS as an example. Counter-arguing against my example doesn't make my point less meaningful, it just derails the discussion.
This always online, always kinect powered all-in-one media hub was stripped down after backpedaling and cloying to become that thing you play Titanfall on.
Great summary. The problem is, aside from people who didn't actually watch the video, some people either don't mind being treated like shit or are incapable of perceiving when they're being treated like shit, as long as it's by people behind a brand that they're fond of.
I'm definitely not praising such an attempt. I'm just glad none of it ever happened and now I have a better console with a lot of great gaming to look forward to. Cheers!
Which I don't disagree with you with. What I disagree with is the idea that MS has done anything worth apologizing for. They announced a service, people didn't like it. They changed it. No one has lost a dime becuase of Xbox DRM.
So what is their to apologize for. Comments Penello made on an internet forum? Working on the kinect? Not putting in the same kind of RAM Sony has?
Early adopters get burned. They took the risk, same as PS4 owners(such as myself) did.
I already had what I wanted, an X1 with Kinect. I still have the fantastic voice commands, the automatic sign in, the ir control etc.I'm sure the 3million+ fans who bought the Kinect SKU were very happy that Microsoft "gave them what they want" by removing Kinect and $100 from the price.
When was the last time early adopters of a console were burned within the first 9 months of ownership from launch?
So what would you have them do, exactly?
But it was GOING to happen. It was part of their 'philosophy.' It was an anti-consumer policy. Do you think this is okay that this was even considered an acceptable hardware decision?
Well more so sold through focus on features nobody actually wanted.
Microsoft made a boat and talked about how boat was the future and sailing was awesome.
The market was like "nah this cheaper, faster, better looking car is what we want"
Now it's like microsoft trying to sell a boat as a car.
Yeah, it's a bit too early to declare the console a failure.
Edit: From the responses in this thread I'm assuming it is serious. Well, what a truly shit video.
But Sony also received praise at e3 2013 for doing everything 'normal'
It's kind of important to give feedback.
You're right no one did but that was the future microsoft advertised and sold the Xbox one as. A system that would use kinect to enhance the xbox experience! That was their vision for the foreseeable future and then 7 months in and well "our visions changed now. Now its about the games!". So how you don't think people got screwed because they should of had some foresight that only 7 months into the consoles life span microsoft would change their stance on the kinect and sell the console without the "mandatory" Kinect is ridiculous.
I don't disagree with Jim at all here, despite my dislike towards his general smug attitude (I guess that's what his fans want?).
Here's to hoping Xbox learns a thing or two from this generation and goes back to the attitude they had throughout the OG and early 360 days.
Those were fun times.

Xbone isn't a failure if you bought into the original vision?Yeah, it's a bit too early to declare the console a failure.
Yet we continue to see the daily worship of Kaz, Cerny, Boyes and Yoshida. Yes, the "this fo the gamahs!" line is not marketing at all and they care so much. Come on, that fanboy shit works both ways, man.
To be honest, Sony did not have to do much at all. Microsoft kicked their own ass and all Sony did was smartly seize on that opportunity. Microsoft's clown shoes mistakes made Sony look so good that nobody even blinked when they revealed that they will also be charging for online.
At the end of the day, none of these corporations are out to be your friend and they all try to pull dirty stunts at some time or another. Some obviously worse than others, but the fact remains the same. All we can do is get loud and protest when they try and pull such stunts and hopefully we will end up with something more appealing after the dust settles. I am just thankful that we were actually able to do that with the Xbox One and I plan to enjoy mine as a result.
For me to buy the system or for good will?
For good will i'd like MS to admit they didn't listen to the market for the year leading up to their first X1 press conference instead of telling us how the market wasn't ready for what they were selling. I don't really need an apology even, but at least acknowledgement that they didn't even care until they got hit in the wallet.
There are two sides to the ledger, he said. There is a lot of learning that I did as a leader in the organisation, when I just heard how our message resonated with people and some of the decisions that we made, that I think were actually the wrong decisions, and we had to revisit those decisions.
I'm not sure how I feel about this video. Jim usually makes good, valid points, but it seems like he's arguing that, unless Microsoft comes out and outright apologizes for everything, that we should not be happy that things have changed for the better with regards to the Xbox One.
The 3DS. The WiiU. Hell I'm still waiting on basic PS3 features like using a USB and Mp3 playback on my PS4.When was the last time early adopters of a console were burned within the first 9 months of ownership from launch? 3DS is the most recent one that comes to mind and they got ambassador games at least.
Like bees to honey.
Pretty sure the smug attitude is a part of his "Jimquisition" persona. Kinda like Stephen Colbert as a parody of a conservative pundit.
Good lord, this. The single thing that most enables shitty studio and corporate practices right now is this culture of pre-release and preemptive hype. There's very little to disagree with here, in terms of the events, but this is why making gaming purchases based products and services already in existence would save people from a lot of frustration and disappointment. Simply waiting until a platform has the features and games actually in place that let you justify your purchase is like a magical null-ray to protect you from overreaching marketing promises and rubbish.
Here's the thing: Approaching the hobby this way means your purchases don't have to be based on trust. Good software and platform support will be immediately rewarded. Half-baked, over (or under) ambitious products will only be rewarded when they've improved. Sadly, this is a novel idea in a business currently rooted in pre-ordering and pre-purchasing.

But Phil is innocent! The lying MS was the work of the evil Don Matrick!
Hardly considering most of what was said was pretty much bullshit. The truth hurts.

Why is he willing to do it and then other execs come up right behind him to do interviews explaining how we weren't ready for the future.
I don't get it, is the next system update going to brick everybody's kinect? Voice commands still work, navigation still works, all of the stuff that was advertised still works for anybody that wants to use it.
Yup! And how they simply just didn't explain it clearly. Why is he willing to do it and then other execs come up right behind him to do interviews explaining how we weren't ready for the future.
Wow... wow...
... wow.
As for the video, I literally couldn't tell if it was satire or not. Could someone more familiar with the show/guy tell me?
Edit: From the responses in this thread I'm assuming it is serious. Well, what a truly shit video.
The most frustrating thing about the early Xbox One was how many journalists were ready to lay down and fucking take it without protest. "This is the future, this is how it is, PS4 is likely DRM locked too." Thankfully consumers didn't suck it down and changes were made.
Should Xbox even bother with next year's E3??
Sony payed their price last gen as well thanks to their arrogance but they never tried to pull the BS that MS tried to pull with the XB1.
And as the above picture shows at least Kaz and the other higher ups had the decency to apologize to their consumers for the hacked PSN incident. MS not only never tried to apologize for their lies but they were blaming the actual consumers for not accepting the XB1 as it was originally meant to be.

Ironically, because Sony shot themselves in the foot with their boring as hell conference I actually thought MS's decent-ish conference was good by comparison.
Of course they both got trashed by Nintendo, I guess I didn't see that coming.
Everyone entering this thread should read this post.
Jim is not shitting on the console it's self, he's shitting on the business practices associated with the console.
bill gates ? hahhahhaha
